For those who don't know, usually european comics, just like manga, die when their original (and unique) writer die, but under what seems to be american comics' influence more and more get a reboot. Sometimes it's a complete tone change (Spirou), sometimes it's as close to the original as possible (Astérix). Some see it as another money grubbing scheme by greedy editors, some think of it as an occasion to get new stories

>>190428Just barging in to say you reminded me that I found out about Valerian thanks to the French/Japanese anime long ago, with the French voice acting which was pretty ok imo, although I missed some episodes on TV. I was shocked when I heard about the live action movie later and saw that Valerian was turned into a rat-faced twink and Laureline was blonde in that one, I didn't even want to see that one just for that.
When Space Dandy was announced and trailers started being posted on Youtube it also vaguely reminded me of the anime but they're actually very different since Valerian et Laureline follow a specific plot while Space Dandy is very episodic. Maybe I should check out the actual comics someday.
I read a lot of French and Belgian comics as a kid but don't remember all the details. I kept reading way more manga than anything else later because they were easier to read in the right order at the library, some American and European comics series were always borrowed by others before I could borrow them so I kinda gave up. Here's what I could recommend based on my vague memories:
>Corto Maltese. Here's my conspiracy theory: Jotaro was probably based on Corto, not just because of the character design but also because Jotaro later gets a PhD related to marine fauna>Yoko Tsuno was great, I liked the stories taking place on earth more than the ones taking place in space for some reason>read Spirou if you want, don't even touch le petit Spirou though, it might as well be unrelated, it's trash. Same shit with Titeuf, it's fucking shit for horny teenage boys with a shitty sense of humor>Lucky Luke is good, the cartoon was also pretty good>I've heard Martin Mystère is actually a comics before it was adapted into a cartoon, and in that one, Martina and Diana are love interests instead of being siblings, which explains A LOT. I never read that one, I really should just because I'm curious.>Lou was a cute about a middle school girl and her mom who write novels at first, then it turned into a boring "coming out of age" story that took itself too seriously. As a comparison, imagine if you were reading Azumanga Daioh for the funny jokes and suddenly everyone is starting to question their lives and their future and they get a serious love interest>Le collège invisible was ok, I read it in middle school. Was a bit too fanservicey sometimes, you'd sometimes think you're reading some shonen shit>Mélusine is great, read it. You have to, it's iconic.>I read the two first volumes of Freak Squeele and liked it a lot but it was so popular at the library I couldn't continue reading the next books. Maybe I should buy them someday.>A bunch of people told me to read Last Man but I'm super confused as to what it is about. It has a cartoon that has a very good reputation too, it's fairly recent.>I remember when Pink Diary was first released, people called it a "manfra", as in a French manga, which is a really embarrassing name. It was also marketed as drawn and written by the Totally Spies and Martin Mystère character designer. Big mistake because it's not the same vibe AT ALL, half of the character have severe mental issues, it's about high schoolers with love triangles and bullying but none of the funny scenes from your typical shojo manga No. 190477

There's a lot of references to fighting games and tournament anime in it with some twists. It's decent if you like action movies and cool moms. It's not to be confused with the brian k vaughan comic Y the last man
My absolutely favorite french comics is De Cape et de Crocs, which is an adventure comic in a world where Molière plays are mixed with Cyrano de Bergerac and about every french de cape et d'épée novels. The heroes are an anthropomorphized wolf and fox (and their kind rabbit companion, Eusèbe), about everyone else is human. Dialogues in it are the best you can find in the medium (poems and bons mots everywhere), which sadly makes it a nearly untranslatable series that requires extensive knowledge of french lit (roughly native french high school level) to be fully appreciated

I love capeshit as much as the next nerd but I also love that we're kicking this off w/ different comics. As long as we're talking European, let me introduce Beautiful Darkness, one of my favorite horror comics ever. Basically the Borrowers, except (not really a spoiler, it's revealed in the first ten pages, but still) the adorable little pixie people live inside and around the decaying corpse of a little girl. Gets really Lord of the Fliesish.
Not everything they've worked on is this dark, but the art team, Kerascoet (who I think are a husband and wife duo), do amazing work in general. They're such good cartoonists, but also capable of incredible painterly realism.

