>have you ever written fanfiction?
nope
>how frequently do you read/write fan fiction?
well recently ive been reading a lot
>whats the weirdest fan fiction youve written and or read?
probably just weird fetish shit in my main ship tags mpreg, piss, tickling, whatever other weird fetishes
>what fandoms tend to have the best and or worst fan fics?
i dont think any fandom has the best or worst but bigger fandoms you will find more variety in the content you're looking for, probably worst fandoms are ones trying to police content posted on sites that were made for no censorship like ao3 where you can post whatever fucked up fantasy you want and will never be taken down

what fandom anon?

No. 16437

I like long angsty slow burns the best, with a variety of different AUs depending on my mood. Typically m/m because that's all there ever seems to be, but I love finding f/f stories, even if it's just genderbent m/m ships

Honestly fanfictions to me have a different feel to them as opposed to published works, and the tropes common in them are typically hard to find outside of fanfic, so I really only read them because I don't know where to find amateur writers or even published books, that have all the qualities of a well written fanfic.

Needless to say I read fanfictions from big fandoms even if I don't necessarily like the actual fandom or media it comes from. As long as I'm somewhat familiar with the characters.

The little F/F I can find, or M/M slow burn with no smut

Yeah, when I was like 10.
>how frequently do you read/write fan fiction?

MLP fetish fics. I won't even go into detail.

Quite frequently, to be honest
>whats the weirdest fan fiction youve written and or read?
A JFK x Nikita Kruschev fanfic that's also a parody of My Inmortal. It's hilarious tho

>whens the last Time youve read fanfiction?

Character focus, lots of angst, canon compliant (don't like AUs at all), friendship (sometimes romance but mostly find those cringy)
>have you ever written fanfiction?
no
>how frequently do you read/write fan fiction?
Dunno, it's definitely gotten less over time though.
>whats the weirdest fan fiction youve written and or read?
Not the weirdest ones I've stumbled upon, but the "weirdest" ones I've actually enjoyed: canon retellings where one character who is originally able-bodied has a disability.
I also like real people fanfic which is obviously really weird to most people.
>what fandoms tend to have the best and or worst fan fics?
hmmm…I feel like whenever more material gets released the fanfics go up in quality, so more recent media has better fics imo

Man, I just hate my writing style and don't feel like I'm doing justice to the world and characters I care about.

I hardly read fanfiction, though, and if I do, it's oneshots or loosely connected, episodic multi-chapter fics. Those 20+ chapter long behemoths give me the impression they're just stringing the reader along for views, clicks, or kudoses.

>whens the last Time youve read fanfiction?
Right now
>what kind of fanfiction do you tend to gravitate towards
Explicit, m/m and long, I love slow build with lots of sexual tension. I just want to focus on the characters and the romantic development, so I'm not into attempts at action, sci fi, fantasy etc. The simpler and less prominent the setting the better so I gravitate towards school/college, generic sort of modern aus. I like gimmicky romcom scenarios, angst when it's done right and isn't melodrama. Fluff and slice of life bore me, 'established relationship' is an automatic no because seeing the relationship go from friends/enemies/etc to lovers is the best part. Once they're together I check out.

Anything Fallout related lol. This is so boring, but generally I like things that seem feasible within the universe they take place in with minimal interaction from the main characters of that fiction. Like interesting side stories that take place outside of the main plot. I don't care about what your lone wanderer is up to. I'd rather see what some farmer from Arefu is doing or learn about a scorned NCR deserter. No romances, no smut.

the harry potter fandom was full of disturbing fanfics before fandom social justice became the norm. "dobby stretches sir" stands out in my mind. Dumbledore's Army and the Year of Darkness (written by lolcow canditate thanfiction) was a weirdly traditionalist and shockingly gory mess.

>what fandoms tend to have the best and or worst fan fics?

i hate to say it but kpop fandom has the best reader inserts. supernatural fandom is full of garbage fanfiction. harry potter is home to the most famously bad fanfic of all time. any big fandom is bound to have a ton of shit fanfiction, it is inevitable.

Same here. I remember when I was like 10 years old, I was REALLY into Inuyasha. At that time, I discovered fan fiction, and read a lot of PG fan fiction that didn't really have any steamy romance in it. It was mostly poorly Mary Sue self insert garbage, but 10 year old me liked it enough that I got really into reading fanfiction.

One day, I stumbled on a "lemon" fan fiction (featuring Sango and Miroku). I had no idea what "lemon" meant going in. I remember being horrified at first, especially since I only had a basic understanding of sex (Penis goes in vagina and a baby is made). Suddenly I was learning way more details about sex that I was never told in school or church. Perverted curiosity got the better of me and I ended up reading a few more. Most of them were terrible and I didn't even finish reading them. However, I did start to get really into reading mature fan fiction. I mean, even though I only had a basic understanding of sex, I knew I really wanted Kagome and Inuyasha to hook up, and I knew that part of getting married meant you would have to have sex and make a baby. Fan fiction was how I learned what "baby making" entails.

One fateful day, I came across a Miroku and Inuyasha lemon. I felt dirty reading it (This was during a time when homosexuality was considered really taboo, and I come from a super religious family), but curiosity got the better of me.

As I'm sure most here know, lots of fan fiction is not written in a direct way. Rather than saying "Inuyasha stuck his dick in Miroku's asshole", it was written as something like "Inuyasha put himself inside Miroku". This sentence makes perfect sense as an adult, but as a 10 year old, the meaning wasn't so clear. I just assumed that wiener's were really stretchy and could expand really wide.

I believed this for a couple of years… I still cringe at the thought.

it’s the same with writing; i try to work on updates at least a little bit every day but it depends on how motivated/inspired i feel. sometimes i write for hours and other times i can’t even write a usable sentence. i take notes basically all the time though but don’t really consider it writing (though it’s definitely an important part of the process).

The sex scenes are so boring or badly written most of the time I just give up in the middle of chapters. It's been a while since I read anything due to disappointment though. Also,

I'm a fujo so gay shit (on a side note fuck people who tag there tranny stories as m/m on AO3 I hate having to sort through them for more recent fandoms, thank goodness for the new updates letting me blacklist tags). I'll read any story assuming it's competently written and not a stupid AU or High School story, the exception being ghosts and deathfics. My favorite kinds are Canon Divergence fics, angst, and slowburn. I prefer longer plot oriented fics with gay romance on the side, if it's just 100k of porn or sappy shit I lose interest real fast.
>have you ever written fanfiction?
Yes but it's shitty poorly written garbage, and I've only ever posted anonymously on kinkmemes.
>how frequently do you read/write fan fiction?
Not very often since most kinkmemes I like are dead and I'm not posting my work on a fanfiction site, not even anonymously
>whats the weirdest fan fiction youve written and or read?
There was a really strange fill on one of the old One Piece kinkmemes where the male members of the crew were stranded on a island and the angry islanders captured them and then made them gather 5 fruits. As the members came back one at a time they were forced to shove the fruit up their asses and if they could get all of them in at once they'd be let go, if they couldn't they'd die. It focused on Zoro shoving a bunch of apples up his ass and almost getting them all in, but during the last one he ends up in a laughing fit and fails. The punchline of the story was that he just saw Sanji returning to the islanders with coconuts. I read it like 10 years ago but it's really stuck with me just because of how bizarre and funny it was.
>what fandoms tend to have the best and or worst fan fics?
Some really fucking awful ones are:
Osomatsu-san (Really disappointing considering there is lots of potential for angst considering the taboo nature of the relationships most of these fanfics focus on. Instead its all Hesowars AU garbage.)
Pokemon (Too much OC shit and garbage to sort through, does have some good fics hiding in there.)
Real Person Fanfiction (It's awful, no exceptions. It's also considerably worse written than most out there and I have no idea why)
Best Fandoms:
Evangelion (Advoiding all the Kawoshin garbage, there is actually a lot of interesting character studies and reflective fics here)
Persona 4 (A ton of interesting alternative takes on the murder mystery plot, some with a better killer reveal than the actual game has. Non-shipping fics are better than the romance ones)
Yu-Gi-Oh! (Nothing really specifc, it just has a suprising amount of good fanfics.)

I updated it every month, but when I stopped (because I didn't have enough free time anymore), some of the hardcore fans of my fic started pressuring me into continuing it. They still write me messages one year later… I always wanted to finish that story, but now it feels like a chore and I will probably not go back to it.
>how frequently do you read/write fan fiction?
I used to read them a lot when I was a teenager. Now, I usually get a nostalgia attack once every few years and start obsessing over fanfiction/fandom in general again until it suddenly stops.
>whats the weirdest fan fiction youve written and or read?
I usually avoid weird stories. Mpreg for example is something I never understood.
>what fandoms tend to have the best and or worst fan fics?
Like >>16473 said: media geared towards older/adult consumers. Also, weird/rare/"ugly" pairings, because it's usually grownups who see their appeal. This one is weird, but after playing GTA V, I checked if there were fanfics about Michael & Trevor. They are not my taste, but I thought that their deep friendship & the backstabbing that takes place in the game are some A+ template for dramatic smut fics. And indeed, there were some and they were great! Old fandoms have amazing writers, too. I recently watched "The Gladiator" again and searched for fanfics afterwards. The fandom is dead, but there were some very good stories that were written in 2000.
I'm not sure about the worst fandoms, but I've read some really bad Jrock fanfics.

