sorry but I wasn't paying attention at the time, what exactly happened? I looked it up and people are saying she deleted a bunch of the dungeon meshi extra stuff when it got published in the Daydream Hour doodle books, but maybe not all of it made it to the books? Did she just delete illustrations on her current blog https://nisiryu.blogspot.com/ or was there another one?

Marcille's a lonely, sheltered, bookish girl growing up at a radically different rate than the rest of the people in either sides of her lineage. Pretty relatable to lots of people She's also a yume/romance brainrot girl hehe. As a filthy LaiMar shipper here though, both characters have plenty of similarities and passion for learning especially in relation to the dungeon. By the end of the story, Laios develops respect and admiration (platonic or otherwise) for Marcille while fundamentally disagreeing with her views about making the life expectancies of race the same, he still respects her fears enough that the lion knew how to tempt him to want to save her from her loneliness, by making her able to have children and even make him (and Farlyn?) live as long as she dies to accompany her. See the twitch of hesitation in picrel. Do I think Laios likes her? He canonically admires her as a skilled and knowledgeable teammate and then some. Will he ever confess? Probably never but he will in my brain-fic. And I think Farcille have a very similar character dynamic to LaiMar. But I'm just a straight woman who likes straight ships.

Don't forget that the succubus chapter highlighted a few things: That he has deep seated hatred for humans, and it manifests in wanting to be a monster, turning his friends into a monster. And that it specifically sexually involves Marcille giving him a kiss (and a bite) period. I imagine even somewhat getting over the hurdle of hating humans is one thing but he's too autistic to hash out his feelings. Though, the winged lion's curse shows being with Marcille is not his first greatest wish which truthfully is pretty kek. It's pretty clear to me the author doesn't want them to be canon despite all this of course, it adds to their dynamic that there's things left unsaid on top of a very strong partnership between them.

I hate to be that person (in my defense, I'm a lesbian, so I'm allowed this opinion at least once) but Marcille and Falin have genuinely never registered to me as more than friends. I'm manga-only if that makes any difference but I truly never really saw much impetus for shipping in the main party? Like yeah Marcille sticks her neck out for Falin a lot but she goes out of her way to care for Izutsumi as well, which made me feel like it was just in her nature to be nurturing. I personally read her as a straight woman with comically bad taste in men, but I understand the arguments for her being bi.
I guess Shuro and Falin could be considered an in-party pairing, but even there I never really got the sense that it was a particularly enthusiastically reciprocated thing from Falin.
Although of all the ships that have come to my attention with the anime's fandom signal boosting, Kabru and Laios have got to be the most "… What? Where are you people getting this?" kek

Kui's writing was so refreshing, not free from anime trope pitfalls. lc will argue about that until the sun explodes. But I loved how much depth there is in each characters, there's subtext you can scratch beneath the surface from most of them. It actually disappointed me a bit how most of the depth from the main cast is on Laios and Marcille. Maybe Chilchuk. Falin and Senshi hardly got as much characterization despite the latter having an arc to himself. I think the author definitely has favorites.

Anyway I go insane thinking about how it from a lighthearted food DnD story becomes a batshit insane story about the nature of desire and consumption.

No. 367112

I think Falin and Senshi are just innately characters that didn't have as contortion within their spirits to explore, the way Laios and Marcille did and were exploited by the demon for But I don't like them any less as characters for it– it shows a nice amount of realism, and Senshi was still my fav by the end of the manga.
If we could have gotten a liiiitle more time spent exploring the depth of a character, it would have been Izutsumi for me, but there too I think she's really just not the introspective type. Seeing a spinoff of her eventually would be a delight, though. Her dedicated chapter in the end showed a lot of promise for the person she might mature into.

Is it just me or I quickly grew out of the main party and find the side characters more interesting over time? (don't get me wrong I like them and they're still much better written than many anime slop characters)?
It also bugs me that while Mithrun said the demon prefers uncommon/unique wishes, the demon seemingly grant the most milquetoast wishes possible in the story (from jealous Mithrun, Marcille IMHO boring backstory, even I find Thistle's wish plus his yandere Delgal obsession average, too. The admittedly more interesting one was from our turbo autist but even it's still meh). I'm sure out of so many people there must be more interesting wishes. Though probably those four were the only people ventured deep enough to find the demon
That aside, I find these two really cute! Micky needs to pay Kuro better and give all the food he wants.