Definitely haven't gotten as many new titles lately in floppies, but we're hoping that'll change. Tbh floppies haven't made up most of our profit in a long time, but I'd like some new series to read. This thread is pretty dead but I'll post anyway. I just read a Swedish comic called Nattbarn by Hanna Gustavsson (I don't think there's English translation, but a short film based on it was apparently made in 2017). It's about this awkward 14-year-old girl called Iggy who listens to metal and browses shitty social media sites. I have to say it's really relatable (sadly and embarrassingly also the part that she's a huge fujo coomer and that she gets groomed by some gross old dude - that was me irl like 100%). It sent me straight back to teenage memories and I had a couple hearty keks as well.
Also I love the fact that Iggy and her friend are drawn in such a non-coomery way, it really reflects the awkwardness of being a teenager. Warms my heart.

If anything he really would have benefited from being his own character but DC and Marvel are allergic to creating new IPs that aren't connected to big names.

>>226500for her golden age version its honestly accurate characterization, the creator of Wonder Woman, William Moulton Marston was a degen moid, really into BDSM and bondage and had a poly relationship with himself, his wife and one of his students, in fact he created wonder woman specifically to "indoctrinate" children, like he believed women were superior to men, because they were "tender, submissive and peace-loving" he also wanted to expose children to his kinks
>One of the purposes of these bondage depictions was to induce eroticism in readers as a part of what he called "sex love training." Through his Wonder Woman comics, he aimed to condition readers to becoming more readily accepting of loving submission to loving authorities rather than being so assertive with their own destructive egos. >"The only hope for peace is to teach people who are full of pep and unbound force to enjoy being bound… Only when the control of self by others is more pleasant than the unbound assertion of self in human relationships can we hope for a stable, peaceful human society… Giving to others, being controlled by them, submitting to other people cannot possibly be enjoyable without a strong erotic element">Physical and mental submission appears again and again throughout Marston's comics work, with Wonder Woman and her criminal opponents frequently being tied up (or otherwise restrained), and her Amazonian sisters engaging in frequent wrestling and bondage play No. 226551

IMO he should be an ANTAGONIST they haven't earned his character progression.
Some of my other issues with big 2 is the fucking movie tie-ins and constant fucking retcons. Moon Knight right now is being DESTROYED by his crossover events and current runs. Moon Knight vs the Avengers bastardised his character and ruins his tradition of having mostly sparing crossovers. On retcons, I cant blame new fans for being intimidated by big 2, they're fucking shit shows. It's not that I think we should never retcon…but it is frustrating as fuck to watch great stories be ruined by lesser writers, character progression and deaths are always reversed, the only variable is if it'll happen in 2 weeks or 2 years.

Currently reading We only find them when they are Dead, We ride Titans, Once and Future and Kill Lock. All pretty damn good. A huge fan of We only find them when they are Dead (has everything I love, a great, artsy look, space mysticism, tons of mysteries, politics, beautiful color schemes and even a gay character and his god husbando) and Kill Lock (love dark stories about alien robots and one of them is a fucking templar that talks in German font).

I happened upon Naughty Bits by Roberta Gregory and I'm very surprised I haven't heard about it earlier. The first issue has women biting off a man's dick and shitting on his head because he was defending Crumb, and there's a very negative character (Midge) whose inner dialogue made me feel much less guilty about my everyday thoughts. This was written in the 90s-00s but basically nothing changed, huge recommendation from me

I already read 2000AD classics like Judge Dredd and Rogue Trouper on top of that. Just love how crisp and pretty the inks are, so if there is a digital HD version somewhere out there, it's a big plus too.

I've been into comics for a while, mostly non capeshit stuff. I tend to read a lot of autobiographical graphic novels and fantasy stories (IHF,SAGA,ETC). I actually started off very intimidated by western comics because I didn't know where the hell to start. I started off with Scott Pilgrim then eventually I fell way into anything by Brain Lee O'malley. Because I loved Scott Pilgrim so much I ended up finding "Snotgirl" and all of the sudden I was exploring the western side of the comic book store anytime I had the chance. Through the DCAU I am now captivated by DC lore so I've been trying to get into reading the actual comics. So I picked up and started reading the Batman and Robin floppies and Batman;City of Madness and I am so genuinely excited about getting further into these comics. I am wondering about what I should read next and if anyone else was reading the same stuff as me. Getting into western comics after avoiding them in favor of manga for so long makes me really regret it because theres so much stuff I like. I wonder how comics could be made more approachable for people who've never read them…Maybe if there was like, a shounen jump magazine but for comics?