>whens the last Time youve read fanfiction?
Not in many moons.
>what kind of fanfiction do you tend to gravitate towards
Anything really long with a good plot and written almost like a really good rap song. Where you are describing details of objects and places almost to a rhythm that makes the story have a unique/mood atmosphere. That's what makes a great story, it feels natural and I understand the character as a human more.
>have you ever written fanfiction?
Yes. I actually love to write fanfiction way more than read it.
>how frequently do you read/write fan fiction?
I write it whenever I have the time. I am one of those people who has 4000+ long chapters.
>whats the weirdest fan fiction youve written and or read?
Anything related to killing stalking that falls under the category of gore porn. It's always weird, gross and I hate it everytime.
>what fandoms tend to have the best and or worst fan fics?
Oh visual novels fandoms tend to be the worst. Especially if the novel is erotic in anyway. People usually either try to rehash the in-game story or write pwp and pretend it was worth posting. The smaller the fandom, the worse it is. A lack of imagination is the biggest problem with fanfiction that I notice.

No. 16493

>what kind of fanfiction do you tend to gravitate towards
Darkfic, for sure. But I´m not the biggest fan of gory porn/rape just for the sake of it, I´m more into physiological trauma and abuse, but in that particular genre it´s hard to actually find something that is lengthy, well written and feels realistic and not pwp written by a 15-year old.
>have you ever written fanfiction?
I used to write TH-fics about the Kaulitz twins on gsm away back. Luckily, I grew out of that pretty quick and realized that my writing was shit.

>whats the weirdest fan fiction youve written and or read?

Not the weirdest, but when I read HP-fiction I came across a Neville/Snape fic, but I didn't´t properly read the tags when I started so I didn't´t know that was the main pairing. It was very long and a slowburn, so when the slash started it hit me right in the face, but I was already invested in the fic and it was pretty well-written, so I ended up bawling my eyes out over a very dub-con pairing. It was years ago, but I still think about from time to time.

>what fandoms tend to have the best and or worst fan fics?

RPF definitely has some of the worst. Probably because those fandoms tends to attract really young and inexperienced writes who self-insert and basically just writes guilty pleasure fics with no plot.
I don´t know any fandoms that are overflowing with amazing fics, but the bigger ones definitely have some very good writers. I also agree with the anons above about it being hard to find lengthy fics that are centered around a strong, original plot. They´re definitely there, but they are hard to find and often they´re not even popular.

I've been reading fanfic since I discovered the internet at age 12 and I'm almost 30 now. I like fluffy, comedic fics or fics that focus on domestic living. My main fandom is already really dark and we know that the main characters are most likely not going to have a happy ending.

I write fanfic, but not all are published anywhere. Actually most of them are the same themes, Character A gets raped, Character B comforts them after. After a while, I realise that I write these themes because its a sort of self fulfilment fantasy. I was sexually abused as a kid and it just makes me happy? to write these fics. I mostly focus on the aftercare because I guess I really wanted someone to be Character B to my Character A, but sadly no one was/is. No one other than anons on the internet knows about my CSA so I've been bottling it up for a long time only to write out these specific scenes over and over again with a few variations on them.

I should probably see a therapist for this, but they're expensive as fuck in my country without a referral and I don't want to go to a doctor and tell them these in person lol. So, fanfic's all I've got for now.

Romance, AUs, anything containing dark themes. In all flavors. I don’t care for slice of life or pregnancy/family fic, or A/B/O dynamics.
>have you ever written fanfiction?
Yes. I still write it from time to time.
>how frequently do you read/write fan fiction?
I’ll have periods where all I want to do is read fanfiction, followed by periods where I want nothing to do with it. I write it less often.

Probably that weird Glee fic where one of the characters had to shove a dead bird up his ass. Or that Power Rangers fic where the Pink Ranger gets brutally tortured. I didn’t go out of my way to search for these, just to make things clear: I was sent them by friends.
>what fandoms tend to have the best and or worst fan fics?
Best fanfiction: older fandoms comprised mostly of older fans. Star Trek comes to mind. Also smaller fandoms tend to have better fic. Worst? The opposite. I can no longer read fic from anime fandom because it’s all just… bad.

Used to be really into dark fic and would go on kink memes and just purposefully seek out the fics with fucked up shit like kidnapping, monster sex and rape. I kind of went to the other extreme now and tend to read more fluffy fics with no sex. I'm still into the fucked up weird smut fics, I just find they're harder and harder to find now and it doesn't help I have higher standards.

>have you ever written fanfiction?

I've come up with ideas, for stuff and daydream about where I'd go with it but have yet to actually dip my toe into it.

>how frequently do you read/write fan fiction?

Usually every few weeks or so.

>whats the weirdest fan fiction youve written and or read?

Oh god … I remember reading a lot of fucked up Fullmetal Alchemist fanfiction back in middle school, but my memory is pretty muddled now. I do remember reading a Homestuck fanfic where Sollux gets raped by bees. Oh, and there was one Rick & Morty fanfic that legitimately made me feel nauseous, I had to stop reading and lay down. It was about Morty getting some kind of parasitic alien in his abdomen and Rick adminsetering some kind of general anaesthesia and rooting around in his guts trying to get it out, with Morty awake and conscious of everything and could just … Feel him rooting around inside his guts. I remember it being grotesquely graphic and detailed.

>what fandoms tend to have the best and or worst fan fics?

I don't know about worst, but I remember Homestuck having some of the most fucking bizarre fanfiction of any fandom that I've seen. Transformers had a surprising amount of really well written fics and actually had probably one of the best written fics I've ever read. I read it back in like 2010-2011 or something and I think it was called "Swindle's Log" or something. It was about Swindle being put into this jail right across from Shockwave who starts playing these mind games with him and I remember it being really intense.

I feel like the marvel fandom is older on average, so most of them at least know how to write. And thank god for the new "exclude" option on ao3, so that I can filter out all that bts kpop shit lol.

The 1st fic I ever read was vampire!sasuke/human!naruto. Despite never being part of a fandom, I've always really been into "bad" dark/long haired guys, so I really like the loki/tony stark pairing. I also really like if the smaller more feminine guy is the top/dom, mainly because I hate if the bottom dude is written all weak and girly. I also like hannibal/will (because mads mikkelsen is hot). Even though I do read really disgusting shit like incest, breeding, knotting and rape roleplays, i can't read it, if it isn't consensual, that would be too much even for me.

Recently I read the hottest fic about dom!timothee chalamet/sub!armie hammer, but despite getting updated regularly, it was suddenly deleted, I'm heartbroken lol.

Pic related is the best story I ever read. The auther even sold it as a book(?), but now you somehow can neither buy nor read it online.
If anybody ever came across something similar, I'd be very thankful for your recommandations.

i'm trying to find some good ones to read right now!

>what kind of fanfiction do you tend to gravitate towards

definitely slash, some yuri (but honestly it tends to be boring, which makes sense as fanfic is usually written by sexually repressed women ime) and i love longer fics as long as they're well written. i used to like really dramatic, dark fic when i was younger but as i've gotten older i prefer fluff/smut, or some reasonable drama but nothing like mind-break, tons of gratuitous rape, etc. the fandoms i'm into currently are FFXIV and BNHA though i tend to look up fanfic of anything i watch/enjoy. some of the very first fanfics i ever read were for naruto and tokyo mew mew. i also used to love bandom and still re-read some of the great fics that came out of that.

>have you ever written fanfiction?

yes but i've never finished one. and most of the recent stuff involves my ocs and is really self-indulgent so i'll never publish it anywhere. but it makes me happy so whatever lol

>how frequently do you read/write fan fiction?

i don't write it too frequently, only when i have a burst of inspiration. i read it pretty frequently, at least a couple times a week, though lately i've been reading more doujins/original yaoi. imo it's been getting kinda harder to wade through the shitty stuff and get to the good stuff, but it could also just be me getting old and the fandoms themselves staying young ;-;

>whats the weirdest fan fiction youve written and or read?

as for what i've written myself, uh, i have a few fairly odd kinks that don't get much love so i've written them for myself. for what i've read… fuck there's been a lot. some of the supernatural fic i read during my short stay in that fandom was pretty fucked up. lots of weird demonic incest and gore and just… it was bad.

>what fandoms tend to have the best and or worst fan fics?

there's really bad stuff everywhere, but also really good stuff in the most surprising places. honestly the best fics i've ever read remain bandom pieces. though it's rare to find fics on the same scope these days, so i try not to compare. i'm happy with mindless fluff as long as it's enjoyable in the end!