Following the #dungeonmeshi tag on tumblr was a mistake. When it's not transfem headcanons for Falin and weird chimera thirstposting, it's shit-flinging textposts about muh autism and muh microagressions. The big debate right now is between people who woobify Laios for being 'autism-coded' and people who think Laios was being racist towards Shuro, and then people who think that hating Shuro for punching Laios makes someone a racist. I CBA to track down the exact manga page, but in the scene where Laios first meets Shuro in the tavern he asks him a bunch of obnoxious questions like
>You have a strange appearance, where are you from?
>Are there any monsters [in the Eastern Archipelago]?
>What kind are they?
>etc

It's played for laughs, i.e. Laios being overzealous about monsters and Shuro looking like his lifeforce is draining away, but a certain part of the fandom reads it as Laios committing microagressions against Shuro the fantasy PoC.

No. 374420

someone should tell them the author is clearly using the scene as an outlet to express her lived experience of being objectified and microagressed against for her japanese appearance and heritage and therefore it is an extremely valid scene for her to write and they are actually racist for silencing a poc victim of racism just trying to tell her story.

Sperg ahead:
I've seen this and I think it just shows the retarded state of morality online nowadays. People are having quivering meltdowns saying Laios isn't racist he's just autistic and it's like. He's autistic and his inability to read the room does contribute to him being inadverdently racist to Shuro initially. It's not the end of the world kek
But accepting that he's this earth-shatteringly bad thing in their minds that they likely already are (because humans innately hold biases LBR we're all a little racist) is unacceptable to them so it turns into this huge retarded debate when it doesn't need to be.
Ryoko Kui does indeed present a colorful and well-thought out world in dunmesh that comes with a lot of the warts of the real world and I think that's good but the queasy black and white mentality of many online spaces leads to the most annoying fucking commentary on the show.
This annoys me with Chilchuck too, so many newcomer fans have reduced him to a)divorced and b)revolutionary union man and it's cool that these characters zing their epic buzzwords but there's an absolute death of nuance or productive discussion. Instead they just circuitously ruminate on the same feel-good points with the bare minimum amount of memeable character flaw ad nauseum.

No. 374489

He's diet racist to Shuro by being obnoxious about his exotic origin or whatever when they first meet but it's about as bad as Senshi thinking Chilchuck is a child, aka no biggie

Exactly. You could make the point that all the elves are infantilizing a POC war orphan because they're amazed at how fast Kabru grew and still treat him like a kid. Even Kabru asks Lin if she knows anything about Shuro since they're both Asian, and he's known her since they were kids. Their world isn't as connected as ours, of course they're going to ask retarded questions about people and places too far away for them to know about. If these retarded pearl-clutchers left their online safe spaces for ten minutes they'd understand that none of this bullshit matters.

I looked at the dungeon meshi tag on tumblr for the first time today and I can't believe how many people ship Laois with Kabru. What an ugly ship. They have negative chemistry and very little in-world opportunity to have built any relationship, not to mention Laois doesn't care that Kabru exists. I swear fandom has no taste anymore. At best, you could make a good yandere stalker slash fic out of their dynamic but that's it. The obvious choice is Laois and Shuro if you have to do a BL ship.

Laios isn't just socially awkward. He's pathologically incapable of understanding a perspective that isn't his own. And the fact that those things are called out by the narrative doesn't contratict any of this. Believe it or not but autistic people are able to improve their social skills.

it isn't unique to autism but laios is an extreme example, i typically think that "this character is autistic" takes have little to no substance, but in his case, i fully understand why everyone thought it was purposeful. i still don't think the interview fully discredits the possibility, as she gave answers as safe as possible without any substance, imo. no one is insisting that people who aren't autistic can't share the same traits, but i don't think its offensive to admit that they're sped traits.

