A thread for everything doll related.

Yeah, I was thinking this could be different from the toy collecting thread because it would focus solely on dolls - kinda like we have a plushies thread. There are so many doll lines and doll related stuff that I thought I'd give it a shot. Maybe this thread will be just me posting pics I like lol

Not my pic, but I recently found this My Friend Jenny doll at a little antique shop near me. She's so adorable, I love her sweet expression. Her torso and upper arms are made of cloth so she's very comforting to hold and reminds me of my old Holly Hobby rag dolls ♥ She's from Fisher Price, there are other dolls in the line but on the packaging she's advertised alongside a blonde doll named Mandy who I think is just adorable and am considering buying on ebay. I love when dolls have other friends in the line, like OG Barbie and Midge, I always pretend they're girlfriends.

Side note, but does anyone here collect larger dolls like these? If so, how do you display them? I just never feel like I have enough room to do it properly.

I think you could buy one or two dolls like Licca chan or this >>215841 because they're quite small and don't take much space at all. Picrel, they are almost half the size of a Barbie, and with some smart choices you can get Barbie clothes to fit them. Liccas can get a bit pricey, but you could get it second hand without breaking the bank, or you could even buy separate parts on AliExpress and make you custom one for cheaper.
Example of a link for Licca heads: https://a.aliexpress.com/_mPhpyR8
They also have a body in that listing, but here's another body that is more posable, and although a bit bigger, also fits a Licca head (but it's pricier too): https://a.aliexpress.com/_mPhpyR8

I'm parcial to clothes collecting rather than doll collecting, because I personally think it's more fun to own many clothes and a few dolls and create scenes/looks with them rather than many dolls that only have one or two fixed outfits. So for clothing, you can get them at AliExpress, local flea markets or thrift stores, toy stores that sell doll clothes, or even learn how to sew them yourself, which I highly recommend! It's a very rewarding hobby and you can put it to use for your own clothes as well. And it's cheaper: I've used old t-shirt's sleeves to make a whole t-shirt for my dolls, baby socks, left over fabric from making masks or stuff like that. You can have a lot of fabric variety! Also it's great for your hand coordination.

Either way, good luck, anon!

i dont know why mga is selling them like they are gold. Like these dolls are made in a cheap factory in china with slave labor, they should cost less than 60-80.

Mga used to sell bratz for a more affordable price and they would have huge discounts on them all the time and those dolls came with alot of accessories, now theyre money hungry.

>Barely have any articulations

>Same face mold for all
>Clothes are usually less detailed and smaller
>Mainly plastic accessories, not fabric clothing
>Faces are painted on, no lashes, no inset eyes or lashes
>Hair volume is smaller, also less crazy hair colors
>Smaller doll in general
>They don't even have feet

Yeah, those are their best sellers because they are cheap and for small kids that like the excitement of opening a thousand wrappers. I don't know why you even bothered with these tbh
They are also not very comparable to RH, but yeah, MGA will sell it for profit and they are greedy (it's a big toy company after all), it's just that RH dolls are probably costlier to make because of the reasons I gave, so they will be very expensive. 80 is too much, I agree, but well, you don't have to buy it.

you can buy recasts of them on AliExpress. Some BJD elitists don't like it cause they are bootlegs. Great for costumizing, though, especially as a beginner aliexpress.com/item/1754109358.html

These >>216758 are new dolls by Volks. They share the same face. The one on the right is Mācha and the one on the left is Yumepi. Aren't they pretty?
Please do not buy recasts, you will get a subpar item made my a shady company that indiscriminately steals from small artists. Most BJD companies are just a few people and even Volks is a small business. Fairyland the maker of Minifee is already lacking, so you will get a shitty copy of a shitty doll. If it has to be a BJD, consider purchasing dolls secondhand for a cheaper option.

Reading this thread has reminded me of my longtime dream of wanting to make a BJD of my husbando, so I decided to start researching on what kind of doll would I like it to be. I ended up deciding that I'll most probably just buy a Kid Delf since they're my favorite size and I don't really trust the cheaper BJD companies for some reason or another (or maybe it's just because I find their faces ugly even when the bodies they do are just fine) and then customize it into my husbando as I sew the wig and all of his clothes.

Doll nonas that know far more than I do, any advice for me?

The most important thing is making sure you get the doll you love the most. Ignore any advice to get a starter or a cheaper doll! It took me too many years to learn that you can really only start to enjoy the doll if it's one you love. Luts is a good company with very good quality, so it's a good choice. Have you ever sewed a wig and clothes before? If not, you might waste a lot of materials learning, so keep that in mind. There used to be many places to commission character clothes and wigs, but I think most of them have disappeared over the years. Otherwise, making things for your doll is a lot of fun! I hope you can bring your husbando to life. Also, join Den of Angels as soon as you can. The hobby is a lot more fun with friends and there is information you can only get if you ask for it.