>>327938Well, I started reading comics with IDW Transformers. All Hail Megatron was my first one. Before that, I had Scrouge McDuck comics as a 6 yo and sometimes I've got Spider Man comics from magazine stands. But my hobby started with Transformers and Star Wars EU comics. I mostly read it for the source material (duh, I liked SW and Transformers) but with time started appreciating comics as a medium.
Personally I read a lot of capeshit but I never was capeshit first reader if it makes sense. To this day I can't say I'm such an expert on Marvel or DC. Especially DC. I don't like Batman and ESPECIALLY Batfamily and it's like the biggest draw for people when it comes to DC. I think I really dig Wonder Woman but her line of comics is such a mixed bag. It's hard to be a fan of Diana cause we have like a dozen of runs that are so radically different it's almost weird.
With Marvel, I love a lot of their stuff. But I never was big fan of Spider Man or X-Men or Venom or whatever their biggest character is.
So yeah, I'm that person who is far more into comics than your average "I've read Watchemen, am I cool guys?" person but I lack more in depth knowledge of capeshit to be a true fan. Weird.
Indies are great at least. I can't see why people shit on comics when there are so much cool stuff released each week. I always have shit to read with all the back issues and new goodies coming out. Personally my favorite writers are Ed Brubaker and Jeff Lemire. Love me some crime/noir comics and Lemire is just perfect in every way. I was absolutely hooked with his Sweet Tooth and after that I read all his stuff. I actually consider him to be one of the top 3 American writers of this era of comics. Really.

Another brand new "you never saw Diana like that before!" garbage. And now with more signature King's musings about mental health! Barf.
And I absolutely hate this "manga vs comics" debate. If you want easy experience reading comics, just go with indies. Saga starts with issue one and goes straight from there. You don't need a convoluted reading order for that. But people still whine about "b-but muh mangoes!". STFU. It's all PR really. Comics were huge years ago, now they are not cool and anime is the next big thing. People would just read what is popular. It's the same with people complaining about AAA games being terrible but they will never give a good indie a chance. Why? Because all the cool kids play new Assasin's Creed and nobody plays fucking Project Zomboid even though the later is far more unique and imaginative.
So with comics people don't read them because nobody they know reads comics. Look at this very board. Nonnas would rather read some isekai villianess otome gaiden moe whatever webcomic that makes my head hurt. Don't take me wrong, I love manga. I don't dunk on people who love manga. But you get the idea.
Honestly I don't feel bad that my hobby is less popular. Maybe one day time will come and the readers will notice that American comics have a lot of great stories to tell that they were skipping for some reason. For now I just hope that the industry will stay afloat.
Also idk but I also always preferred comics more realistic art style over manga (even though some really great manga has some kick ass art).

I'm going to go to comic con and show my portfolio but I'm scared because my art has a lot of anime influence and that seems to be avoided by companies like DC and Marvel…I'm trying to find a more acceptable artstyle because DC is my dream company,I really want to work there. I feel as though the comic industry in america is run by absolute retards and it depresses me. Do you guys ever feel this way? Like we're always getting spooked with articles about the western comic market dying and about how the future of comic books is shaky and unsure…but to me it feels like the answer for western comics is very clear, like anyone with the ability to think would understand what needs to be done. I feel like I'm being driven insane, I know I'm being autistic but I was just talking to my friend about this and i am still pressed! She says the only entrance into comics is the movies and its hard to get into those now because the story has gone so far. I think live action movies are fine but have such a disgusting same-y feel with the same tired CGI, it's slowly turning people off and less people are going out of their way to see them. In my opinion comics should go the manga>anime route and attempt to mimic that pipeline, it works great for japanese comics I'm sure it'd work well for american comics too. I'm talking specifically about capeshit stuff, not indie works. Im just venting. What would you do to improve comic sales, anons?