I love reader-inserts, it's sort of a guilty pleasure for me. I've read so many but there's this one person on quotev who's fanfictions I really like since the plots are interesting to me. They mostly do "Yandere" type characters who are basically OCs so if you're not into that chances are you won't like these. Plus, a lot of them are really long like over 400 pages.

https://www.quotev.com/28693574

This next one I've read so many times, starting in freshmen year lol I can't really tell if I like it because of nostalgia or if it's really good so you can be the judge of that, it's a creepypasta reader insert without feeling like a cliche one. It's pretty long and it's less about romance and more about them coming to trust each other.

https://www.quotev.com/story/5032576/Chains-Eyeless-Jack-x-Reader/1

These are just an extra I found while looking through my library, I remember them being pretty good.

The long (and angsty) buildups is what I live for. I often feel ashamed of myself for wasting hours and even days reading long fanfics only to drop them after the couple gets together.

Slow burn + psychological themes(tags depend of the fandom) is a great combo that I never get tired of.

i was talking to a friend about this the other day. she said that she thought 00s anime fandom got a pretty raw deal - yeah, most of the fic was garbage but when it was good it was above beyond anything else she'd read in other fandoms. my theory is when you're in a fandom environment where no one has any shame in being "out there" you get a ton of shitty self-insert fanfic but the 5-10% that isn't is far more creative & experimental.

I only read fanfiction for content on my ships tbh, so fanfiction centred on my ship
I avoid AU stories because of how many authors straight up rewrite everything with barely any resemblance to the original work and everything turns to shit so the fanfics I read are canon compliant

>have you ever written fanfiction?

Never written fanfiction myself, but I like to play out stories in my head since I'm confident that writing it out would probably spiral into something cringy

>how frequently do you read/write fan fiction?

smallish anime fandoms and other obscure media ( lets say, yume 2kki ) tend to have well written fiction or complete trash. kpop is generally mediocre with both plots and writing but when you find a good one, it's damn good. i've yet to find a kpop fic that was just unreadable.

Yes, lots of times. I don't get the time to write anymore though and I never had the guts to actually publish anything but given some of rhe garbage that floats out there I don't know how I could be.

>how frequently do you read/write fan fiction?

I read daily but write maybe every few months if I have the time.

>whats the weirdest fan fiction youve written and or read?

This wasn't necessarily the weirdest but it was by far the worst. Everyone likes to give credit to My Immortal as the worst one out there but for me it's My Inner Life by Linksqueen. I've been into fanfiction for ages and this is one of the greatest gems I have ever found. It has everything from poorly written sex scenes, drinking during pregnancy, and terrible self-insert. It's a Legend of Zelda fanfic a girl named Linksqueen/Jenna wrote about her lucid dreams with Link. I don't think it ever got as famous as My Immortal because of the length and the fact that it came out in the early 2000s(or earlier, I can't quite recal atm). The writer was known to have massive meltdowns when people criticized it as hot garbage, which it was lol. It was taken off fanfiction.net it was so bad but someone went and archived it along with her many spergouts.

Link to story: http://linksqueen.tripod.com/mil.html

Link to the website as a whole where you can find her rants and other things: http://linksqueen.tripod.com/guild.htm

Beware of how awful it is. If someone can somehow sit through all the cringe like I did let me know so we can laugh at it together.

>what fandoms tend to have the best and or worst fan fics?

All fandoms have their good and bad fics so I can't say. I tend to gravitate towards the Tales of series(I used to be real heavy into Tales of Symphonia). If you hang around tumblr chances are you're going to run into dumpsterfire writings. The worst fics on there tend to be the ones that shoehorn diversity and all that like trans!Sasuke or asexual!Naruto. Stuff like this is in every fandom so if I'm looking for trash or quality I just avoid it. If I'm gonna read trash I'm at least going to find some that's actually entertaining and not some 13 year old's attempt at diversity.

I know wowoashley from her current fandom (nct) and finding out about her past isn't that surprising considering how she acts now lol. She attracts a lot of young fans who constantly seek attention and validation from her, and people seem to either really like her or hate her lmao. She pissed off a lot of shippers from a huge ship by spreading a negative opinion in regards to that particular pairing, which many of her impressionable followers took as a fact, and started a rare pair which grew incredibly huge considering how none of the 2 members even interacted before she spread her gospel. The consensus here is that she's very influential for reasons, probably because she writes fics with a lot of popular tropes. Personally used to enjoy her work, but reading fics from other authors kinda dimmed my opinion of her writing. They're entry level if you're interested in getting into the ship.

She hates 2 of the popular ships that her obscure ship is involved in, probably due to insecurity or something lol. She likes shading the fics written for these 2 ships, citing how they're predictable and how the dynamic written for them is heteronormative (as if hers weren't far off).

Say her obscure ship is YZ while the popular ship is XY; she bashed X after a particular vlive where X shook Y off and was sort of ignoring Y and she took it really personally, going on a spiel about how X is terrible and XY ship is soooo unhealthy, as if she's personally involved in their lives and that XY haven't been friends for nearly 5 years who constantly playfight this way. Her group of writer friends ran with it and it somehow became a thing within the YZ fandom that Y deserves better (with Z) and that XY is a toxic ship, which is fucking stupid imo these are real people not your fantasies.

Lowkey think she's self-inserting as Y to ship with her bias Z, since she's always writing Y in roles that she was involved in, writing him studying the same major, writing him having the same interests as her, constantly stating that Z is the perfect boyfriend and how YZ has the perfect relationship that she wants for herself despite them having only 5 minutes of actual interaction, etc etc. Funny thing is how she disclosed all of this on her cc as if no one would connect the dots.

Sorry for the rant, it's just amusing to dig up and unload all this shit. I used to like YZ but the shippers made it so unbearable.

nah the crackship is hyuckhei (haechan/lucas) and the popular ships they’re involved in are markhyuck (mark/haechan) for hyuck and luwoo (lucas/jungwoo) for lucas so i’m guessing those two. she’s written markhyuck before tho so idk where that came from but mark hates affection and hyuck is super affectionate so that’s probably why

i kind of figured she disliked jungwoo for daring to get in the way of her crackship. she’s portrayed him as such a vile person in some stories who’s just mean for the evulz so yeah that shit makes sense now. seeing how she wrote him reminded me of a villain a 10yo would create it was that simplistic.

can’t wait for 116 to debut so xuxi will be away for a while and i’m praying for cantonese line to become the next big ship. then there’ll be more variation in lucas ships + people will hopefully grow tired of hyuckhei and the gimmick will die down

i read fanfiction about most of the things i read/watched in my teens. lately, i've been craving it, but my fave author apparently baleeted everything.

someone, please, throw some s&m shit towards my way. i don't care whether it's m/m or m/f, i used to read gintama fics because gintoki there was a self acclaimed sadist, so it just worked with anything. but i'm also fine with naruto (i guess?? it's been years since i've looked up any naruto content), gangsta., cowboy bebop, the witcher, idk stuff like that. i miss fan fiction. helps put me to sleep, actually. takes my mind off of daily stuff.

Boyfriend to Death fics are always pretty awesome, although most fans seem to have the same kinks so it's pretty easy to find stuff I'm into. Although the game is ~gender neutral~ so a lot of the fics are too.

He didn't even change the character's name.
He also wrote a "fanfiction", also copypasted from another book.

It wasn't just smut fics either but also humor and fluffy fics too. Just whatever people wanted to prompt. This was also a time before fandoms were completely infested with the mindset that certain kinks were problematic and that everyone had to be trans. Whatever happened to don't like, don't read?

unpopular among young fandom kiddos who think everything must be pure uwu safe space family friendly content, pretty popular among people who were in fandom before the tumblr sjw crowd.

sidenote has anyone ever seen teens on tumblr claiming 'im a minor and this makes me uncomfortable' its such bullshit too since they almost always have nsfw blogs and explicit fics bookmarked on their ao3, i think these kids get a high over feeling like they have the power to make impressionable people succumb to them.

No. 16622

except the slippery slope argument is a fallacy. just because you censor one thing doesnt mean youre going to censor anything else; why would it? and theres a big difference between writing fanfiction about fictional characters and about real people. personally i couldnt give less of a fuck if someone wants to write 200k fanfics about fictional characters killing babies and raping ever minor in a 500 mile radius. but write the same story about a celebrity and yeah, it's wrong, in my opinion.

i know you want to feel like its all fine because it helps you get your rocks off or whatever, ("uwu im expressing myself") but i disagree. the funny thing is that the same people writing these fanfics are usually the people from tumblr getting mad over deepfakes or jennifer lawrence's nude leaks or whatever it is, because "omg guys think they are entitled to our bodies for sexual gratification!". how are real-person fanfics any different? pick a side.

and im not an anti-fujo. ive almost certainly been reading slash and yaoi as least as long as you have. and i dont buy into any of the 'stop fetishising gay people!' stuff either, so i guess youll have to create a new strawman.

and usually part of the argument goes that people can separate the 'fanfic' characters with the 'real people', but from what ive seen, teenage girls and young women are utterly mind-numbingly stupid and honestly can't. and i think it's harmful.

but all that being said, since ive written that post a month ago, ive realised that it really doesnt matter what ao3's policy is. even if they did decide to ban 'real-person' fics or just fics with real minors, 50 websites would pop up in its place that dont give a fuck. much like something like rape, its always going to exist; you cant stop people from doing it. the best youre gonna be able to do is take precautions as the victim. thats just the way the world is.

hi anon, i myself am not into irl people fics, but i will always defend the right for women/girls to express themselves which was why i got so passionate there. ao3 is one of the few places with no rules and i think thats special. i feel its important for girls to explore the sexuality and feelings with fanfic, god knows how long women have always been put down for it, sjw culture is just another form of silencing women. idk how id be today if i didnt get into fanfic through shitty pokeshipping fics on deviantart as a kid.
most teenagers are just dramatic, i think its insulting to claim young women are stupid and cant seperate reality from fiction, no girl thinks her favorite boyband member will suddenly fall in love with her. with things like deepfakes i think the difference is trying to control the appearance of a celebrity vs just writing and imagining it, but thats just my thoughts. i don't have any strong opinions on them.

