No. 387880

This is a thread for women who fit the UN definition of indigenous:

"Indigenous communities, peoples and nations are those which, having a historical continuity with pre-invasion and pre-colonial societies that developed on their territories, consider themselves distinct from other sectors of the societies now prevailing on those territories, or parts of them."

This includes Native Americans, Australian Aboriginals, Samoans, Maoris,Sámis, Chukchis and Palestinians among others.

How do ndn farmers from North America feel about the neverending disputes about Indigenous identity?
Is it racial, cultural, familial, legal, or ethnic to you? How do you feel about the 1/16th people reclaiming? What about mixed people who look more like their other race? Is enrolment the be-all-end-all?

Does this really come up further than calling out people who are doing some elaborate grift? Anyone claiming 1/16th ancestry wouldn't even be blinked at. If you look mixed no one is really going to think much if one of your parents are native. You can't claim any benefits or anything monetary unless you're status. You might get some extra shit if you look mixed but that doesn't really mean much in the grand scheme of things.

Blood quantum is a white supremacist invention. It’s irrelevant to most actual indigenous people.

It absolutely comes up pretty often. It is particularly contentious when reconnecting Natives with a distant ancestor take advantage of opportunities which they already have easier access to. Eg. Related to the arts, job opportunities, etc.
This is because what >>387926 said is true, but causes this problem where very white-looking and culturally disconnected people (who will automatically be favored by white people due to feeling more familiar) will take on Indigenous roles in organizations, the arts, etc. Meanwhile a half or full Indigenous person who was raised on rez is less likely to have access to these opportunities in the first place due to living conditions and generational trauma.

But then there are also people who reconnect, are open about being mostly white, and just want to learn the culture. And being aggressive about blood quantum turns them away which sucks. It's not black and white (or brown and white heh). My stance lays somewhere in the grey since I do have reconnecting friends I love.
Also some people just straight up lie and aren't Indigenous at all kek.

Samefag sorry if this came off aggro. Also my experiences may be colored by living urban in a place where self-identity is a big discussion and rarely questioned. Loads of local intra-community conflict about it.

I'm white Métis and while I didn't grow up disconnected from cultural stuff it wasn't a super strong presence either. I really love learning about Métis history/culture, but I'm also very stressed about coming off as a 1/16th larper so I tend to just keep it to myself. Everyone I've mentioned it to tends to pull an "Oh! …Really?" fake smile and I can't deal with the awkward tension.

How come woke people outside Australia always forget aboriginals exist?

I just finished watching Disney's Wish and even though they went out of their way to make the kingdom of Rosas ultra diverse there are zero characters with aboriginal traits. Same thing in their other woke movies.. no aboriginal mermaid in the black little mermaid, no aboriginal character in strange world..

Google's woke AI had the same problem. People bitched it wouldn't generate white people, but it generated even less aboriginals.

Is anyone else weirded out by the fact that there's a ton of white woman x North American native man romance novels but nearly nothing featuring other indigenous groups? Why do white women love North American natives so much

No. 391549

>>391538
I'll admit to having read a few of these, yes they're weird and I think it's just a fetish the same way there are women who exclusively date east asians/afro-latinos etc. There is a lot of romanticised imagery around long haired, well built native americans in touch with nature who are less 'repressed' than white men.

No. 391577

>>391538
there are lots of americans and we very specific kind of brainworms when it comes to race unfortunately

No. 392007

Indigenous erasure nona, it’s always indigenous erasure. Aboriginal people are often also very dark skinned, so colorism/anti-black sentiment could also play a role.
>>391538
Yes, race fetishism makes me uncomfortable

Why do only Americans have these brainworms though? Colonization happened all over the globe but there's no spicy Spaniard x native Phillipino romance novels.

Nonna Americans own Hollywood and are the wealthiest, most "popular" nation on earth. Of course you hear about their brainworms more often.

Mattel made the Wilma Mankiller Barbie a young, thin half African looking woman because they think a 40 years old overweight white-passing Native American isn't marketable or something. So much for body positivity.

it does use the fat doll model though

>So much for body positivity.
It's a company, they were never genuine about body positivity. They'll use body positivity if it makes them money and they won't if it doesn't.
