I've never played WOW, but I did play TERA. the community in FF14 is older, so you're less likely to run into annoying shithead teenagers/pre-teens. There's a lot of different ways to stay social in the game, including having 1 free company (a guild basically), and up to 8 different link shells, which are basically like chat rooms that can hold up to 250 people each. So you can make your own/join link shells for just social things, or role playing, or raiding, etc etc etc.
Also, a lot depends on your server. some servers are known for certain things, like Gilgamesh is the "raiding server" and Balmung is the "role-playing server" faerie being the "LGBT friendly server" and so on. I'm in Aether world obviously, so that's just the ones I know of personally.

Today I was in a high level area grinding with a party of people for required items/crystals. The party leader was level 60 and already had all the crystals they needed, but stuck around for 2+ hours and transported everybody across the map and directed the party to the next grinding location just because they wanted to help out. Didn't benefit them at all, they just did it to be nice.
I've been on two servers, Moogle and Lich EU, but those are my general experiences so far. People are really friendly.
I tried TERA once and I get exactly what you mean though. I only played for a small amount of time but the game was loaded with a disproportionate amount of aggressive, rude players who made playing the game a chore, and WoW's playerbase is now split between casual noobs who don't know what the fuck they're doing and cba to learn, and vintage players who are angry about how casualised the game has become but are too sentimental to leave.

I was discussing with my boyfriend the other day that what it is about FFXIV: ARR that has allowed it to successfully break away from the WoW mould and set itself up as a successful, independent MMO.
One of the big things we came to was the storytelling aspect. In WoW when a cutscene occurs it's almost exclusively just a case of you watching the big, main players like Varian Wrynn or Garrosh Hellscream stomp around, but your character got very little screentime. Despite this during Cataclysm they implemented this change where suddenly you were the HERO. You were no longer this little scrub running around in mismatched gear doing pleb jobs for random NPC's, you were the HERO and you were SO IMPORTANT and all of your actions were supposed to be super instrumental to the game, and yet…. it never felt like you were actually anything special. The game became linear as fuck and that wall of fantasy was broken down every time you entered into a city and found yourself surrounded by hundreds of players geared exactly the same way all doing exactly the same quests.
What FFXIV: ARR has done differently is that your character is actually present in the vast majority of cutscenes WITH all the main characters. You see your character react and develop emotionally in tandem with the development of the plot, and even 'when' you do hit max level, you still get random NPC questgivers who don't know who the fuck you are shittalking you and telling you go out and find their wayward niece and if you're lucky they'll pay you 200 Gil for the trouble, not like in WoW the way every NPC questgiver began being like "O-OH MY, HERO, IT'S YOU, THE HERO! HERO, YOU MUST DO THIS THING, THE FATE OF THE WORLD DEPENDS ON IT"…. whilst their were like 6 guys behind you all picking the exact same quest.
The class system is A+ and the FUCKING HILDIBRAND QUESTS ARE SO FUCKING FUNNY O LAWD
That's something I actually really appreciate about the game; it has a genuine sense of humour.

Though if you want to become a raider first try some extremes through duty/party finder, always make sure to add people you get along with (you can find them in contacts). As for RP, each server is different. Besides Limsa you can find people in Gridania (near the main crystal there are always some awesome bards, you can request them to play song from the game or whatnot) or in adventurer's guild in Ul'dah. Don't rush through msq and do blue quests. Some really iconic dungeons, trials and game mechs are locked behind blue quests, as well as all raids basically. I would recommend giving crafting/gathering a shot. The rotation can be quite fun, and if you start early you'll br rich af sooner. Make sure to look up your rotation as BLM's levelling is a clusterfuck, it changes completely every 10 levels lol. Just spend as much time in fire phase as possible and always cast something, even if scythe (remove that skill from your hotbar around level 70 though, unless you get into deep dungeons). If you have any problems with your skills feel free to ask!

I finally got through queue hell nonnies and was able to finish up the final dungeon and trial. I had such a good time and the highlights of the story for me were definitely Venat and Elpis. I love how they essentially gave us the creation story of Hydaelyn and showed her being so badass. The music and map design were also so fantastic, I just really really loved everything, save maybe some of the shitty lvl 88 fetch quests.
