My contribution will be rather obscure, but as someone who grew up with a SNES, I was exposed to a game called "Super Pinball: Behind the Mask". Bless Courage for bringing horror as a genre to mainstream cartoons.
It was such a surreal show with the middle of nowhere atmosphere and use of 3D or sometimes real images to give an uncanny effect.
I don't remember actually being scared of anything from the show, but I remember there was one episode that made me sad. The one with the Cat in the mask trying to save her bunny friend from the dog gang. It touched on abusive relationships, implied rape and distrust of other dogs men because of trauma, it was strangely adult.
At the end the cat reunites with her really good bunny 'friend' with Courage's help yeah they couldn't hide that relationship I'm surprised they let such a heavy episode air.

So I literally never realized Jenova in FFVII was supposed to be generic hot lady bod until I saw this image and how they portrayed her/it in the remake. I thought exactly like pic rel where it was this grotesque mutant entity and it scared the shit out of me when I first saw it in game. Thing haunted me for years until all the mystique was taken away. So one of the cheats warped you to different areas in the game. One of those was the ghost Castle Town full of ReDeads, so I occassionally encountered them by accident when I forgot which cheat that was. That's one of the reasons I preferred to play MM lol
