In the vein of the engagement ring thread - post your dress inspos!

And ofc if you prefer suits feel free to share as well! Just wanted to keep the title short.

Recs for dresses that work as a wedding dress but could be reworn (possibly after dying) on other occasions later. Not into buying a ridiculous princess dress that I'll wear one in my life.
My mom wore a purple hippie dress but that was the 70s.

My sister wore something similar to pic related to her wedding, except less beige/more green. The wedding was fairly small/intimate, so she managed to stand out beautifully despite not wearing traditional white.

If you want to go full white and make it more wearable later with dying, a good option might be a shorter (kneelength) wedding dress.

God I fantasize about my wedding dress all the time.

I want a short and sweet dress, that I'll be able to wear again after the wedding… But on the day of the wedding it will be accessorized grandiosely, with a long and sheer cape with shoulder clamps/pads, maybe golden or decorated with big white roses, or looking like they're made of golden feathers (in a fantasy-like style); a sheer fabric belt tied in a pretty bow, golden accents and lace layers. Also I dream of a tiara or a gorgeous flower crown to top it off.

I probably won't get married before at least 6 years, so I'm dead set on learning how to sew before then, so I can make it myself. I mean, I'll probably ask help from my mother and sister, but it would be probably less expensive than getting a seamstress considering how ambitious my ideas are. Anyone else thinking of working on their own?

Also what do you guys think about splurging on a really expansive dress? I have pretty expansive taste and all, but I tend to look at cheap dresses because in the end they can look just as great as some designer princess dress, maybe the vibe will be different or the details cheaper… But spending over $2000 on something you'll wear once seems like such a waste to me.

Pic related because cape

>>83676
That's awesome. Patterns on a wedding dress are not a common choice and it just makes it more special in a way.

I know how over the top it is, but if I ever get married I want to do a really crazy fantasy style wedding. Think "The Night Circus" as a theme. That one Peter Pan guy and his wife Dorothy had an amazing wedding for their budget, imho.

Hence why I like dresses like this. I want everyone to wear really fun, costume-y stuff to my wedding, as long as it's well made. I wouldn't trust this website to make my dress, especially because even in this image you can see it's cheaply made, but id hire a good tailor to make something similarly kooky/gaudy for me.

So cheesy but man I love this shit. I'd hire entertainers as well, like circus acts. Contortonists, fire breatherss etc. And a gourmet popcorn bar.

I know it's not original but it's what I like. Panic at the Disco probably influenced me too much, as a kid.

If I ever get married, I'd want to wear something pretty and comfortable and little more low key than most wedding dress I see around me. I love big extravagant or hyper girly dresses but I wouldn't feel like myself in them.
I would like my hair to be either low or barely up, like in a messy low bun with some hair strands in the front, I'd want some cute white flowers in my hair too.
When I was a teen I wanted to get married barefoot… I still think it would be cute, but, idk, maybe I'll be a civilized person and wear some shoes.
I like the idea of being a pretty flower child bride.

i been waiting for a thread like this. pic related is mine. it's by a japanese brand kuraudia, the brand that made the disney princess wedding dresses. these are usually only available from rental stores in japan, but i got mine for 10,000 yen (~$100 USD) from a girl who bought it from the rental shop. it has a tiny tiny bit of ripped tulle that i'm repairing, but other than that it's a steal! they cost a ton to rent and the girl said she bought the used one for $7k. i think that combing y!jauctions is a great way to get a cheaper dress that isn't going to be available in your country!

Catherine Deane, Lita
https://www.bhldn.com/Bride/Lita-Gown-Ivory/
For a whopping $2400. Shop around on bhldn and the designer’s site for similar styles for inspiration!
You should look around for vintage, 1920s inspired dresses. You could also try second hand websites where women could be selling theirs

The designer has one that’s just as beautiful and almost a grand cheaper. If you added a lace shawl or something? Or maybe 2.4 is no big deal to you and then I say go for it! I do particularly love the silk of the Lita. Hope I helped some!

Tbh I’m a massive tightass and my plan is to make my own dress. I already sew and have a few years to master the fabrics, and to have a dream dress for thousands less seems like a win-win!

If someone has the money and wants to, then yeah blow a few grand on it but imo it’s wasteful. I’d much rather invest my time than money we could put towards a house or new car.

No problem! There’s one retroactive condition to my help haha you’ve gotta post your finished dress here! It sounds awesome. If I was talented, then I would make my own as well. I have a skilled friend I could ask but it’s a HUGE task. Saying that, it’s been my dream to get married in a Vera Wang dress.

And I know 2.4k sounds like a lot but I also know some people who view it like $240. Some people’s perspective on money gets twisted. I know someone who spent more on a car than I did on college. If it’s the dress of their dream and within their means, I don’t see a problem. I understand people wanting to support designers they admire. I just did a quick browse of their site and the designer was raised in South Africa so a portion of the sales goes to a South Africa charity which is pretty neat.

Sure not in every culture but it’s popularity in modern western culture it absolutely is.

The purity of white was important in baptism, but unless you were exceptionally rich you didn’t own white anything. It was hard to launder without yellowing and was worn as a sign of wealth and status because they could afford conspicuous consumption. Even then the white gown was almost certainly going to be rework, then dismantled and resewn into a new garment. Queen Victoria had her wedding dress repurposed.

It wasn’t until after WWII that it was commonplace for brides outside of exceptionally wealthy families to wear white.

Please tho, give me your alternate history based on nothing

I’m the only girl in my family so it’s always been established I’d wear my mothers wedding dress, it looks almost identical to pic related but my dream has always been to get the long train cut off and have it altered to be a tea length dress, and to get the puff sleeves cut off and cap or long sleeves put back in place (depends on what time of year I get married). Since the dress is so formal I’ve also dreamed that for the reception I’m gonna wear a white gunne sax dress, which is definitely more my day to day vibe but I don’t mind wearing my mother’s wedding dress just because my grandmother got married in a suit so she didn’t have a wedding dress for my mom.

You're reading a lot into my intentions when I spent three seconds writing a comment that stemmed from thinking, "Ha it kinda looks like a Greek pillar. I wonder if anyone else thought that." That's it. No big pretentious agenda trying to show off on an anonymous image board, which doesn't make sense in the first place. The "not everyone knows" thing was a basic observation; what's common knowledge to you may not be to everyone else. (And >>158257 didn't see it, so it may not have even been the dressmaker's goal.) Nowhere did I state that most people wouldn't see a pillar-like design, nor that they'd be idiots for not doing so.

Think of me as an arrogant bitch if it makes you happy, but there was zero harm or condescension intended. Anyway back on topic, pretty dresses.

Black tulle used like in your pic is costumey imo, though i'm not opposed to a black and white wedding dress. Picrel are examples of white and black used together but with stiffer, more tailored fabrics. I think construction makes or breaks the tacky question. Yeah I used the Sims 4 lol

bumping to re-ignite this thread. I'm more geared towards 1920s styled wedding dresses that have long veils, but slimmer silhouettes. I t sucks that I can't look at the dresses themselves on their own, and just have to look at wedding photos from the 1920s that don't properly show the dresses, because whenever I type '1920s wedding dress' I just get modern looking dresses that look nothing like the 1920s

Try searching for fashion illustrations, catalogues, and sewing patterns. You'll get more detail from those than you will from wedding photos. Dumping a few things I found searching stuff like '20's wedding fashion plates' and '20's bridal catalogue' on Pinterest, which is ofc great for this type of thing.
