No. 311103

Sengoku Basara (戦国BASARA) is a series of video games developed and published by Capcom, and a bigger media franchise based on it, including four anime shows, an anime movie, a live action show, a magazine series, a trading card game, and numerous drama CDs, light novels, manga, and stage plays. Its story is loosely based on real events of the titular Sengoku period in the history of feudal Japan. Sengoku Basara is considered to be popular in Japan with the franchise getting good reviews and sales, winning some awards, becoming a cultural phenomenon, having the video games being cited as an example of games as art, and gaining a passionate fanbase.

Feel free to discuss anything here related to SB.

Why temporary

>drama CDs
I did not know BASARA got drama CDs… I am interested now.

Recently I watched The Last Party and Judge End on a nostalgia trip for Samurai Heroes/3 and honestly? TLP had better animation but the plot was so boring and cheesy, so it was regrettably bad. Everyone felt like a caricature of themselves and all of them felt weirdly flawless. It also commits the grave error to take away Hideyoshi's death from Ieyasu, but I know that's due to season 2 of the IG anime…
Judge End was also bad, but not as bad as I thought: the character design was horrible, the animation was disgusting, camera work was lazy and made many cool ideas for fights boring, there also were too many characters to juggle around so many ended up feeling irrelevant and uninteresting… (precisely: Magoichi, Keiji, Tsuruhime, the deal with Oda and friends… I'm sure there is more)
BUT at least all the major characters were close to their game counterparts. It had genuinely good moments with Ieyasu and Mitsunari in terms of dialogue so in my mind I'll count those as canon to the games. A shame about literally everything else. Also the ending was a cop out and it felt especially lame after Masamune and Yukimura set up Ieyasu and Mitsunari as the protagonists of their own story.

The thread shouldn't be temporary, the /m/assacre was reversed. Anyway it's funny how Sengoku Basara is a dead franchise, there's no new game or adaptation, yet Capcom is still selling more and more merchandises because of the old female fans. If you ever go to a Capcom store in Japan you're going to find a lot of merchs, mostly tsum tsum plushes of the more popular characters. I only watched the first season of the anime long ago, not knowing there was a sequel, but I really enjoyed it at the time.

They should revitalize the franchise with a port or something, there's a whole new generation of untapped yumejos waiting to get converted.

OP here, I wasn’t aware of the /m/assacre and thought this thread wouldn’t last that long which is why I labeled it as temporary, I think it should be fine though.

>>311119
Yeah I don’t get why they can’t release something new considering that there’s still merchandise for it, do they actually think that the female fans don’t play the games or something? Anyways I highly doubt we’ll ever get a 5th installment but I would love to see an anime adaptation for 4, there’s an ongoing manga spinoff featuring some of the new characters so they might base it off of that if we ever get one.

Idk why but I can believe this. Either that or they think Basara fangirls are loyal enough that they'll accept any bone thrown at them (just look at how bad and poor the last two anime were).
Capcom sucks after all.
The worst part is seeing that fujos cared about Basara more than men even when the anime was simply not a thing yet. Even in 2007/2008 they were the ones mostly making fanart and doujinshi… how is this brand loyalty not worth even some Steam ports? At least give us the ability to mod the series from 1 to 4S in a way that's easier…

The Production IG animes are so much fun and have great animation but they also irritate me a lot because of shit like that. Almost all characters except Date and Sanada clan get royally fucked over, and so does any important plot in the games, so Masamune can be main star. Especially the female characters, they get completely nerfed or do not appear at all.
I actually loved watching Gakuen Basara, it does not have that problem and feels like a weird fever dream kek.

Maybe it has more to do with the dedicated female fanbase being the only ones playing, and not being enough of an audience to bring in money. And Capcom isn't very smart with its franchises in general. I don't know much about Megaman but its fans have been complaining for years over how the series has been handled, I think the higherups have been doing crack as soon as DMC1 started development because of how much of a disaster DMC2 was and how they were ok with the Western spinoff/reboot that nobody liked, don't even get me started on Ace Attorney because I could go on and on, etc. It seems like Capcom only wants to focus on Street Fighter, DMC (sort of), Resident Evil and Monster Hunter nowadays because it's easy money for them and everything else is getting shafted.

