this is a meme that really needs to die, the source of this nonsense comes from one of the members of the Wu Tang Clan(and he got this from proto hotep/afro-centrist circles), and now people all around the web have been using this so called "fact" online for ages now, Jesus has been depicted as a bearded long haired swarthy/light skinned-ish dude since forever, the similarities begin and end with the hair and beard, but Cesare had a very prominent roman nose and black hair and these features aren't usually aren't found in many "white jesus" depictions

He was the bastard son of an archbishop(said archbishop would later become the pope) on account of his father's connections he was originally trained to be cardinal to serve his family from the Church, but he had no interest in that life and so he left at 19 and instead become a mercenary and later a commander of his own forces, from there he served his family in Italy and France and carved his own thiefdom in the southwest on the Italian peninsula. as stated he was the considered terror and wonder of his age, unbeatable in battle and beautiful but still every inch a warrior, he was called the beautiful and brilliant ogre
its most likely that aspects about him were exaggerated, not by his supporters(he had none after the subsequent downfall of his family and his death in an ambush) but by his enemies, to make him seem like he was a otherworldly force to cover up their own failures, but despite the exaggerations there likely was some truth to his character, cause Machiavelli was so inspired when he first met him, that he declared Cesare his Idol

It's likely Cesare had a lot of supporters, nonna. But the person in power after his dad absolutely hated their family to guts. Called them slurs and "not even Christians" (gasp) and everything. He basically did what any renaissance prince would do: just physically force people to switch loyalties from Cesare. Machiavelli even says this in his book, how the people refused to betray Cesare even when his family was losing their power.
A lot of popular legend attribute him to the unsolved mystery of his brother's murder, the popular narrative is that he killed Juan so he can be the mercenary in the family instead, but the first historical record of this "crime" came 10 years after the case and from a writer who was proven to never even be in the same city as the accident at the time. There's a lot of this hearsay and post-mortem slander in his historiography. This isn't a modern attempt to make him woke or anything. Writers from the 1920s have already talked about this as well… Cesare Borgia did nothing wrong he was a popular leader who was betrayed and ruined by pope Julius II. Sorry for the sperging i am a Cesare Borgia apologist

Samefag but forgot to add the reason why he's always described or came across as "terrorizing" italy is because his family does not give a shit about local nobles and basically took back those lands to be under control of the church. He never got into wars that much, relatively compared to other popular historical captains anyway, partly because he died so young but also because a lot of the cities basically just gave themselves to him or signed a deal under the table. His "warfare" mostly consisted of a siege, negotiating a deal, the people agreeing to it while the local nobility tries to flee or join him. Renaissance warfare overall was a lot of talking and double-dealing lol.

Hard to say which one I prefer bc it depends what criteria you want me to take into account anon. I think real Lawrence was more admirable as a human being and not as psychotic as the movie version. He would be a better husband. If you want me to also consider Peter outside of his portrayal of Lawrence, then in terms of looks Peter wins obviously but dating him irl would be too dangerous. I admire his talent, charisma, intelligence and humor but he was also a pathological drunk, a whore and he treated his wife like shit. Lol thank you anon! I've heard about this song but never actually listened to it.

Today is the 104th anniversary of the Tafas Massacre. In retaliation, based Lawrence commanded to kill like 2 thousands of rapist turks. They deserved it. In the movie, the scene made me very emotional, and in the book it was even more so (especially Lawrence seeing a dying 3 year old girl covered in blood, and a dead pregnant woman). The movie portrays it as the "he's losing it, he's about to become the Joker" moment, but let me remind you: he did nothing wrong. The turks deserved it. It was based. Not to mention, Lawrence himself was raped and tortured by the turks, so seeing this shit must've triggered his ptsd

>Nearing the end of World War I in the autumn of 1918, a retreating Ottoman Army column of roughly two thousand entered Tafas. Its commander, Shereef Bey, ordered all the people massacred, including the women and children to demoralize the British and Arab forces in pursuit of the Turkish army. The British commander leading the Arab forces, T. E. Lawrence, arrived in the area shortly after the massacre and witnessed bodies mutilated and the majority of the town in ruins. In retaliation for the massacre, Lawrence's troops attacked the withdrawing Turkish columns, and for the first time in the war Lawrence ordered his men to take no prisoners. Around 250 German and Austrian soldiers traveling with the Ottoman troops that had been captured that day were summarily executed as they were gunned down by Lawrence's enraged men with machine guns

“Everywhere were bodies,” reports historian Scott Anderson. “many hideously mutilated, girls and women obviously raped before being killed.”

"Not surprisingly, Arab leaders who come from Tafas are with the British and are shocked by the scenes of horror. One, the headman from Tafas, at the sight of his ruined village, 'gave a horrible cry' reports Lawrence, 'wrapped his head cloth around his face, put spurs to his horse, and galloped at full speed into the midst of the retiring Turkish column and fell, his self and his mare, riddled with machine gun bullets among their lance points'. Lawrence instructs his lieutenants to take no prisoners - “The best of you brings me the most Turkish dead.”

Massacre begets massacre, and it’s not clear where the cycles of killing will stop.

“What ensued over that long day of September 28th,” reports historian Anderson, “was a merciless and one-sided slaughter. “Quite quickly, the attacking Arabs separated the fleeing Turkish column of two-thousand into three isolated sections, then set to annihilating them one by one. Any Turkish or German who fell out wounded or tried to surrender was swiftly cut down.”

“Soon the pursuing Arabs were joined by villagers along the way, eager to strike against their oppressors of the past four years.”

Writes Lawrence just days after the massacres: “Then we turned our Hotchkiss [machine gun] on the prisoners that were taken, and made an end of them.”

recently I’ve been fawning over the version of Napoleon in the 1985 movie Adieu Bonaparte (picrel). I guess it’s kinda par for the course with historical crushes but he did do a lot of really bad stuff in Egypt— from his treatment of civilians to that of his own men— but it’s so weirdly sexy to me. since he was further away from the directory (french govt at the time) during the egypt campaign than he was during the italian campaign he got to have even more authority over the way things went and his emerging megalomania combined with how personally unhappy/distressed be was during a lot of the campaign is such a hot combination. for example, he went against the opinions of many of the other generals in continuing the campaign at all when so many soldiers were in poor health, and although the siege of acre failed and there were revolts in cairo, he sent back to france reports that the campaign had all been a massive success. he was also very into orientalism at the time and had fantasies about ruling an empire of the east. he would refer to his mistress in egypt (the wife of an officer who he began a relationship with after getting mad about josephine cheating on him) as cleopatra and himself as caesar. it’s all so… endearingly pathetic while also being like very powerful and brutal and I find that to be very attractive. I’m so jealous of his mistress lol, apparently he sent her some rather intense letters of the variety he sent josephine but I haven’t been able to find them

He has a great way of telling a story, and also being kinda coy and fun. At around 38 minutes in he asks the interviewer about his work, and the interviewer is kinda shy and doesn't want to talk about himself. But then after the commercial break, the interviewer tries to continue interviewing Orson, who immediately goes, "'Scuse me, I don't think we should let you weasel out of this." Made me laugh, he was a fun sport.