>whens the last Time youve read fanfiction?

I tend to enjoy one-shots and shorter chaptered works, though I'll read a longer work if it's already complete. I got invested in a fic that I didn't realize was abandoned once when I was like 13 and I've been burned forever lol. Theme-wise, I tend to avoid reader/self inserts and pure kink-focused smut (doesn't offend or gross me out I just don't get much out of it). I also have a rule that if a fic is generally longer than the longest book I own that I've been meaning to read, then I'm not going to read it because I could be using that time to read an actual book. This sounds stupid but it actually saved me from reading that that one smutty House of Cards fic back when I was into BTS because it was longer than Crime and Punishment lol.
>have you ever written fanfiction?
Yes. I used to write it quite a bit as a teen. I deleted it all a few years back and I'm pretty bummed, I don't have much creative writing work from that time and I wish I could see how my style changed and my skill improved.

Older fandoms with older fans have the best by far. Yes, too much. I used to write fanfiction before I knew you could put it online; then shit got real wild. It's been more than ten years since I've started writing fanfiction. I'm in the middle of one now and avoiding the site because a break before a quick update turned into three months.
>how frequently do you read/write fan fiction?
I now write fanfiction annually depending on whether the show/movie I'm into has enough content to drive me along. I read fanfiction weekly, on and off. Depends how shitty I feel. Fanfiction is definitely a very bad coping mechanism I harness.

Surprisingly, despite the cancerous fandom, would say Sherlock was up there with the best. It's been years since I have written fanfic but I'm oddly tempted to again. I think the fandoms are dead though (Harry Potter and Death Note) and it seems like there isn't much enthusiasm for fanfic that isn't about sex or romance (which isn't what I want to write). I remember being in fandom when I was younger and it seemed like people were receptive to a wider variety of genres and when I've tried getting back into it as an older person I was struck by how much more sex and romance dominated the share of fanfic being produced.

Is it still worthwhile? Are people still reading fic in these two fandoms?

Is this really true? I've never really paid attention to the statistics but if I had to hazard a guess, this is largely dependent on fandoms themselves rather than fandom as a whole.

To answer your question: Harry Potter and Death Note will forever be popular fandoms, and I'm positive they'll eat up anything you write, genfic or not, Anon!

I haven't been into any fandoms or read any fanfic lately, but decided to look around on AO3 the other day just to try to find some new stuff to read. And there seems to be a new breed of homophobia in slash fanfic. Authors will write about two men who are going to bone, but then give one of the men a vagina? And they don't tag the fic with a trans tag or even mention the character is trans. They are just a man with a vagina. I guess writing about two men having sex is too icky and wrong, but writing about a man and a woman is bad too because women are not compelling characters? I guess this is just homophobia and internalized misogyny. I remember way back reading slash fic where the guy bottoming would be written to basically act like a girl, but at least they weren't given magic vaginas lol.

No. 36752

Did you see an ABO tag on it? Usually when a random vagina appears in a male/male category fic with no trans tags it's an 'intersex omega'.

I do agree it's internalized misogyny, but it's pretty mild tbh. I think they strongly favour male characters and want to write about them and fit in with the big, popular fandoms, but they're more turned on by het sex and do mental gymnastics to combine the two. I don't think preferring straight porn is homophobic in itself, they just don't care for female characters enough to like straight ships in the first place. That said it honestly fucking repulses me. It's not like vaginas or het sex gross me out, but when I'm envisioning a male character and suddenly they have a vag I feel visceral disgust due to the bait and switch. All I want is for them to put it in the f/m category so I don't have to see it. The only thing worse is surprise tranny shit that they're intentionally quiet about in the tags to act like it's no big deal, it's just as gross but also virtue signalling.

I fucking LOATHE A/B/O dynamics in slashfic.

First off: they don't apply to humans. They don't even apply to wolves, which is where they were originally "observed". Only wolves in captivity do the ranking thing. In wild wolf packs, the "alphas" are just the parents of the other wolves.

Second, humans have their own fucking words to categorize those "types". "Dom", "sub" and "verse". It's fucking gross and weird that animal logic is being applied to humans. This ABO fics also usually have tags for shit like "in heat" or whatever. Fucking retards, that's called ovulating in humans, and only women do it.

Speaking of, this A/B/O shit is just an excuse to treat gay couples like straight ones. Do these fujoshis think that "alpha" and "beta" sound less retarded than "seme" and "uke"? Because they don't. Also, gay relationships often don't have one "manly man" and one "femme boy". I bet all these horrible ABO fics are being written by autistic fujoshis with conservative upbringings who think that gay couples have a "man" and a "woman".

Also, as another anon mentioned, A/B/O fics tend to have mpreg or fakebois, because these weirdos apparently also have pregnancy fetishes. Why even write gay characters if they're going to go to all these lengths to make it as not-gay as possible?

Thanks for the encouragement. I was more interested in the Death Note fanfic than the Harry Potter one and was concerned that fandom would be even deader.

Yeah, it's just a fetish, especially the "in heat" part. Half of the A/B/O are tagged as "Explicit" or "Mature" and the plots only revolve around "porn without plot" or "porn with plot".

I mean, the fanfic authors/characters are always explaining how "all ALPHAS ARE SUPER THIRSTY AND RAGE WHEN THEY ENCOUNTER AN OMEGA IN HEAT AND POUND INTO THEM UNTIL THEY ARE SATISFIED".

Okay so I used to read fanfic when I was between 13 and 15 and it was within a very specific setting and ship. Then I forgot about it…untill a few weeks ago.

Basically, my thirst and unwillgness to deal with IRL men (or porn industry) has led me to read fanfiction again and ….dude wtf. People are writing the wildest shit!

Like, I've seen 25 chapter Mr. Robot fanfics …but they're vampires? Or Stranger Things fanfics but in a modern setting where they're all corporate lawyers??
I know there's much more wild than that but this AU shit is fucking with me. Who writes that??

But the characters end up being completely OOC, so what's the appeal? How would a character like Billy from Stranger Things ever be a corporate lawyer?? From what I've seen, usually those types of AUs start out in one of two ways. a) the author wants to write a more relatable or familiar story using characters they like (usually the cause of coffee shop or high school AUs), or b) they're just trying to write in a way that mixes their interests. I bet the Mr. Robot vampires fic was inspired by Rami Malek being in Breaking Dawn. Same with the lawyers thing, they might be interested in law or were just watching some show or reading some book about it.

No. 40038

>>39995
A mixing of interests. In some of my AUs it's usually done in a setting that could be possible if the creators had the freedom, for example in a few of mine I thought "Hey, both of these things I like are owned by the same company so I would like to see a crossover!" So I write something myself to satisfy my hopes and dreams. I am aware people like the most random things and think "I'd like to see a crossover" without even thinking "Hey, it COULD happen because x and x are both similar".

No. 40046

>>39995
For some of the really AU stuff, some people do it because they want to use certain character archetypes and tropes within their story. But for a lot of it, if you're using a preexisting character and familiar setting or elements from the preexisting canon, then you don't need to spend as much time world building. If you just want to tell stories to a wide audience, then writing an AU fic in a popular fandom will get you more exposure. People are already familiar with the characters and are usually looking for dynamics involving those archetypes.

Some people just want to explore the what-ifs, ranging from timeline diversion to crossovers.

And then you also have those people who just throw the character archetypes out the window, and in the end all they're using is a name and physical description for their fan-casted story.

It is not normalising on the archive's side. Those are literally trigger warnings, the first thing you see about the fic so you won't stumble onto that shit on accident.
It's the writers fault for writing that disgusting filth.
The archive has a policy about not being judgemental and they put those warnings in place because people want to write horrible shit and they can't exactly silence them due to their policy so they are making sure the warnings are in place and the first thing you know about the fic actually.

If you're going to censor stuff, where exactly do you draw the line? Not saying it's okay, but you would need to go through every existing work on the site to get rid of all the vile things, but with the warning system you can just filter them out and authors are using the warning system themselves meaning nobody has to read every single thing to check it for triggering content.

Canon extensions because the series' story is concluded. The original author may write side story smut of the main characters still but any recent ones (if it exists) within the last 8 years aren't being translated and I'm not that interested.