I was at my local comic book shop and ran into "Ninja High School" and it looked so strange. >>339329Self contained stories. I'm tired of multiverse bullshit. I know comics already had that where-do-I-start-problem but I think multiverse movies just made it worse. It was fine when spiderman made an appearence in the x men, or when captain america met magneto and you know the drill, that was interesting and fun and they eventually go back to their city/universe to deal with their own problems, but now it's just too much, everyone exists in the same universe at the same time and everything happens at once, and every hero has to be impacted by whatever monster of the week is threatening the universe. It's overwhelming and even then, it still feels like it's the same stories over and over even when they try to overcomplicate things. It lost its soul, it isn't fun anymore, everything is too serious and the twists are old. And why do the writers think story end = death of the hero? I don't wanna see Peter Parker die, I just want to join an interesting adventure and see a satisfying ending.
Also they should stop the performative woke stuff in the comics, these people cancelling others on twitter are not reading comics. I'd love more gay/lesbian characters or black characters and more females but we can see the performative crap from miles, all while they ignore characters that fit the bill one way or another… "what if wally west was black and wolverine was gay and jon kent was bi"… perhaps get the black/gay/female heroes/villains that already exist and write them something new without trying to pander to a very specific demographic that doesn't care about comics? I don't want iconic characters changed but wouldn't mind to see new stories of old characters no one remembers anymore but it's a challange to these writers to give us something without making it all about the fact the character is gay/black/female, it's like they forget it's capeshit if the character is anything but a white straight man kek
Sorry for the rant, but it just makes me so angry how bad comics and capeshit movies are these days and it's the reason I don't touch superhero comics anymore, plus the art sucks and they write comics based on the movies now and it's insane to me

You’ve never seen a home shopping network or actually read/watch media from before you were born aside from looking through tv tropes and it shows

You're an insufferable braindead retard who thinks everyone who has the misfortune of coming across her is the typical caricatural zoomer, because lf course the fact I'm probably older than you is inconceivable to you. Yes, other women know pop culture, no, you're not exceptional. I had to look up like three references and two actresses in the totality of the issues, that's it. And if you think there's nothing wrong with Josh you're even more of a retard than I thought.
>>342818Oh great, another retard. As someone who spent her youth in a suburb around that time: it takes an actual fucking minute for a website to fully load and calls are fucking cancer to suffer through, let alone webcamming, not to mention shit quality. The iphones don't make much sense either, everyone whipped one out at the store when a girl walked in (you'd think that at least someone would have a flipphone considering mfers use cassettes). There is more than one problem in that comic regarding technology and consistancy. But hey apparently you're the 90s-00s expert…
>>342846Not disproven, and if anything it's you getting angry. Noting suggests it's true and nothing suggests it's false, the TV show host incident is far from the only point supporting the theory. I don't care that some braindead cows don't like my theory, especially when they're defending shipping of fucking EC boys. Being fujo is one thing, tif-tier shipping is another. Nevermind the fact that I mentionned shipping and sexuality headcanons being trash like 2 responses ago! How about actually reading posts you try to argue against?
>Also shipping is atleast shown to be done in fun and not trying to bend canon to fit what they wantThere are no words to descrine how braindead you are. No really, you just won the retard olympics, you cannot make this up. You really just acted like shipping doesn't interfere with canon (not a single one of those guys is gay or bisexual) while making up a theory, - and acknowledging it as such, and even stating it doesn't mess with the canon at all since it doesn't retcon shit - interferes with canon.
And tbh I'd rather be reeed at for making a fun theory for myself rather than say embarrassing shit like you. The lack of self-awareness lmfao, the whole point of EC is to make fun of sperg fans, not all of them
>>342865Congratulations, you're the first person with a brain who responded to me. I'm actually unsure about this one. What you say is of course true but I don't know if it's possible to separate fandom from time period. I think around 2015 there was this big boom of normalization of pop culture, it all became extremely mainstream. I'd say sooner even, like post-2010. A fan in 2000 is way different than one from 2010, and both will be extremely different from 2020-era fans (especially after sjw gendie shit became the norm). Some things never change (like the misogyny kek) but most do, so I'm not sure if we can really consider the time period to be irrelevant. Comics themselves changed a lot due to this, I mean hell, the emergance of the MCU is proof. But that's a whole discussion in itself, anyone who isn't a NLOG sperg is welcome to debate here