Sure, I cringe at people unironically calling him autist because it really flattens the depth and purpose of his character. He finds monsters interesting not because it's his special interest as an autist, it's because he got neglected as a kid and got pitted against Falin who was more well liked, and didn't resent adults nearly as much as he does despite being ostracized even more so after her affinity for magic. He's a huge chuunibyou (larps as a wolf/monster in so many opportunities across the manga.) And quite lucky and privileged to have inherited his dad's position but inconsiderately trampled on both that AND becoming a knight just to be closer to his dream of becoming an adventurer/seeing monsters which is a risky job. He's a complex and grounded character with very human desires and goals. To call him autist as if neurotypicals don't have that complexity is silly to me. Plus I don't see the need for that label when he's able-bodied and can socially and physically function well enough (at the very least he understands not to harass or confess to women, at Chill's orders for example) in dungeon meshi society if a bit too passionate about something, kek.

To me Laios's monster interest as well as lack of human interest is closer to that of someone too privileged (and a little insensitive) to understand his position in the world, busies himself in books because no one understands him but also doesn't make the effort to understand his dad and the complexity of his role, which ties in on how tragic it is that he never got to repair his relationship with his dad despite the ending, I like to think he finally understood his father after years of becoming a king.

I hate that Dungeon Meshi is cursed with being popular yet I can't have a decent conversation regarding the subtleties in Kui's writing because everyone's too busy misrepresenting it. Changing topic then, I'm very much affected by the implications of the alternate universe where Laios was born a woman and couldn't even leave the village and ends up having an heir because he's not male and can't choose his path, nor magical and talented like Falin who to get in a magic school. I bet Falin wouldn't even go to a dungeon because she loves being with him/her so much more than deepening her knowledge of magic.

If you're willing to bypass the language barrier, you may have better luck having meaningful conversations in the Japanese fandom. Comparing the fanart posted on pixiv to those posted on tumblr, the difference is striking. Not all western artists are bad but they still mostly draw shipping and funny memes. I've found this to be the case in almost all the fandoms I've been in. So much of the western fandom now is just redrawing memes, character AI interactions, making ocs, fanfiction, snide remarks about how they could write it better, and shipping.
Once I tried to find reactions to some chapter update of an ongoing series, anything I could find in English was just complaining about shipping and writing about how the male character was fuckable.
It wasn't until I started looking at jap comments that I found out an important character died.

Laios daddy issues mostly stem from the fact that he doesn't realize his father is literally him. Issues connecting with the people around him, being perceived as cold and uncaring (it happens to Laios several times, each member of the cast calls him that at least once, even Senshi. Also notice how Laios basically never complains about pain or anything during the show. He literally never cries), seems to hate responsibilities but still forced to have them. This page sealed the deal for me. Laios is just a version of his dad who had people who loved him more and had less reasons to retreat into his shell. I love how easily and elegantly she manages to create tearjerkers without being overdramatic

Same anon, I really love how she handles the emotionality and detail in her characters. Personally, I see Laios' comment about Falin's death facilitating positive things as part of that– sure, it was tactless to say out loud, but when you lose someone close to you, sometimes you have thoughts like that, which you know they'd understand or find funny but others would find cold or callous. I dunno, but it always rubbed me the wrong way that people would use that scene as autism evidence, when it really just cements how important and close to each other Falin and Laios were (and also tbh fits tonally with the fantasy setting's more blasé outlook on death and resurrection within the dungeon, and is one of many early comments that gives a sense of certainty to Falin's return that makes what actually happens have more dramatic impact).

I saw this scene as autism evidences too but that's a much more heartfelt way to look at it. Laios probably always made this kind of comments and it was never a big deal because falin was there to back him up. This episode made me think that falin served as a kind of mediator between laios and the rest of the group. And without her, it becomes apparent that the rest aren't very tolerant of his antics. When falin had found a lifelong friend in marcille, had good relationships with most of the party and was still communicating with her parents, laios didn't have any truly meaningful relationships aside from her. This page supports my point I think. Falin love laios as much as he love her but laios need her a lot more than she needs him. I think laios kinda needed to have falin away from him as to stop relying on her so much. You can see how his relationships among the group improves dramatically over the course of the story. But maybe I have a bit too infantilized vision of laios. You tell me.