I often prefer AUs depending on the fandom, some canons bore the shit out of me and I'm just interested in the characters. Simple AUs like college or highschool etc are good for exclusive focus on the relationship development, and tbh it's easier for an amateur writer to pull off because they can draw on real life experiences. That's a romantic way to put it, but for me it's like - the more obstacles a couple have to overcome to be together, the more intense their relationship is, and therefore the more indulgent it is for the reader. Two good friends who fall in love and live happily ever after is great irl, but boring af in fiction. Enemies who can't help being attracted to each other and who have a tonne of drama and conflict to work through is way more entertaining and emotionally involved. And no doubt has way more sexual tension if it's that sort of fic, because if you're gonna fuck someone you hate, you have to REALLY want them.

This logic applies to a lot of tropes and story lines, not just enemies to lovers. If it's too easy and straightforward for them to get together, it's boring. That's why I won't read established relationship fic.

You are absolutely right, slow burn mutual pining between friends is a god tier trope. But that's not what I meant when I said friends falling in love, I just worded it in a simplistic way to get my point across. I meant if they had no conflict at all and were just smooth sailing the whole time, that would be boring. Being afraid to confess or assuming the other person isn't into you is definitely the sort of conflict that makes a fic good.

M/M slow burn, angsty. Maybe that's changed now, idk.

Hell yeah. Started with MCR self-insert fics in middle school and evolved into M/M fics of Erwin/Levi from SNK and eventually a weird year-long endeavor into One Direction M/M fics…I am ashamed.

I have read really good works from pretty much every fandom I was ever apart of. MCR had that Frank/Gerard The Dove Keeper fic, SNK had stereobone's shit, 1D admittedly had some good works out there too, none of them I can recall whoops. Worst fan fics? I'm picky about how the characters should be handled that i tend to drop fics if they go too far OOC. I also enjoy self-inserting, but reader fics are too cringey for me to get thru.
Every good fic i've read was abandoned or lost.

Romance slow burns with hurt/comfort angst are my favourite~ but sometimes its just easier to daydream than slog thru pages and pages of ao3.

No. 109932

I find 99.9% of reader inserts horribly executed, even though I shamefully kinda do enjoy the idea. My least favorite trope, apart from the typical romance fanfiction cringe, has to be when they allude to "y/n's" appearance in any way (and 99% of the time I look nothing like her, so all the supposed immersion is gone). Even worse sometimes they just go ahead and slap a picture of "Reader". That's not a reader insert, that's literally just an OC.

Yes! Especially combined with the over the top oh-so-tragic backstories and unrealistic portrayals of bullying/abuse/harrassment etc.

I never liked One Direction, but sometimes I go on wattpad to cringe at the fandom. There were many stories like "One Direction bully you high school AU" where the bullying was just so extreme. Like literally having those five guys beat Y/N to a pulp and no one doing anything about it because they're "high school royalty". Eventually Y/N is fed up and tries to kill herself, obviously fails and 1D are suddenly full of remorse and fall in love with her. What the fuck.

That said, I really do hate the high school AU trope in every single fandom. I even hate it more than coffee shop AU and chatfics.

No. 109983

I sure am glad the MST/sporking trend (basically copy-pasting bad fanfiction and adding "snarky" reactions, usually from the sporker's OCs, in-between the paragraphs) died out. Not because "cringe culture is dead" or some other tumblr shit, but because those characters reacting to the original story were always genuinely unfunny and obnoxious, just as bad the original.

Don't even get me started on those making OCs just for killing/torturing/humiliating the "Mary Sues", that's just A-Log behavior.

yes, later deleted it. wrote a lot more in private
>how frequently do you read/write fan fiction?

>whats the weirdest fan fiction youve written and or read?
most fic of my fave ship has a weird factor because it is impossible unless it's AU. that's not to say people don't try. there's some amazing fics despite the weirdness. Ive also read a ton of demented kink fics out of curiosity or for laughs. I will say the weirdest one, for a different pairing. It involved transforming into a dinosaur while fucking. can't say I liked that but it wasn't as bad as it sounds.
I think rpf takes the cake though as a category of its own. it's the weirdest and I don't think it's ethical, but I find it really funny.
>what fandoms tend to have the best and or worst fan fics?
popular fandoms have the most good and bad. I recently looked in a popular fandom tag and could not believe the amount of a/b/o. I hate a/b/o.
all my ships are on the less popular side regardless of fandom. I prefer it this way because there's less stupidity and craziness in the tag, or if there is then I accept it. When it's a smaller ship you know that you get what you get. Once my favorite ship got more attention, there was an upsurge in chatfic bullshit and a decline in quality.

Anyone else hate the trend of fanfic writers making one half of a m/m or f/f ship trans? And when they don't even mention it in the tags and then get upset when people call them out in the comments and start crying about transphobia. I don't know how much of a bigger trend it is, but it's prevalent in some fandoms and it's really annoying. I'm not even talking about gender-swapping a character, which can be fun, but actually making a character trans and writing about them having disgusting sex and soapboxing about trans issues in a setting where it makes no sense. ntayrt I get your point but if the "cheap pandering" only comes up in a smut scene, I can handle it. I prefer that to a whole fic of gender soapboxing. Also I read m/f sometimes and my brain processes it like that. Blog maybe, but lately I prefer m/f smut because I don't feel out of place by reading it, it's more relevant to me so it's hotter. There is still something unnerving making one of them trans but calling it "gay." At least it's only characters and anything can happen (sort of like futa although that disgusts me— I guess like OP is disgusted by this). Man, suddenly I wonder what fudanshis think; if there's actual gay men seeing it they'd be more put off than us.

To me it feels super homophobic and predatory to have one character in a gay or lesbian pairing be trans. Insisting that a gay man would totally be cool with eating pussy or that a lesbian would totally want to suck a dick is a trend you see in other places on the internet too, not just in fanfiction… It's just very off-putting because this line of thinking doesn't usually stop with fictional characters. They think this should apply to real people too.

Also I don't think that most people are making characters trans to "pander" or to impress their woke friends… they make characters trans because they themselves are trans and they get off to that kind of content. Most of them are projecting onto the character they're transing, they want to BE the character and they want the character to be like THEM.

Mostly darkfics and canon-complacent fics. Sometimes I'll get into an AU if it's interesting and not too out there. Lately, I've been really into well-written reader-insert stuff. Especially ones that focus on side characters or villains.

>have you ever written fanfiction?

I last wrote a fanfic 12 years ago while suffering from a flu. It was a smutty darkfic in which my fictional crush at the time fucked and then murdered a reader-insert. I've had a few ideas since, but I never sat down and wrote any of them.

>how frequently do you read/write fan fiction?

I read every week or so. If I really like a fic I'll re-read it a few times in a week.

>whats the weirdest fan fiction youve written and or read?

Some pretentious Star Fox fanfic that tried to be postmodern and memeing at the same time. It didn't work, but the author was decently skilled and kind of funny.

>what fandoms tend to have the best and or worst fan fics?

Homestuck has by far the worst fanfics I've ever read, but I'm p sure Hamilton has taken that crown. As for the best, Transformers and Mass Effect probably. At least, as far as I've read.

>start itching for a specific scenario and search corresponding tags, to no avail

>months pass, find a ship with interesting dynamic

>it's there
>the EXACT scenario I wanted, with actual good prose
>200k of slow slow burn
>dive in
>OH GOD IT'S PERFECT IT HAS EVERYTHING I WANTED
>last available chapter ends RIGHT BEFORE THE FUCKING CONFESSION
>last update in 2018
>all the other works from the author are incomplete
>no more updates from author, no other works, and dead social media

I should have known that one should NEVER EVER read an incomplete work, but I've been spoiled by people that update their (very good) works once a year (or every 2 years). I should have know and I have only myself to blame.
Fucks sake, I can't imagine something worse for a reader than having the author disappear right on the fucking climax of a fucking slow burn.
And I don't know what is worse in ao3: tagging the dumbest most irrevelant shit with cannonical tags or not tagging anything beyond main characters. At least put the genre and main narrative points in it ffs.

>whens the last Time youve read fanfiction?
2 days ago? i've been meaning to read more but i sleep so late and knock out

>what kind of fanfiction do you tend to gravitate towards

f/m, f/f, reader inserts: it has to be completed because i'm a binger and any length is fine. i slightly prefer shorter ones just because i found that they tend to be more consistent in quality. my smut fics need some semblance of a plot, even if it's only a few paragraphs.
i can read m/m if there's no sex involved, especially the really angsty works but nothing fluffy or overly romantic. idk. sorry fags and fujos.

>have you ever written fanfiction?

nah

>how frequently do you read/write fan fiction?

