I love Bauhaus so much. I’m seeing them live in a few weeks. I love their more dark and gothic material, but also enjoy their songs that are full of inside jokes and meme tier shit. Each member is so unique and gorgeous in their own way. I’ve always had a massive crush on Daniel Ash. He’s a fashion icon and still has great onstage presence. I can’t wait to see them all live!

Sharing a video that is classic viewing for Depeche Mode lore. One thing I love about the 80s is how it was so unapologetically goofy. Nowadays I think a lot of bands try to do things that are weird ironically but nothing will top the genuine weirdness of the 80s.

I'm so excited for you! And I think it's great that it's the original four playing together too. That's rare to come by in a lot of long-established bands. I think they're playing in my city too, but my work hours are weird so I'm not sure I'd be able to get off in time to make it. I'd say I'm a Bauhaus casual, but I've really only listened to the first two albums and then a few singles here and there. I'm curious by what you mean about the meme tier songs though kek.

Me too. It all seemed like so much fun. Maybe I still would have been a total shut-in in the 80s, but at least I would have had enjoyed the music more. There was a crazy amount of good music that came out in those years.

I really apologize for sperging. I did my best to sum up the lore, but I probably missed a lot of stuff. Everyone else please avert your eyes.

Vince Clarke
>Founding member
>Wrote most of their lyrics and tunes in the early days
>Left after their first album Speak&Spell. I think moreso due to creative differences than any sort of ill will between any of the band members.
>Most of the lyrics he wrote for DM are kind of nonsensical and were just written to fit the tune of the song. DM members (mostly Dave kek) admitted to 1) not knowing what the songs were about and 2) being embarrassed about the weird lyrics.

Dave Gahan
>Looked like an eighth grader for the first few years and then suddenly got super hot in the mid-80s onward
>Iconic dancing (he said he initially started doing the dancing because he felt he needed to grab the audience's attention since the other members were standing behind keyboards… and look how it's evolved)
>Almost died three times and actually died once and then was resuscitated by paramedics in the 90s
>Had a taint piercing once
>Likes attention. Even said that he used to act out as a kid (would steal cars and shit) because he liked the attention it got him.

Martin Gore
>Known for being very, very shy (unless drunk)
>Submissive (obviously)
>Also known for being the most androgynous of the group. He's retroactively embarrassed by it and doesn't talk about it presently.
>Likes being in the nude. Sung the vocals for "Somebody" while completely naked
>Also apparently his dad was African-American, which isn't that relevant but I thought that was really random and surprising

Andrew Fletcher (Andy/Fletch)
>His role (and usefulness) to the group has been widely debated and discussed
>A founding member and Martin's friend from school. In the early days of the band, he would speak on Martin's behalf for a lot of things since Martin was so shy.
>Likes bananas and the dish Toast Hawaii
>The only one in the group who got married only once kek
>Struggled badly with depression, especially in the 90s (that was a rough time for all of them)
>Passed away very recently rip

Alan Wilder
>Joined the band shortly after Vince left and is arguably the one who helped DM get their iconic sound. Typically, Martin would write the lyrics and melody for the songs and then Alan would handle the sound production (with some exceptions obviously)
>Sassy
> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JVN10vhK0gc&t=231s&ab_channel=B.B (this interview is required viewing for Alan lore)
>Left DM in the mid-90s. The division of labor was getting pretty bad and he would often end up doing a lot of the work so I think he was burnt out.
>Has his own project called Recoil. He also has a website for it with an extensive q+a section and some of it is honestly pretty funny (mostly unintentional)

Additional lore (god I'm so sorry)
>Their concert at the Pasadena Rose Bowl in 1988 is regarded as one of their most iconic live shows
>They were really ambitious about trying to promote as much as possible, so in the early days they'd interview for basically any magazine or go on any program that would have them. Consequently, they have a lot of cringe videos from the early 80s like the chicken video up thread.
>Their early music videos are also the same way
>They really like to play foosball when they're on tour

Sorry nona I'm sure this was way more than you cared to learn.

I didn't know Vince was responsible for much of the first album and then left, I was wondering why that kind of sound expired in the other albums. I like the sound of the first album, not gonna lie.

No worries, I enjoyed Speak&Spell too. I listen to Tora! Tora! Tora! all the time. It's funny they also talked about how 'It's Called a Heart' is one of their least favorite songs because it's too poppy and reminiscent of their old sound, but I like that song too. To be fair, they had a lot of frustration with not being taken seriously by the press for being more naive in those early years so maybe they were just really desperate to distance themselves from that era. And I think they all had moments where they were very cute, so any member you latch on to is a good one (to my knowledge at least).

I've been lists of his comments on Cure songs and I've picked up on this pattern cause he does it so many times. I've heard over the years they have an open marriage so they sleep around with other people, perhaps that's true. Or maybe she initiated it first to cope with Robert's cheating, who knows lol. Glad to see some The Smiths appreciation. Morrissey comes across as arrogant and very opinionated sometimes, but I have to appreciate his beautiful lyrics and voice. It's a toss up between their debut and Meat Is Murder, both near perfect albums. Reel Around The Fountain and That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore both immediately come to mind when choosing my fave Smiths songs. Yes, Morrissey's lyrics are endlessly entertaining and quotable lol, but he is a well known jerk. I haven't dived into his solo discography yet, but I plan to.