Thank you a lot! This really makes me glad to have heard about because I'm sure I was just about to start falling into that meme.
>Luts is a good company with very good quality, so it's a good choice.
I kind of guessed so already, and I'm pretty sure that I was probably on the right since as I said on my first post, my gut feelings weren't exactly positive about the cheaper doll vendors for some reason or another.
>Have you ever sewed a wig and clothes before? If not, you might waste a lot of materials learning, so keep that in mind.
Not really, but I'm willing to learn along the way and since I don't live in the US I don't think purchasing the clothing (except for maybe the shoes) off someone else wouldn't be worth it due to price and such.
>I hope you can bring your husbando to life. Also, join Den of Angels as soon as you can. The hobby is a lot more fun with friends and there is information you can only get if you ask for it.
Thanks, nonnie. Personally the main reason why I feel like joining it is so I can know the waiting times for certain stuff to ship home and perhaps some other obscure tips I can't get off public web resources, but I could very well do so in the future!

NTA, but they already mentioned Den of Angels. It's basically a BDJ forum where people sell clothing, dolls and even offer face ups for a fee. You can questions. It isnt as bussin as it was 10 years ago, but it still gets traffic. Even if you don't like the default face up your doll comes up, you can probably commission an artist to do one for you. And a good wig helps a ton. I hope you get your dream doll, anon. Luts is a great choice.

Makes a lot of sense, I guess I will check it out soon!
>And a good wig helps a ton.
Really? I wonder if that means buying an actual wig and just styling it to look like my husbando's hairstyle would be the better option over doing everything myself, although considernig that I can't sew it probably would be worth the money in case I screw up my own wig.
>I hope you get your dream doll, anon. Luts is a great choice.
Thanks nonna, from what I've seen most people seem to agree with Luts being one of the better choices, and I also really like their aesthetic when it comes to how they make their dolls look like.

Husbando BJD anon here, I decided to shop around for parts that resemble my husbando’s appearance, and I found a wig, shoes and a clothing set. After calculating shipping and customs for all of that it turns out that I’ll be paying about 662 US dollars for it, and I wonder if I’ve practically won the lottery when it comes to BJD prices. I’ve decided that I’ll sew the accessories that I can’t get from the company as well, and after hearing some BJD stories from the internet I’m sure I’ll probably get it by next year or so since I have other, more useful bigger purchases planned for this year. Probably helps that none of the parts for my doll are limited (or so it seems).

Late but in case you still want to know. These dolls can be anywhere from about $100 to $1500 depending on the size, the company, and if they are fullset or blank. Many dolls are sold blank with no eyes, no painting, no clothes, no hair. You can customize them to your liking. $300~$600 is enough for a nice doll. You can go cheaper without settling for a recast, but it will probably be a smaller doll. >>217924 is about 15000¥comes with everything in the picture and 1/3 scale. The same doll sold blank is a little more than half of that cost.

I don't even know why they're diversity washing the main cast this hard. Monster High was always about diversity. Did they forget Clawdeen is black, that Bats Carlo is South American, Cleo obvs, plenty of Asian characters too? Or is this some excuse that POC characters shouldn't be background characters, or that these are stereotypes? It's ridiculous. I should probably take my salt to the woke cringe thread but god I just cannot get over these dumbass casting decisions

How broke is too broke? You could hybrid a doll by finding a head mold you like and a body you can tolerate that both need some TLC and save some money that way. You could also customize an action figure like a figma if you want to go even cheaper.

Anon, if you crafty/good at costumizing, I'd say you could make anything work.
If you are not, custom nendoroid dolls could be a good start if you don't mind the chibi look. You could either buy a nendo doll with the clothes the closest to what you want or you could buy the spare parts and start from the ground up.

I think it depends on your husbando but do you have an idea of your budget? If he's really your husbando, even if you have to compromise somewhere, you should make a doll that suits him well instead of just going for the cheapest option available. I'll second that figma and nendo are viable options since you're going to have to do a lot of customization either way. You could also look into Obitsu. Booth has a few sellers that make parts to customize figures and dolls, so that might help give you an idea of your options. Large manly dolls are pretty much BJD only, but Granado's Vindoll might be an option for you too.

I've also started watching a few youtubers who sew clothes for and redo the hairstyles of their dolls and I kind of want to do that too, but the doll I got has a cute hairstyle already and I don't want to undo it and not be able to put it back so I haven't delved into that yet, but maybe eventually.

I know the clothing is from Bears and they have a taobao account but I can't search further on mobile without a screen that prompts me to sign in. I was half hoping that if I were to find the listing it might have the model dolls name there. To me this either looks like a Charm doll or Luts

Here's a tweet of the doll with a few more pictures https://twitter.com/dolkstation/status/1502842109719908352 , I don't think it's LM or RD either

The only ones I follow are cocoriang on insta, but their dolls are more anthropomorphized than realistic. Theres also walloyamorring I follow on there, their dolls tend to range from more realistic to very chibi like.
Its difficult finding artists of animal bjds because many are just hobbyists who mainly collect. And I don't really care much to follow pages where the user blogs about their doll hobby I just want to see cute dolls so I don't follow. So unfortunately I don't have many recommendations.
I added the pic as an example of walloyamorrings work.