2-3 nights a week minimum, i try to make it a nightly routine but like i said earlier i just sleep way too late sometimes

>whats the weirdest fan fiction youve written and or read?

i guess rapeshit or tentacle? i skip weird tags that i don't like and what i read isn't weird to me so

>what fandoms tend to have the best and or worst fan fics?

only speaking from experience but kpopfags have awful fics that completely disregard so much, but you might occasionally find a gem. i stopped reading about real people though, shits weird especially when people start projecting their headcanons onto them. besides, there are an immense amount of great fics about fictional works anyway. surprisingly hunter x hunter has terrible fics for such a popular series. teen wolf had shitty fics too, from memory.
i don't even like the series anymore but the naruto fandom unironically had an abundance great fics. there are so many talented people writing for that fandom and i guess it's because it was one of the most entry-level anime back in the day.

personal rant but i have to say that soulmate AUs make me irrationally angry. holy fuck. THERE ARE SO MANY OF THEM. i've tried a million soulmate AUs and not a single one has stuck. where's the excitement if they're destined to be together anyway? at least you know the people spamming uncreative a/b/o fics are just freaky cumsluts getting their kinks out in the easiest way possible

i'm okay with original characters, some of my favorite fics have them and they were fine to begin with. but i read this one fic with an oc who made me think that the author or someone else have put it there as a self insert which i'm cool with but this fic was so grating to read through the many compliments and admiration towards the oc in paragraphs. and they weren't even the main character in the story but somehow they got more like 'she was beautiful', 'her body was fine', or 'her strong willed personality have made everyone respect her'. she was also the first of her kind to become this or that.

like damn, not even the main canon characters ever receive that kind of attention. but i read through it because it was written well, i just skim through the moments where the oc is in the scene. and she was also paired up with a canon character which kinda made it more obvious as to why she was made. her role in the story could've been given to other canon characters and it wouldn't change a thing.

yeah, the story was really good but it kinda got underwhelming in the end like it stopped abruptly when a bigger threat was introduced. it seems like the author didn't know what to do next and just wrote the epilogue instead, but the contents were still meh. and same, i usually skip the fanfic if the oc takes up a bigger role in story or has its own POV.

good ocs are a rarity, often times found as side characters. i only read 1 fic with a good oc that was the main character but he was used as some sort of third perspective towards the other canon characters.

im not surprised that the bokuto and akaashi ship have a higher amount of fics in haikyuu… somehow this one shot fic that was written in either 2015 or 2017 became the most well known fic in the fandom in 2020 for some reason. i have been in the fandom for years now and this is a first i've experienced where haikyuu has a fic that most fans keep reacting or recommending it outside small groups or communities. the story has a basic premise but i guess the story was well written to receive that much attention? i guess a new fan just found the story and like broadcast it to twitter or tiktok.

yeah, i think this is why it's kinda great to be in the haikyuu fandom. people can ship who they want and others would be fine about it because the characters are really likeable so, in my opinion, nobody would start shipping wars or smth. i have been in the hetalia fandom before and ghad, the shipping wars were so entertaining to look from afar but also cringy to see how far people can go for their ship.

i ship several characters together in haikyuu, like four ships.

i thought bnha a/b/o dynamic fics would pass the amount haikyuu has. it seems like it especially with haikyuu ended with the manga and with a possibility of another season in the anime while bnha has yet to end anytime soon.

earlier today. i check the P5 tags on AO3 twice daily and click on the majority of the explicit m/m fics even if they aren't to my tastes, lol.

>what kind of fanfiction do you tend to gravitate towards?

one-shots and smut in the 2k to 15k range. i don't have the energy to read super long fics anymore – they just don't hold my attention like they used to. my favorite fics are usually PWPs or porn that somehow serves as a character study. i never read anything below an M rating unless a friend directly recs it to me. also, i dislike AUs.

>have you ever written fanfiction?

yes! i've only just recently gotten back into it, but it's super fun and i've met a lot of interesting people. i published around six fics last year and one so far this year. i have an ungodly amount of WIPs.

>how frequently do you read/write fan fiction?

read: daily.
write: at least five times a week, even if it's only opening a google doc and changing a sentence.

nothing is "weird" to me. most of it is fair game. today, i read a fic where the P5 protagonist was lactating, so, that's something, i guess.

I really wish writers would stop putting more or less badly drawn art or photoshops on their fics. Your 15 chapter fic doesn't need a cover page where the core characters are badly photoshopped/drawn to look like Fabio on the cover of some 80s harlequin romance novel. And it definitely doesn't need one between sex scenes.

Anons, what kind of writing style do you like to read fanfics in? I usually prefer to read fics that are direct and to the point, limited to like 3-4 paragraphs and with very little general floweriness. Like I don't want to read a huge block of text only for just basically say, "The character was jealous." There's a time and place to be descriptive and impactful, but I find typical fic authors write things like character emotions and prose really bad.

Almost every single fanfic my hipster ass read in the last year has been on LJ and Library of Moria / webarchived author websites, written by weirdo 35-50 year old women in like 2006.

And let me tell you, it’s all so fucking good. These protofujo elders don’t fuck around, the quality is almost consistently extremely high, great plots, surprisingly in character for slashfic. Plus they would all visit eachother and be friends IRL (and most seem to still be friends today). Honestly it looks like they had a shit ton of fun.

I hate 90% of AU fics.
I could understand doing an AU for characters from a slice of life sitcom or something like that… But I usually am into fandoms with a lot of sci-fi cool shit and I like those things mostly because of their cool setting.
Why would I wanna read a medieval werewolf hunting version of the story that loses like 70% of its original elements (that are essential to it's plot) and all that is left of the characters is their name? I hate it so much, if I wanted to read about a universe that different from the one I like I'd read a new book, not fanfic.
I understand wanting to have fun with the characters, but sometimes it just strays away from the source material too much. Just because it can work and look cute for one off concept illustrations, doesn't mean it for entire stories.
I guess my favorite type of fanfic is either those that happen in between real events of the canon or just slightly corrupting the original canon in a clever way or for inserting porn

Also I hate reading fanfics the size of the Les Miserables novel.
Oneshot masterrace.

In some cases AUs are less intended as stories to be read and more as writing exercises for authors. While I enjoy reading them occasionally, I also tend towards more canon-based setups, albeit usually with some serious divergences to keep me interested. I like to see how far canon can be twisted while still remaining recognizable.

I had to look up the wordcount for Les Mis: 655, 478 in the original French and yeah that's excessive. I'm totally fine with wordcounts as high as 300k though, for single fics or series, provided everything is well plotted and paced. Stories that long can easily drag.

I started reading a friends-to-enemies slowburn and I fell in love with it, thinking the characters were just awkward and couldn't come to terms with their feelings; then in chapter 30 one of them goes "I'm not cis-gender. And I'm autistic."
Bitch, where?? Where was THIS internal struggle? I read 30+ chapters and not once did this character have an inkling of inner turmoil or recognition regarding their own identity or disorder. WHAT.

No. 128701

>>128697
Do you read a lot of fic or is it just an occasional thing for you? It seems like people who dislike AUs don't consume much fic and only read it when they have a real craving for continuation of canon. That's fair enough but people who are really into fic as a hobby get bored of reading or writing the same universe all the time and most of the love is for the characters, not the setting or plot. For readers who just want self indulgent romance it's fine if it's basically an original work that borrows character's names and likeness without the rest of the canon, they just want something cute or smutty to chill out with.

I couldn't care less how a story relates to canon because I simply like to read romance, and fic is super accessible romance that features characters you already find appealing from the start. Even if it's very different from canon, even if the characters are OOC, I'll enjoy it for what it is and just picture the characters for a visual reference.

I read a spec script for What We Do in the Shadows because of the long hiatus, and reading good spec scripts feels like watching a real episode.
>what kind of fanfiction do you tend to gravitate towards
Basically whatever I wish I could watch more of that I liked on TV. When I run out of a show, I crave more of it. Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul. I am not really interested in shipping. What draws me to a fic is if it feels like I’m watching the show when I’m reading it.
>have you ever written fanfiction?
Yes. I once wrote a few chapters of an Always Sunny fic that I thought was pretty decent but then I started to overthink it and I abandoned it. I also started plotting out a post-Breaking Bad story about Jesse’s new life, but I didn’t develop it past the outline phase.
I only just recently published my first completed fanfic on AO3 and it was a crack fic shipping Rich Evans (of redlettermedia) with Julia Roberts. I don’t know if that really counts though, because it was sort of a troll fic.

The Julia Roberts Rich Evans fic I wrote on Valentine’s Day a few days ago was pretty weird. As for fics I’ve read, I’m honestly kind of a wimp. I tap out if a fic gets weird and doesn’t fit the vibe of its source material to a T.
>what fandoms tend to have the best and or worst fan fics?
I am not sure. I’m sure horrible shows have even worse fic. I can imagine a show like Big Bang Theory, How I Met Your Mother, and Family Guy having extremely cursed fic.

God it's awful when this happens. I don't know how to explain it but it feels like a betrayal or as if someone suddenly hit me with a frying pan whenever it turns out one of the main characters was trans all along and it wasn't in the tags. I deliberately blacklist trans related and some gender specific tags and it takes me minutes to blacklist them all whenever trying to find interesting stories. And when I find an interesting fic and suddenly in the middle of it there's vaginas or dicks where they don't belong without any warning or hints whatsoever feels so gross and annoying. Fucking tag that shit.