>if the island rejects TiMs, normal people accept it but wokies won't>if the island is transmed, it's transphobic and anti-woke so neither wokies nore normal people will accept it>if it's similar only the island just requires you to be dysphoric, same thing>if it's tucute (for the luckily unfamiliar: people who think you don't need dysphoria to be trans) then the female-only security system is obsolete since not only can anyone identify as a woman, but also…There's some paradoxes that need to be adressed. What if a person is
>bigender? (Thinks theyre both a man and a woman) Does the island sink or not?>nonbinary? What happens to the island?>an amazon who suddenly troons out? Does the island suddenly sink?I know none of these things are real. But I just wanna point out how inclusive Themyscira cannot possibly work. Let's not forget women who think they're "men in a woman's body". Does that make the island sink or nah? I have a burning urge to ask the writers about this somehow. I won't do it because it's gay but I can't be the only one who thinks it'd be funny to embarrass them like that. Is graphic novels allowed? Got recommended to read this graphic novel, and I avoided it because it had the lgbt tag. When I actually read it, it seemed like an innocent gnc boy who likes fashion paired with his seamstress but the author couldn't help but add some vague troon shit unfortunately. The funny thing is while he's not written like a lesbian larping agp, there's still way too many parallels to reality. Like him stealing a beauty pageant from natal women when he has no need for the prize as he's the fucking prince. This girl works herself to the bones to give him the most ~euphoric~ clothes he can wear. He fucking steals his mom's dress and gets no repercussion at the ending kekkk. There's even a scene where he admits being a prince has benefits, it's as if being a woman is only a costume to you that you can take off any time.

>>347061>i wear boys clothes and look like my father>that doesn't feel right because i feel like a princessi haven't read this comic but based on that quote alone it sounds like he enjoy the benefits of royalty but he doesn't wanna deal with the responsibility of ruling a kingdom. Nitpick but the wording of this is weird. Princess is a title but here it sounds like he is using princess as in the fairytale archetype. "those days i feel like a woman" or "I want to be my father's daughter" would had sounded more natural imo. I doubt someone living in a vaguely renaissance inspired monarchy would had the same association with the word princess as we do.
>it seemed like an innocent gnc boy who likes fashionI looked it up and the author desribed him as genderqueer. There wore kings and crownprinces who where mocked in court for not living up to a manly ideal. A fairytalesque story that says there are no such thing as boys hobbies and girls hobbies, and a man isn't automatically a good person just because he likes war and sex could've been cute. Instead it's "this boy isn't really a boy because he likes dresses"

She's like their personal JKR/female hitler. all over "muh husbando getting sexually assaulted!!!" … I actually read her Nightwing run to see what the big deal was and just as I expected, nothing more
problematic than your average comic. the "sexual assault" they all claim she's fetishizing and self inserting herself into is extremely tame and handled with infinitely more tact than any other SA depiction in comics. No ripped uniform at the tits or ass, no coomer shit and way more decency than any female character has ever gotten while being assaulted. If she actually wanted to fetishize Dicks assault, she'd have taken the opportunity to make the male character known for his fat ass get assraped by another man. Oh, they also hate her for calling it "noncon" instead of rape in an interview 20 years ago kek…
Fangirls have gone as far as to accuse her of changing her name to Grayson because she was so obsessed with Dick, which if true is pretty milky but I didn't find any proof of it. either way I cant bring myself to give a fuck when most comic writers are retarded womanhating neckbearded pedo scrotes, I'm grateful women get to be writers for DC at all and I hate how retarded wokies only care about muh husbando being depicted having a fat ass once or twice but never care for the downright dehumanizing misogyny and vile objectification female characters face. picrel is the vile rape depicted in her comics all fandomtards cancelled her for.

>>407732i'm glad i'm not alone with liking jean-paul, i did actually just read his miniseries from last year and i really did enjoy it. i think a superhero who is a little bit delusional and kind of a religious fanatic is pretty interesting, and while most of his backstory is stupid, cult brainwashing is pretty real and i like to watch him struggle with it. cismesija isn't my favorite artist, but jean-paul looked cute in it anyway.
i 100% agree with everything you said about dick grayson, too, and i think there is far more horrific assault scenes towards female characters than male characters. aside from dick, how many other male superheroes have been raped? apollo from wildstorm? i don't think its that big of a deal, and is it even canon anymore? he should have been raped by slade or blockbuster and then i would have taken the scene more serious, but dick fans are very weird and protective over him.