I don't really like how Abbey looks in the cartoon, so my expectations for the doll were low. I think in general, G3 suffers from slapping a monster-related graphic tee on characters (like Ghoulia and Lagoona) and calling it a day, and it's really lazy compared to the thought-out personal styles of G1. I really do miss Abbey's fur-trimmed dress and boots.

But something about this doll is just so damn appealing to me. Abbey is my favorite Monster High character. I don't know what it is, but somehow this doll just looks better than the cartoon despite it being the same design. Maybe it's her face sculpt?

No. 276964

>>276951
>G3 suffers from slapping a monster-related graphic tee on characters
nta but that's my problem with G3 too. Aside from some prints on their clothes they are bad at incorporating elements from their monster origins. Abby is a yeti and her G1 design had some elements that is associated with snow and yetis. Her G1 dress looked like it was made from the same fabric wintercoats are, her pants/leggings looked like ski underwear and she wore winter boots. She also had a lot of white fur which makes you think of a yeti. While her g3 counterpart is wearing a croptop with torn-up pants which feels very summer-y(adding snowflake prints does not automatically make an outfit seem winter-y). Her g1 design isn't practical winter wear either but there are some associations with winter wear which is great character design for a snow-themed character. While I do think her g3 outfit is cute it looks like a generic y2k outfit and if I had no prior knowledge of Monster High I wouldn't believe anyone who told me that she was based of a yeti.
Her doll is really cute though. I agree that she looks much better than the cartoon. they made her face really beautiful

The only one I could find that sort of fits your description is picrel, which is Drui by Domuya (a company that doesn't exist anymore). nta but I havent watched the embeded video yet so im jumping the gun but there are so many comments that talk about how Barbie has done so much good for the world. Barbie is a mass-produced toy made in factory that pays shit wages owned by a multi-million dollar company. I'm a doll collector so I'm not going to say it's wrong to buy dolls but I wish doll collectors would just admit that they like the designs or craftmanships of dolls instead of desperately trying to put some activist spin into a very consumerist hobby that relies on plastic.
At least BJDfags can say they support small artists since BJDs are usually made by small companies that consists of 2-5 people but they never claim that buying BJDs is totes feminist because they know it isnt

Same! I think the greyscale looks so good! The clothing isn't too bad either; usually, I'm not too fond of the clothing the rainbow/shadow high dolls wear. Speaking of not liking the clothes…

I was thinking of learning how to sew doll clothing to make my own. Rainbow high clothing can sometimes look too basic? Eitherway, I want to restyle a lot of my dolls since I can't stand their outfits most of the time.

How are your nonnies feeling about the Barbie movie doll line? I personally only like the cowgirl and pink dress one(ordered her), but I do hate their faces a little so I’m gonna just leave her in the box. Also the boy dolls are kinda ugly but I don’t really care since I don’t collect boy dolls.

Monster High nonnies, you won me over. I could not resist ordering a G3 Draculaura and Clawdeen. I don't care for their default clothing options that much so maybe I will make them some custom clothes.
I never had Monster Highs as a kid, only very generic non articulated Barbies, so I'm always a little surprised that they make such interesting dolls for kids nowadays.

Figures some neckbeard mangaka in Japan found a way to integrate an incredibly niche, predominantly female hobby into his retarded wank fantasy where a manic pixie dream Stacy dates a loser NEET. I hate men, they need to get a grip and stop chasing after the idea of the hottest woman they know dropping everything to be some fat ugly geek's life coach and bangmaid. What mold is this?

No. 312936

I've never done any doll repainting or anything of the sort, but I'm curious is there's any point in repainting and reforming a doll's face without mr super clear? Or an alternative, tho from what I read there aren't many, but I've seen people use a liquitex product. There's this moid who has appeared in my local news because he has a gazillion dolls and restores dolls people send him, but I noticed he uses nothing as a base and nothing as a finishing. How short lived would a repaint like this be?

No. 313043

>>312936
Repainting without using something for 'tooth' (like msc or liquidtex) is pretty difficult as plastic dolls and especially playline dolls won't 'hold' paint or build color very well because of the texture of the plastic. It's too smooth.

If you do complete a repaint w/o msc or some kind of primer/fixative, you're definitely going to see flaking and damage. Maybe not immediately but msc helps preserve the paint/watercolor pencils/whatever so it won't get damaged. Not only that, if you don't put a protective coat down before you paint, you run a much higher risk of permanently staining the doll because the plastic will absorb the pigments you use. So good luck to that guy ever redoing or removing facepaint lol

Yes, exactly. It's up to each artist, but most use it as a "signature" or to make the doll even more unique by drawing something that goes with the theme of the doll.
Personally I don't do it on mine because I like them to be more "realistic" for posing and such, but it's a pretty cute detail that adds value to them.

Miniature-related post, I think Re-ment is kinda lackluster nowadays. Some are cute though it depends on the entire set and very much prefer originals than collabs. Pre-2010 has some really great ones but it's sad that they're long discontinued and are being sold at a crazy high price. Wished I could've gotten these when they were around.