>>128672

Agreed. I mean if you're writing about rape, incest and other gross shit at least own it. None of these woke people are reading your weird torture rape fics, and if they do they were deliberately looking for them, so there's no need to sugar coat.

the y/n fandom in tumblr right now is small (although i only read bnha related y/n fics there so i can't be sure) but I was kinda surprise that it got political with the supposed aspects of y/n fics. well, i shouldn't be surprised, it's tumblr but there were long rants that was passed or shared around that y/n is not poc, fat, and trans friendly. like i don't get it, you're basically the main character. because of it, i usually ignored y/n fics where writer included in the title that the y/n is black, trans or fat because it's kinda ironic that they are really pushing fics that's inclusive to anyone by making the y/n's perspective exclusive to certain type of people.

it's a good thing that i stopped reading y/n fics.

I’m reading entirely LoTR fic (a fandom that had its heyday like 20 years ago) and since this was pre-Ao3, nobody wanted to put their fics on fanfiction.net where the overall quality was so low so people liked to put their own fic on their personal LJ
So I started with a pairing or character I liked, and then I’d read someone’s work, and they’d usually link to their favorite writers so then I’d go read that persons work, and so on, and most of it was still around which is nice. People often created entire lists of well written fic recs and author websites and promoted the shit out of each other.
I think LoTR wasn’t the easiest fandom to write for, it’s not modern so you can’t slap generic or self insert personalities and call it a day, you had to keep in mind the way they talked, the setting, Shirefic had to work with that culture, Gondor fic an entirely different one. And since Tolkien left a ton of world building, there wasn’t any reason not to.

And that concludes my field report from the past
the Fujoshit Middle Ages if you will.

to be frank some reader insert fics are indeed too specific in the other direction (like implying or even flat out mentioning y/n has pale skin for example), but i also do hate the "gender neutral" reader trend where y/n is obviously meant to be female, but the author still feels the need to appeal to the fakebois. sometimes even in smutfics they use gender neutral terms for genitals because god forbid some he/they gets offended that reader-chan has a coochie that is referred to as such

No. 128729

true but from the ones i've read, they were usually ambiguous in terms of physical appearances. unless stated otherwise from the header of the fanfic, the reader can have interpretations to how they look like in story. i guess, i have read ones that were well-written or in a sense have really followed the y/n or reader insert formula seriously.

ah, i get your point with the gender neutral reader fic, but i never bother reading y/n smutfics so i don't have a lot of an opinion to that topic, usually skimming through the scene but it's so weird not knowing how the canon character, usually male, do the deed if the only description to the sex organ of y/n is term as hole.

>people who are really into fic as a hobby get bored of reading or writing the same universe all the time and most of the love is for the characters, not the setting or plot

huh, interesting. NYART, but i read fanfic daily and hate AUs. i enjoy the characters for what they are, and that includes their canon plot and setting. remove that, and i find that the characters often become OOC – their experiences create their personality and relationships. without that, they're just two hot dudes in a writer's original setting (which is fine, but it doesn't scratch my personal itch). there's infinite possibilities for fanfic without delving into AU territory. of course, this probably depends on what fandom you're in. i'm just really tired of trying to talk about fic with people in my fandom and getting ignored for random naga AUs. like, what?

AUs are very hit or miss for me. I usually like canon divergence in the same or very similar setting to canon. I really hate historical AUs in modern or future setting media, as well as high school and college AUs overall. I do remember reading a total of one funny high school fic, but it was about grown men who canonically dropped out of school going back to finish their studies. I may or may not enjoy supernatural (or non-supernatural in media that already has supernatural elements) AUs where the setting is otherwise as accurate to canon as possible, depending on how well it's pulled off. Also don't get me started on alpha/omega shit.

>what fandoms tend to have the best and or worst fan fics?
best: currently popular anime and video games with actual humans with personalities in them (like final fantasy and SDV, versus minecraft & among us). it's rare for a tv show with real actors to have good fanfiction regularly imo/e.
worst: kpop and irl shipping in general. fandoms that have existed for way too long without new content (ex. harry potter, mlp, supernatural. yes i know they were airing up until last year but has anything new /really/ happened in supernatural since, like, 2012? has it?)

also i really overthought this stupid tier list thing and still probably listed stuff poorly. all you gotta take away from it is that i love fics where a character is in love with another from a previous life while the one theyre in love with has no recollection of it (a la kawoshin), and hate ABO with a passion. it's inescapable.

Sounds like you need to filter more strictly. Ao3 has a good search function, you can limit it to only completed stories, exclude tags like AU, exclude crossovers etc. I also make it > a certain number of kudos to avoid truly awful writing. For tags I like a lot I bookmark the search results so I can check it quickly.

I wish there was a way to filter out stories with more than, say, 20 tags. There is a definite inverse correlation between tag quantity and writing quality.

>>150094
ngl I’m a spoiled brat and wish you didn’t have to filter so heavily now. It used to be that Ao3 was where the old school BNFs backed their shit up, so you could reasonably vouch for the quality of most of the writing. I’m not against (as an example) wacky crossovers in and of themselves, but as you say there are certain things that are inversely correlated with the quality of the fic.

I used to read a ton of m/m ships back in the day, and it was partly because that's the direction most fandom went in (which became a feedback loop). Most of the ships I like now are m/f or f/f and the erotica is palatable to me now, I think it was the female element that was missing. (f/f smut can be occasionally hit or miss, though, especially with kweer shit).
I think though overall my tastes in fanfic have changed for the better. More women, lol. That, and most m/m erotica is not really realistic at all to the way gay men have sex and is written by female virgins.

No. 150124

Why would you want to read realistic gay sex? It's unrelatable to female readers and frankly, potentially very gross. I'm all for women writing a fantasy version of sex that is more palatable to their audience, it's not like they're going to participate in gay sex and force those unrealistic expectations on anyone. And as far as I'm concerned, all fanfic takes place in an AU where assholes are not part of the digestive system.

I do wish there were fewer obvious virgin writers though, experience with an actual penis would help. So many of them think cum is sticky?

I used to read m/m smut only and was disassociated from my body. Once I gained more comfort with myself and my gender I now can barely stand m/m sex scenes. Definitely it's like "why am I reading about a type of sex that doesn't involve my body nor can I relate to?" I now prefer m/f for smut. I still enjoy m/m for the plots though and relationship dynamics.

Also reconciled my discomfort with female characters and het dynamics. I realized that in fanfic it's an imaginary ideal world where I can enjoy it without harm or the effects of misogyny in my life being a concern. Especially since it's written by women, even the questionable ones are by women where everything goes as the author wants or else they wouldn't have written it. It's freeing, not to sound cheesy.

I found this absurdly bad story about this m/m ship (both characters canon males) but transbians. God, everyone is so whiny and navel-gazing and ooc in this. One half of the main couple whines about how both of them are "too old to transition now" and how they "will look like men in dresses anyway" (the other guy did canonically crossdress once and did look like the stereotypical man in a dress kek) and how he feels like a fake troon because he wants to keep his dick and physical strength intact and not even go on hormones. The other guy reassures him that it's ok because he doesn't want the dickchop or titty skittles either. For extra cringe this very minor (actually female) lesbian character shows up to congratulate them and say that one of them "has always struck her as a lesbian in a man's body" and "was not like other men". Also all the other characters the author likes are there to reaffirm how stunning and brave the two lovebirds are. I'm sure at some point the author will introduce a "transphobic" character for the two to beat the shit out of lol

True-to-canon characterization (excepting sexualities obviously), mostly vanilla. I generally prefer fics that still take place in the canon universe, like missing scenes, canon divergence, fix-its, etc.
>have you ever written fanfiction?
I've published several multi-chapter fics on Ao3, all with at least 15k words.
>how frequently do you read/write fan fiction?
I read it a couple times a week at the most. I go back and forth between writing a lot in a day and only writing one or two sentences a day.
>whats the weirdest fan fiction youve written and or read?
I've been in so many fandoms and sifted through so much garbage, it's hard to say. The weirdest fic I've enjoyed was probably a Homestuck one from years ago where all the characters were like… bird people. If you were there, you probably know the fic I'm talking about, it was really popular.
>what fandoms tend to have the best and or worst fan fics?
There's a lot of really good Stranger Things fic (more specifically Harringrove, I haven't read much fic for other pairings.) Black Sails also has some pretty solid fic.

Fanfic of real people is just creepy and horrible as a concept, but those fics tend to be awful writing-wise as well. Whenever I see fics like those in the wild by accidentally clicking on the wrong tag, they've got weird bullshit like mpreg or adult babies. Haven't actually read those fics obviously, so I can't comment on the quality of the writing.

Not a fandom, but fics that make characters troons or give them a disability they don't have in canon are cringe. They used to be really common in the Homestuck fandom back when it was popular. I swear you could fill the Library of Congress with fics where Dave Strider is trans, mute, blind, deaf, or some other ailment. To this day I blame Homestuck for the popularity of tranny headcanons; it truly was the first fandom where you saw that nonsense en-masse. Also like >>153106 said, it feels homophobic when writers (usually troons themselves) make one half of a gay pairing trans and shoehorn in a PIV sex scene. Vomit.