WAKE UP COMIC THREAD I WANNA SAY "FUCK YOU" TO ALAN MOORE. I was watching a Youtube vid and someone mentioned Mr. Hyde raping the Invisible Man to death from "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen". I was intrigued, so I dragged my sorry ass through those parts of the comic. (I'd never read it 'cause it looked too tryhard and proto-steampunk and almost no one nowadays can even match H.G. Wells.)
The main female character (the "leader" of this little group of weirdos) gets raped, barely even copes with it, then immediately gets paired up with this old, wrinkled faggot in picrel. (And of course she has a nearly-flawless body but the artist goes out of his way to depict the old guy with old scars, saggy ass, wrinkled like a baseball glove, etc.) Fuck Alan Moore. What an unlikeable piece of shit. Can't believe I even devoted two seconds of my time to reading this drivel.

It's absurd the amount of men that rec him while completely disregarding your tastes, nah just read the master. Master of your aborted ass. I'm sorry about this rant but it makes me angry how many times I've heard his name when getting recs from males or seeing him being mentioned when other people asks for recs, they read any shit just because other males tell them trust me bro, bro trust, bro yeah bro. Absolutely no personal taste, they all read the exact same people, the exact same comics. It's the same with Neil Gaiman, ooh all praise The Master, dude his time is gone. Fucking hell, like you just read anything because it got his name attached? And there is also that other bald edgy faggot that loves writing I-am-still-14-I-hate-woman offensively bad edgy crap, I can't for the love of me remember his name, my mind just erased everything about him and his works but the hate I feel for ever having to subject myself to one of the worst reads of my entire life still remains.
Faggotry after faggotry made me not enjoy comics anymore. It's always either violently hating women or wokely hating women. I hate these men are still held up on a pedestal.

What an embarrassing load of shit writing. Especially "League", it's got that same "this isn't how people talk"-style of dialogue writing. Alan Moore is a socipathic misogynist and I'm glad he's falling out of favor.

The thing is that i prefer Miller because his art is really nice and has something Moore's commissoned artists don't. I always found it weird how Moore was praised when he doesn't actually
make his comics, in a visual medium. Plus it makes Moore fanboys seethe when you prefer the
wrong old fart in comics ('b-but Moore's writing!' 'Moore is a cute woke old sage!')

>>420506People put him on a pedestal because of Watchmen and V for Vendetta. But that doesn't put him above criticism, and I think most people would agree that his writing peaked in the 80s. I read Fashion Beast a while back, and while it was okay, it definitely didn't have the je ne sais quoi of his stuff from the eighties. Some of the ideas were cheesy, and it's probably good that it ended up being a comic book instead of a movie (as it was originally intended.)

>>421005admittedly, i enjoyed some of his work on the authority, especially midnighter. while edgy, it never went as far as the boys, and it helped that midnighter and apollo are genuinely likable characters. i did hate his character kev, but he would just get beat up by the two gay guys at the end of each of the volumes featuring him, so i was alright with him. it was just a sort of self aware, cartoonish and weird in a way that serviced the characters, but without letting him go too far like in his other work.

>>422446late response but grant morrison came out as nonbinary not too long ago, but he's always been a crossdresser/transvestite and has been mentioning that in replies to fans since his doom patrol run, where he had a character who was a fusion between a man and woman and was referred to as "s/he" as a unique pronoun. rebis is a pretty great character despite it, but in his recent work his new trans characters and how he writes gay characters has been annoying me, or at least how he handled them in superman and the authority. terrible comic.

reread JLA: a league of one and while it is a bit of an odd story, the art is so mesmerizing and its very refreshing to see wonder woman treated as a threat, especially against batman. she always works better with mythological and fantastical stories and i love how strong she is in her morals and belief in herself. it makes me almost angry to read something with so much love put into the art and her character, only for DC to give her current title to tom king, who already said he doesn't give a fuck about her. trinity is embarrassing as well, and steve trevor needs to be put to rest.