Never Had No One Ever has to be their most underrated tracks, in fact it's the first Smiths song I fell in love with. I love the slightly creepy, gloomy atmosphere, Morrissey's sighs and laughs, that lullaby melody towards the end. It gets overshadowed by I Know It's Over since it plays first on the tracklist (amazing song too) but damn it needs more love

A long time ago I started reading his autobiography (and dropped for no reason in particular kek) but from what I recall he tells how as a small child he was always surrounded by his female relatives, the male ones seeming secondary in his upbring, and being a cute little boy among them, I think he was coddled, both emotional and materialistic, as much as a poor Irish immigrant family could do. In the autobiography he says something like "he learned that women could also be cruel" as a little kid when he saw news about some criminal case (if I remember well it was the Moors murders, The Smiths do have a song about it), it was something mentioned in passing but it clearly left a great impression on him about women. He has/had a idealized image of women as nurturing and loving, then this image is shattered and he goes fatalist, loses faith in humanity, I guess he fails at having a nuanced view or something. His attachment to his mother and sister might seem cute at first, but I think he sees other women as uncapable of being as good as them, like an annoying guy who always compare his wife to his mother. I hope it doesn't sound like I'm making excuses for him, just pondering and tinfoiling a bit how his views are (maybe?) different from porn addicted scrotes and their glaring misogynism.Anyway, I also think the only way to enjoy his music is if you admit he is an insufferable prick, otherwise your brain'll melt, you'll start dressing up like him and invading the stage to hug him mid performance like a retard.

I've also read his autobiography and he wrote about reading a lot of feminist theory as a teenager.
>"Books on non-sexist language flip my life for the better, and I understand feminism to be a social savior because it liberates everyone without exclusion, whereas masculinism damns itself by measuring a man’s health by the amount of sexual gratification he receives."

I reckon this could fit into your zany psychoanalytic theory, but I'm not sure where. He was also supportive of gender abolition. He spoke about it in many earlier interviews, calling himself a 'prophet for the third sex', saying he 'detests sexual segregation' and that he was sick of men and sick of women. Certainly a proto-enby of sorts. Also in his autobiography are all of his most overtly misogynistic quips - mostly about fat women, which I can only laugh at now that he has bigger breasts than mine. They're early on in the book and made in reference to his homo (or 'huma') sexuality.

The only reason I keep whiteknight-ing him itt is because he wrote 'All the Lazy Dykes', which I simply cannot imagine any misogynist writing.

Has anyone heard of 8 Beat Gag? It's a manga that ran in the 80s doing slice-of-life stories about bands (especially pretty boys like Sylvian and Robert Smith). One of the things I love about 80s music are wild looks and styles of the singers, especially female singers.

>>224922
I was already alive in the late 80s but I still yearn for some of its culture. It's not just the music, the whole mindset was more chill (despite 80s being a rather dark time here) and the nightlife was a billion times cooler than what we have now.

Internet, boomer generation getting old/dying and all that has led to nightlife and social life as a whole dying. The pubs die, even clubs die and 80s music was often associated with it so if it wasn't gone before it would die now as well. The only thing I can still do at night (I refuse to waste social time with tv series) is going to a hookah bar with friends, but even they got hit hard by covid, much more than anything else for obvious reasons.
Since modernity is flooded with shitty rules too bonfires aren't allowed anymore either, you are barely allowed to breathe these days.

Plus, 80s were full of neon shit which is cool and 80s fashions and styles were like ten billion times better than the stuff we have now IMO. I also miss subcultures. We don't have any subcultures at all anymore, not even punks. And this is a subjective issue but personally I just don't like the music that is mainstream nowadays, or anything that was mainstream since the late 90s.

A bit necro but ayrt, yes MGM music hall! Sorry to hear about Bauhaus getting cancelled, I thought for sure old man Morrissey would cancel kek. My shallow understanding of the band dynamics is that Marr and Rourke were childhood friends actually. After the band broke up, Morrissey and Marr were screwing Rourke and Joyce on royalties and went to court. Rourke settled outside of court but Joyce fought and won iirc. I think that was kind of the nail in the coffin of the Smiths ever reuniting in any capacity.

Bump for Aztec Camera as I haven’t seen them mentioned yet and I feel like they’ve got the quintessential (but underrated) 80s sound.

But I must admit that I actually do like her 80s music quite a lot. I love my alternative music like The Smiths, Siouxsie And the Banshees, Sisters of Mercy, and Talking Heads but I also have a soft spot for 80s pop and Madonna did make some fun feelgood music. Is this in reference to Madonna herself? If so, yeah I agree. I mean she was never really original to begin with as she ripped off most of her image from underground new wave singers but even if she was derivative, she did it very well at the time. She always looked like she was having a good time on stage and it was fun watching her dance. Her voice wasn't especially great but it was excusable since the instrumental work of her 80s stuff was good enough and again, the dancing was fun to watch like in vidrel.

But she really succumbed to her vanity and it just got sadder with each passing decade after the 90s. On the one hand I think it's great that she continued to do what she loves and not let people age-shame her out of making music. But on the other hand her desperation for youth instead of aging gracefully like some of her contemporaries was/is hard to watch.