It's such a hassle. I'm super new to the franchise, as in I got SB3 randomly for dirt cheap from some reseller and it all went downhill from there. I had made zero prior research, and nowadays even the most derelict of franchises make it to the Nintendo eShop or at least Steam, thus it didn't even occur to me that there would be absolutely ZERO ports for any of the other games. Unpleasant surprise to say the least.

I am very thankful for this thread though, I hope I can contribute to it more constructively in the future.

That's the worst fucking part of the IG anime. Kasuga in the ps2 games was implied to be more competent than Sasuke and she also saves his ass in his own story in 2.
But after the anime came and turned that around in the lamest way possible, they just made her an irrelevant jobber in the games too. I can get why in 3, BUT IN 4 there is no excuses.

Plus, I always found that in 1 and 2 her "orgasms" were less weird than her win pose in 3 and 4. But that's just me.

IG couldn't handle competent women. They really did Kasuga dirty. Two of my faves are Oichi and Matsu and they both just got to sit around on their asses in the series. Oichi is too powerful so they had to nerf her, otherwise she would have taken out both Mitsuhide and Nobunaga and that's the main character's job sigh. In the games Matsu will fight without her husband too but in the anime they made her say something like "my husband doesn't wanna fight so I won't either". Bullshit.
By the way I love the concept art for the games. Almost abstract, so neat!

That's cool anon, what got you in Basara? Which system do you use to play SB3?

I always thought the games' missions and character balance always implied Matsu is stronger and scarier than Toshi. She's the best and I remember her story in one of the PSP games was actually serious which is intriguing.

She is definintely the strongest, has animal allies, can ride a bear in battle AND is a great chef. Toshiie looks kind of incompetent next to her. But it's cute how much they are in love.
I think it was in the PSP game Battle Heroes that she fought off invading armies together with Oichi when Toshiie was gone. It was ages since I played it!

Nice pic. Keiji is such fine husbando material, I like him very much. You know a man is good if he cares for a baby monkey. Although I'm also a Mitsuhide enjoyer yes. He brings out the worst side of me and characters like Keiji bring out the best

Kek thought the omamori was a condom at first but I am the Sakon enjoyer you’re speaking of. I never gave him much thought until I played his route and now he almost has me on a chokehold. Idk I’m such a sucker for dumbass fruity guys like him his design’s kinda retarded but he’s cute at the same time. Considering his gambling habits and overall recklessness I wouldn’t call him husband material but he’d definitely make for a good boyfriend at least.

I enjoy Mitsuhide too, though not as an husbando. In general, the Oda stories were soo fun in BASARA 2. I really hope somebody translates the game and its expansion some day, it'll be all I play for two months straight.
Also yes, Keiji is IDEAL. He is so cute, soft and strong.

Also I noticed this series seems to be popular in Indonesia not sure why, like outside of Japanese fans Indonesians take 2nd place.

Anybody rememamber hwei's (lalage on tumblr) SB fanart? Her art and comics were what got me into SB and anytime I see her stuff around, it still reminds me of the good old days when the SB fandom was in full bloom. Always thought that her style melded well with the designs.

Not from what I've seen, but I assume what could have been preserved wasn't open to the public. There are a lot of paintings representing various battles and events, lots of explanations and context, and you can see some real armors. They let you try replicas of some of the helmets if you want to take a picture too, they have signs telling you which one belonged to who. There isn't a Masamune helmet to try on though, sadly. I'm sure it's not nearly as interesting for tourists who don't know or don't care about the Sengoku era but this could interesting for some of you. And the ticket for the museum is cheap. Don't go there during a heatwave like I did though you need to climb a hill with shit ton of stairs first.