>>424023i love greg smallwoods art, and i love how he drew all the characters faces (especially fire and ice), but kings writing really held the human target back for me. he really has a habit of ignoring past characterizations to fit his needs, which can be fine sometimes, but here i felt like he took it too far. definitely carried by the art.
>>424150>You can't name a lot of iconic stories for herto be fair, she has had a very horrible history despite DC upholding her as part of their "trinity." she was treated like a side character until george perez revitalized her in the 80s, and gods and mortals is an amazing comic book. she does not have her own editorial branch and is instead included under supermans, whose head editor eddie berganza would serially sexually assault any woman that worked there and was only just fired in 2018, and wonder woman suffered as a character in that environment as well. DC doesn't allow many artists to even draw her tall or physically imposing, and artists such as dwayne cooke had to argue with them to allow him to draw her a similar height to superman and batman (she is also fantastic in the new frontier). aside from the three i already mentioned she has plenty of incredible and well received comics and runs such as hiketeia, dead earth, historia, JLA: golden perfect arc, the hypothetical woman, manhunter, wonder woman by phil jimenez, ect.

How do you feel about her carrying a sword and shield? I know some fans hate it because it goes against the core of what they feel wonder woman is, I'm sympathetic to that
But other characters have changed as comic book era changes as well. So I don't see why not, could just be her "modern age" version I guess.

>>424546>You seem to have strong opinions on Wonder Woman.i do. i love her as a character, and i think she deserves more respect.
>How do you feel about her carrying a sword and shield?diana has been using a sword and a shield for nearly 50 years at this point, its not something new. it connects to her greek background and the amazons status as warrior women. she has used spears, battle axes, even a chainsaw at one point. i don't mind this, however, i believe that the sword and shield are being overused, and often utilized for reasons i don't agree with. recently, i feel that they use her sword as a means of separating her from batman and superman, in order to establish that she is a
warrior who is more than willing to use lethal force. geoff johns having her claim that she kills most of her rogues gallery, for instance, or the shit show that was azarello's run, has really harmed a lot of peoples perception of her and the amazons very aggressive, strike first type of fighters. there has been a big push to establish her as very warlike, and it pays no respect for her and the amazons rivalry and struggle against ares. diana is a pacifist first and foremost, and her cuffs and lasso should be treated with the same respect and iconography as batmans utility belt and batarangs, not something outdated, since every writer need to stop trying to reinvent her any chance they get, thank you.
what do you think, nonna? i know this conversation has been popular again with the reveal of the absolute wonder woman design.

>>423983I would say it kind of depends on what you're looking for.
The definitive X-Men run is Chris Claremont's, see picrel. It's very good and set the standard for all future X-Men writers. However, it's very long, kind of confusing to read in order, written in a more old-fashioned style, and a lot of '97 characters won't be introduced until you're very far in. (Rogue, Gambit, and Jubilee in particular)
The show is based on the lineup of X-Men vol. 2, so if you specifically want something close to the show, I'd start there.
Another option to start off with is New X-Men, which is more modern and generally an easier read than some of the older comics, but it can get weird sometimes and you probably won't be familiar with some of the characters.
You could probably also start with the new X-Men: Rise From the Ashes era, which just started up a few months ago so it should at least be easy to get caught up with, but I haven't had time to read those yet so I'm not sure how accessible they are. (X-Men vol. 7 and Uncanny X-Men vol. 6)
Whatever you end up reading, I hope you enjoy it, nonna!

now that absolute superman has released, i have to say i enjoyed all three of the first issues of these series, and i'm very excited for absolute martian manhunter. absolute wonder womans design is metal as fuck and i love her height, i was afraid of how they were going to meddle with her personality and backstory but she stays true to the diana i love. while i'm not the biggest fan of her obviously-inspired-by berserk sword, but i enjoyed the witchcraft aspect of her powerset, as well as her relationship with circe. baby diana was too cute as well.
absolute batman was very fun and had a campy charm to it with his shenanigans, and i always love a young bruce. he almost feels a little too similar to spiderman so far, but i'm excited to see more from him. personally, i do feel that they chickened out on him being a school shooter survivor (or were censored by editors) by building up his father being a public school teacher and him being a student of his, but i understand why they didn't do it.
finally, absolute superman releasing today was crazy timing. it definitely added a layer to the story, just make it a little hard to swallow. i like this younger, smaller version of kal-el and i'm very excited to see more of him, he is very raw and had a quiet sweetness to him i always find intriguing in male characters. not sure how i feel about his suit and the AI aspect of it, but i'll just have to wait to read more. any other nonnies reading the absolute comics? if so, what do you think?