I just read an otherwise well written fic. But then, for some reason, the author spent an entire chapter making an oc(clearly a self-insert) talk about some absolutely autistic interest to one of the main characters. The interest in question was very obscure and you'd probably have to major in it to understand any of the references. The author could've literally just written "and then character x went to dinner with his friend oc to catch up and they talked about interest this and that" for a few paragraphs, instead of writing an entire chapter that wasn't at all important to the story.
And this isn't even the first time this has happened. Literally no one gives a shit about your irl hobbies, stop inserting it into your stories unless it's relevant to the story.

Anything with DDLG. "Aww, is baby girl upset? Here, have your binky."

>what fandoms tend to have the best and or worst fanfics?

Funny enough, the Marvel fandom (for the movies) tends to have some really good ones. Sounds silly but some writers could easily be writing for Harlequin and just getting paid to do that. This fandom tends to have writers who stick with it in the long term. There's no fakebois running around so that's nice.

Naruto has some pretty good fic writers too. The kind of fandom where the fics are well written but they tend to go unnoticed.

The Slasher fandom will have a great writer come along and then they jump fandoms. They don't have a lot of actual fic writers though. It's mostly ask blogs doing something called 'headcanon' stuff. A LOT fakebois in the fandom.

Does anyone else feel like older fics on AO3 are usually of better quality than newer fics? Like they usually have better plot and writing style etc. It's something I've personally noticed but maybe it's just the fandoms I'm in.

I think it depends on the fandom, honestly. In the ones I'm in all the old fics are mediocre to terrible, with the newer stuff being consistently pretty good if not great.

I don't like high school AUs, I don't like coffee shop AUs, I don't like chatfics, I don't like trope-filled fics. And I do think I'm better than those over the age of 18 who still do. Especially the ones who also dabble into original works, but only the kind of YA that is pretty much just lame fanfiction with the serial numbers filled AND still have the nerve to shit their pants over ~problematic content~ in serious literature like they know anything about that.

does anyone over the age of 15 like chatfics? if you filter by kudos for most major fandoms i swear to god there will be at least one in the top results and they are always bad and filled with cringe humour. like i see so many people complain about them but people are still out there writing them somehow

on a related note i find it so frustrating that if you filter by kudos/bookmarks on ao3 you can't really find well written stuff. like yes a lot of it is really good but you also get a lot of stupid stuff/mostly porn, whereas some of the best fics ive found ive stumbled onto through peoples lists and recommendations

Sometimes i filter through comments, thinking that a good fic will have more people interacting with the author, and i think is better than kudos, but not perfect.

I wait for the day ao3 lets users block tags and users permanently on profile. With its userbase i would think they would have snowflakes asking for it in order to filter triggering tags permanently.

i've thought about this aswell, i find the most popular fics to always have the most milquetoast, cringey, unrealistically happy and sappy plots - in other words what's typical for fanfiction.

on a slightly different note, i completely understand the appeal of cliché fanfiction, but personally i find it so grating to read through painfree m/m or f/f stories wherein all the side characters are shipped gay as well. it's just not realistic. that's why i prefer darker fics with unrequited love and sad endings. i just feel like anyone that ever experienced same sex attraction would know it's often a lonely and depressing experience rather than a miraculously happy one, which is often the case in any gay fanfic. i understand it's a way for a lot of people to live out their fantasies though so no hate.

I read them like crack fics. If you don't take them too seriously they can sometimes be enjoyable (like the infamous Perry the platypus x Doofenshmirtz k-pop fan twitter chat fic.) I feel that people who were heavily into homestuck seem to be the only adults who like them as a genuine source of fan content.

>>168135
Dark fics are so much better because you get to see characters grow or give into to their suffering. Like yeah fluff is nice sometimes but it's interesting to see how others interpret how a character thinks or how they would react to a situation. I just really hate how kids and brain dead adults hate dark fics so they try to police the content rather than ignore it.

Yeah, those fics where everyone turns out to be gay and all the characters are paired off with each other are really annoying, plus it's really obvious when the female characters get paired up only so they don't get in the way of the male characters' relationships.

i love ao3 tag system, and if i could block tags permanently it would be perfect, but lately it has shown me cursed content
one of my guilty pleasures is de-aging fics: 1 or more characters revert to children (body and mind) due to magic or crazy lab ray or wtv, hijinks ensue. it's cringe, but it makes cute fluffy fics for a short and light read. but the canon ao3 tag is de-aging AND age regression aka adults acting like children (due to trauma?), and little space, sometimes all ages, but sometimes explicit, and diapers.
why would tag wranglers mix an all-ages crack prompt with fetish content?

i understand what you're saying but i think it depends of the fandom. in my experience the darker/sadder fics are generally more well written and realistic than the popular and fluffy ones, but i've totally come across what you describe plenty of times in different fandoms. it depends on the writer too i think, some of them are obviously angsty teens and some have weird kinks that shine through, but i think many who write dark fics just want to put the characters in more interesting settings and situations, like >>168197 said.
>plus it's really obvious when the female characters get paired up only so they don't get in the way of the male characters' relationships.
god this is so true. it's like some can't handle letting a straight female character simply be rejected, or let a gay male character be rejected by his straight love interest.

it's very strange seeing people get assmad about problematic content in fandoms that are inherently problematic, so to speak. game of thrones comes to mind.

I know this is retarded but I'm frustrated.
I hate how the old fandoms I used to read fics are now full of uwu gender speshuls and very delicate people. There are like two extremes, but they're the same coin: found family garbage where everyone is happy and gay for some reason and very understanding and they all talk like little kids; and then there is some really weird "problematic" nasty shit that gets even the villains wrong and ooc, yet that shit still manages to be very speshul. Then you have a variety of crap to filter like surprise untagged tranny, or when your pairing is tagged in a fic but they get like 2 sentences and that's it, they're never seen again, like, why tag that shit, dude? Why tag every fucking pairing in your fucking 300k fic that has basically the entire cast of the fucking series when they get two fucking lines? I now completely ignore fics that have hundreds of characters tagged, and the author if all their insecurities are also in the tags
Navigating through fics seem so much more exhausting these days even with that tag system because people don't fucking use it right. If I see 1 more cervix penetration in a fucking m/m fic or big cock/large cock/girl cock in a fic where the main pairing should be two women I'm gonna scream.. also I hate how obvious it is when they put two women together just so they can get out of the way of the perfect superior yaoi pairing, give me a fucking break, just don't fucking put them there then!
I already exhausted the good fics of the one straight pairing I was into recently, even read weird fics with them and one where the guy was with someone that made absolutely no sense and shit was weird as hell but ok, it was nicely written even if it was too soft for me, but I got a lot less shitty stuff to go through, I believe it's cus most writers of this ship are women that aren't ashamed of liking straight shit? And maybe they're also past their 20s. Anyway, now I guess I'm back to m/m because most of the shit I consume is a sausage party but I'm tired of this crap. I wish I had new interests so I would never have to look again at my old fandoms but it's been so hard to get into new stuff

Not unlike Fallout, Yakuza is an adult oriented game series with its fair share of sexuality and violence, but not excessively so, while MLP and TTTE are both children's cartoons notorious for being turbo autism magnets. I noticed that after years of no new content fans strive away further and further from canon and rarely in a good way.
Otherwise I would just say that it's less a question about fandom and more of a question about pairings or sub-groups of fans. I personally dislike fics and fans that sissify male characters.

Fluffy stuff with a nice plot that's accurate to the canon portrayal of the characters with a hot steamy sex scene at the end as a reward after all the adventures and emotional turmoil they go through
>have you ever written fanfiction?
Tried to but ended up deleting it all because I disliked it and couldn't get it anywhere, and got over the ship I was trying to write about anyway.
>how frequently do you read/write fan fiction?
I read it when I find a ship I truly like which is kinda rare, but I never write and commit to it. Writing isn't one of my hobbies unless it's writing opinion pieces or some research for university.
>whats the weirdest fan fiction youve written and or read?
Read: some Kira Yoshikage x Diavolo American Psycho AU. Where they're both rich and go on a date then kill some guy and then bang. It's not that bad but I wasn't familiar with AP at the time and the idea of those two dating is insane and delulu af from the fans but honestly I understand the appeal and aesthetics of it. Rich mafia boss x less rich salary man who is secretly a serial killer.
Write: not really a fanfiction but an outline to one that I'll never write, where I'm trying to make a toxic friendship turn into a romantic relationship of some guys in a show I like, but I feel guilty about it because it's fucked up considering what happens in canon, but at the same time it's tempting because of their personalities and the similarities and how they parallel each other but are also polar opposites so much so that it's kind of a horseshoe theory thing and it drives me insane. It's there with tons of romance tropes used for them in the show, as if the writers are asking me to write/read about the what ifs.
>what fandoms tend to have the best and or worst fan fics?
Best: obscure old fandoms
Worst: new mainstream famdoms

The only tags of relevance for me are the series and ship tags and AU related tags because I hate AUs unless it's a canon related alternative like a what IF "villain-kun survived"-story.

The best tags in the world mean jackshit if the writing and characterization is shit so usually I check the writing first. I think you can already tell the quality of a fic or even book after a single paragraph, you can even often recognize something genuinely bad after the very first sentence.
