Kandahar lady of rank, engaged in smoking. By James Rattray.

Kandahar is a city in Afghanistan.

>Rattray does not tell us much about the subject of this portrait, Begum Jan, other than her status as a 'lady of rank' in Kandahar. He writes: "Many of these Afghan ladies have rendered their names celebrated in history by their conjugal attachment and devotion to the cause they supported." He gives as an example Shah Shujah's favourite wife, Wafadar Begum, who was immortalised in prose by Alexander Burnes after courageously rescuing him from imprisonment by the Sikh ruler Ranjeet Singh.

>Rattray also wrote of the brave widow of Akram Khan, who was a powerful chief of Zamindawar to the south of Kandahar. When Khan was executed for refusing to tender allegiance to Shah Shuja in 1842, his widow threw off her burkha and led his tribe to battle astride her husband's horse. After a desperate struggle she was driven back. Rattray wrote: "A cause so just and a devotion so noble, merited a more successful termination."

The artist
>James Rattray (1818 – 24 October 1854) was a soldier and artist, born in Daventry, Northamptonshire, England, who died at Dorundah, in the Ranchi Division, Nagpore, India. At the time of making his notable sketches he was a 2nd Lieutenant in the 2nd Grenadiers, Bengal Army, serving in Afghanistan.
>He is the author of Scenery, Inhabitants & Costumes, of Afghaunistaun from drawings made on the spot by James Rattray. Artist: James Rattray 1818–1854, Lithographer: Robert Carrick, Published by Day & Son in 1847. A second edition was published the next year in London: by Hering & Remington, 137 Regent street, 1848.
>Each colour plate is accompanied by a lengthy explanatory texts (commentaries), delving into detailed vivid depictions of the people, their clothing, habits, occupations. Topics relating to historical and ethnohistorical interest are described, such as the forms of worship at tombs and mosques, and the imperial rituals of the Dorranis. Verbatim excerpts of some of these texts can be found on the British Library website.

Ladies Of Caubul by James Rattray

>A political mission composed of Doctor Lord and Captain Rattray (James' brother) was established at Bamiyan. This was the frontier city of Afghanistan and the first spot which could be attained by the Russians. It was also the only road by which the exiled Dost Mohammed could revisit his kingdom. The region was famed for its Buddhist statues.

>Shakar Lab ('Sugar Lips') was the favourite wife of a former governor of Bamiyan and niece by marriage to Dost Mohammed. As a great favour, Rattray was introduced to her at Kabul. Describing her as a Qizilbash belle of the first water, Rattray wrote: "Afghaun ladies exercise more control over their husbands than is usual in Eastern countries."
>Though women of the higher classes were strictly under purdah as in Hindustan, Rattray wrote that they certainly enjoyed life more than the Hindustanis. Women were seen making constant pleasure excursions into tombs, gardens and bazaars, and they threw off their veils and restraint in secluded spots. He had sometimes come upon them thus and found them strikingly handsome.

>“Pollera” - Panamanian traditional dress - literally means “a big one-piece skirt.” A form of Spanish colonial dress made sometimes between 16TH & 17TH centuries in indigenous populations of the Andes. In Panama, handmade polleras are used during festivals or celebrations. Girls and women would generally have two skirts during their lifetime: one before age 16 and the other into adulthood. A single skirt can cost anywhere from several hundred to several thousand dollars and take up to a year to create. The gold and pearl beads and tembleques provided by a skirt are generally passed down as heritages throughout the generations.

samefag but I was looking up more info and some things about the specific tribe (Ait Baamrane) the horn headpiece is from is very cool. they're famous for fighting off colonization by the Spanish. notably the women were heavily involved in fighting (a lot of the men were killed) which earned them a reputation for being fierce obviously – I read some speculation about that being the reason for the unique horn headpiece and part of what it signifies but I don't know if that's true.

also some modern trivia: apparently Madona wore a version of the headpiece along with a traditional outfit to the VMAs in 2018 and it was a whole thing

Orkney (Northern Isles of Scotland)
>The Festival of the Horse and the South Ronaldsay Ploughing Match may seem like a very odd custom to someone who doesn’t live in Orkney. On the last Saturday of August the young girls of South Ronaldsay dress in amazing horse costumes. These costumes were based on the ploughing match harness worn by heavy horses once used on Orkney farms. Nowadays the young boys meanwhile bring out miniature ploughs and compete to dig the straightest furrow on the beach at the Sand o’ Right, however in the past they dressed up as horses too. This custom once took place in many parts of Orkney but has died out everywhere else. At the Orkney Museum you can view one of these amazing horse costumes, donated by the Thomson family, up close.