I like this. Laios straight up says she is the strongest one of the two, mentally. He becomes a truly grown man only at the end of the manga. I think it's interesting that Ryoko Kui drew him as majestic and fabulous during his crowning. He even manage to give a charming "speech" that makes everyone happy, while still remaining true to himself and his personality, instead of saying something cringe and dumb for a gag like he used to, which is something I find interesting. He really did grow, improve and showed his true self to others only after Falin died and he stopped using her as a crutch, and the path to lead to his growth what the same that lead to her rescue and revival.

One of the things I love about Dungeon Meshi is the messages it gives. It's never preachy, boring or overdramtic, it's not some super weird philosophy or social message, yes it's beautifully bittersweet, heartwarming and encouraging

I almost teared up with this page even if it's so silly, just because it was in the context of Marcille's darkest hour and how it alleviated her fears through her friends encouraging her, plus the callback to the silly Senshi moment in the first chapters of the manga.

All the messages are always like this. Things as simple as "even the scraps of vegetables are useful" or "If you want to be free you can't always eat whatever you want"

There are so many hints of how similar they are it's crazy.
The fact that they obviously love animals, possibly more than people, yet are still pragmatic about them and come off as cold. For examlle his dad spent as much time as he could hunting with his dogs and those hunting dogs were the only thing that gave them an emotional connection. When his dad suggests to euthanise Rag because he wouldn't be a good hunting dog, being a mutt, it's easy to see it as an antiquated cruel boomer scrote moment and Laios and Falin protest until he relents, but then during the story Laios does the same exact thing regarding Anne and other "friendly" monsters. It's like he forces himself to be cruel and cold, and I believe Laios dad is the same.

Even pic related, the dog respect chart, it made me realize something about my real life. My dad was the one who fed our house dog almost every day, and the dog always did everything he said and never did things like jump on top off him, take things out of his hands, pull the leash etc (which she always did to me lol, she never bit anyone but she clearly had no issue being a rascal towards me).
She also never did anything like that towards my brother despite him doing nothing special at all, and she always obeyed him. I realized through Dungeon Meshi that it was because my dad and by brother are so similar in personality and mannerism she most likely felt he ought to be respected as well.

People like to call Ryoko Kui autistic but she has an incredible understanding of people and relationship, like she can read through them.
Maybe Kabru is based on her lel

ayrt, and just want to say that there's nothing wrong with seeing it as autism evidence, I should have specified that it's seeing it as only an autistic thing that bothers me, not the interpretation itself sorry. I'm just tired of things anyone might experience or feel being cordoned off as uniquely felt by x or y group.

Agree with what you said about Laios too– in a way, the whole story is a result of 'what if we removed the character that is the glue of this group', as Falin's absence allows everyone to grow and engage in things they otherwise might not have if the event leading to and her death never happened. It's very bittersweet, but her death resulted in all of the main cast becoming closer or even just meeting one another. A good example is Marcille and Laios, who are clearly familiar with each other at the start of the story, but in a distant sort of way that's a little prickly, then they come to understand and better rely on each other more once they don't have Falin who, bless her, was a 'barrier' to that by being such a good mediator.

THIS is what I think about tbh. As a tangent, I think a lot of autism label is so useless when the said autist person can function and adjust well in a society and I feel like it should be reserved for non verbal or non functional autist who do need the attention, resources and help. I myself used "autist" in my posts in the imageboard meme definition. But it's like Kui read through my privileged life and predicted how people like me never made the connection to my own parents because I'm too busy navel-gazing and wishing the world would burn already. Likewise I also do want to point out how Marcille has very similar broad strokes in character arc to Laios. I caught up with manga as the anime was about to air and I had no idea Marcille was going to be the final villain sort of. It also surprised me how well Kui tied the casual monster eating spec-fic of the earlier arcs to the larger set piece ending. I believe they're all tied down by desires and compromises. Both Marcille and Laios lived privileged but sheltered and isolated childhoods. Marcille was gifted with magic, and Laios had his monster fascination. Due to their isolation, they both developed their idea of a utopia that we find out doesn't really apply well in reality. Their worlds broaden with the colorful cast they meet, each with their own goals and ideals. I love the bold choice of making Marcille the successor of the dungeon, probably because Laios made the final push accidentally, but still makes sense in character, before he realizes what we want isn't always the best. AHHH I love it when characters parallel arcs with each other, I love you Kui!!!