>Hezhe is an ethnic group of Manchu-Tungus origin living in the reaches of the Heilongjiang River. The entire traditional economy of the Hezhe was based on fishing in the river and hunting along its tributaries. For centuries, the population of the area made clothing of fish skin because it was soft, durable, waterproof, and cold resistant. In the 20th century, when the fishing communities turned to farming and developed new modernized ways of living, fish-skin clothes started fading out of their lives.

>You Wenfeng was one of a few women in the village who could still make fish-skin clothing the way her ancestors did. The process of making fish-skin clothing, which she learned from her grandmother, is time consuming and requires skill, patience, and physical strength. She flayed the skins, scraped them with a knife, and pressed them flat for drying. When the skins were dry she sprinkled them with corn powder and mashed them in a special jaw-like wooden instrument to make them softer. She then rubbed the skins by hand to make them as flexible as cotton. Next, she cut the skins with scissors and assembled the pieces together according to the colour and scale patterns of the fish. Without drawings and from memory, she sewed the garments by hand and decorated them with traditional appliquéd patterns.

>Russia in color, a century ago - The Big Picture - Boston.com
http://archive.boston.com/bigpicture/2010/08/comments_russia_in_color_a_century_ago.html

>With images from southern and central Russia in the news lately due to extensive wildfires, I thought it would be interesting to look back in time with this extraordinary collection of color photographs taken between 1909 and 1912. In those years, photographer Sergei Mikhailovich Prokudin-Gorskii (1863-1944) undertook a photographic survey of the Russian Empire with the support of Tsar Nicholas II. He used a specialized camera to capture three black and white images in fairly quick succession, using red, green and blue filters, allowing them to later be recombined and projected with filtered lanterns to show near true color images. The high quality of the images, combined with the bright colors, make it difficult for viewers to believe that they are looking 100 years back in time - when these photographs were taken, neither the Russian Revolution nor World War I had yet begun. Collected here are a few of the hundreds of color images made available by the Library of Congress, which purchased the original glass plates back in 1948.

>There are 34 pics but I don't want to post all so here are some

Costumes of Vilamovians, a minority group living in the town of Wilamowice, Poland, who speak a highly divergent and endangered dialect of German known as Wymysiöeryś that's used only in their town.

"From left to right, a married woman in Lenten Sunday costume, a married woman in an outfit suitable for a regular Sunday, a single girl dressed for Sunday, a woman dressed in her best ready to become a Godmother, a single girl in everyday costume, a bride, and a married woman in her second best outfit dressed for a holiday. This division of dress according to the specific occasion is a sign of a living tradition, and is typical especially of Germanic costumes."

They speak Sorbian languages (Wendish, Lusatian) - closely related to Polish and Czech, divided into two main groups: Upper Sorbian and Lower Sorbian.

I love all the Polish costumes itt so much! The Cieszyn traditional dress has been posted a few times, but no one has posted a picture showing the detail on the back. The traditional costumes from this region of Poland are pretty unique for the usage of metal seen in the belt and embroidery thread. This particular dress is mine, the bodice is ~100 years old

No, I do Polish folk dance! Probably have about a dozen costumes in my closet right now.

Sorry for the awkward photo editing, but these are all the components of the cieszyn costume (minus our underskirt, a “halka”). The white blouse is also antique, it noticeably is open in front and lacks fasteners. This is because the shirt is meant to be wrapped like a robe, with the lace panel attached to the collar covering the wrapping. When the dress is put on over it,
The shirt is tucked in to the waistline, and the bodice helps keep it all in place. The next layer is the apron (green). Over the apron, we put the belt with the white part on our backs. The black ties go in front, and are tied into a large bow with two very long strands hanging down. We put the pink bow on top of our braid, and tie the pink ribbon at the end. The brooch is pinned right over our throat.

I love polish dance and costumes and am happy to share more! My director is a bit of a purist, so she can come off as overly obsessed with details/technicalities, but honestly I’m grateful. She knows so much about the finer details of costumes and dances, many groups in America, and even some in Poland, are lenient when it comes to costume/dance styling and accuracy.
