There were less ways to make money and skullduggery wasn't as OP so the world was actually dangerous, even if you get the chastity belt in the beginning. Since there were limited scenes and the romances didn't go that far, you were forced into bad and inescapable situations a lot more and it really made you feel trapped, like how the character was trapped. I loved it lol I was recovering from SA at the time and it was pretty cathartic. That was the first time I played an h game where, when your character is traumatized from assault, they would have moments where they could no longer fight back. They could go numb sitting encounters and you couldn't do any actions to escape. You could be trying to placate an attacker but your character gets
triggered and lashes out instead and pisses them off, so they go from calm to violently angry. I loved that, as messed up as it might sound, that a fucking lolisho rape game took the affects of sexual assault more seriously than my therapist did lol. Those elements were a huge part of why we (early players and contributors) loved the game.
The LIs were always a planned part of the game, but they were there to facilitate more ways to traumatize or soothe the PC, rather than these fleshed out characters you get to date and romance. Eden was for control/Stockholm syndrome. The wolves were for the feral fuckers, Whitney for the humiliation do-Ms, Robin was for the crossdressers and alternatively for people who just wanted a break from Rapecheshire. The LIs were as much vehicles as much as their own things.
But the sprites and the fact that it actually had at to do made it a hit with normies and the started to add more dating sim elements. Then he found himself surrounded by more normie contributors from Twitter and Tumblr and took out all references to age from the game, then lied to this new community in his groomercord that the game only had "some ageplay that was never implemented in the official builds of the game" to keep the money train going and basically told dgg to fuck ourselves. Now they're his focus and contributors are the ones making most of the game, and normies love the dating sim parts more than the exploration of trauma and abuse. So that's where the games going… Wasting all his effort on a pregnancy system.
I still play it and I'm glad it's still around but I'm glad I got to enjoy what it used to be before it became Tumblr. I can find some screenshots of our infights/spergouts from the /dgg/ archives if you'd like, but that's the gist of it. A lot of d game devs and regulars still feel a little betrayed, reminds me of the Nyanners situation.

Course of Temptation is kinda fun, but I think there could be many improvements. Like others said, it's a bit grindy. Picrel has this much frienship, but he still doesn't agree to hangout with me and doesn't like my texts. We aren't even considered friends, he's my annoyed acquaintance. It took being naked in front of him to even get on his good side. But there's also not much to do right now. Especially in town. Like it'd be nice if there was more to do at the bar, or the QuickieBurger. Maybe there is more to do but because of how grindy the skills are, I can't access it yet? The game would also benefit greatly from sprites and animations. Like there's a bunch of clothing shops but no character sprite to look at so why bother with so many clothes? Now, I do like that I'm not at threat of rape and torture every two seconds like DoL, but I'd like at least some unsecurity. Currently I only ever get harassed on the bus, but nothing ever happens because I can easily ignore it. Also the characters I feel need some more events to force players to interact with them. Like being forced to interact with the star quarterback if you join the football team is a great way to incorporate some of that interaction. Also it'd be nice if the persistent npcs always appeared as an option to talk in the game itself instead of having to check the people tab to see if they're nearby to chat. There's probably more I'm forgetting, but I still had fun. I'm excited to see where the game goes from here.

They have all the same interactions that female characters do (except for proper M/M sex, which is just a fade-to-black in vanilla, but this has been modded in for a long while if you need it. Their customization is slightly more limited than females in vanilla, but if you can get over the hurdle of learning AA2Unlimited then you can do just about anything. You can check out BepisDB for a good idea of what kind of guys you can make.

The NPCs are more fleshed out in theory with names, individual likes and dislikes, and customizable on the fly appearances (which is great and the whole text-based appearance selection/system is one of the highlights with how detailed and customizable you can get) but are also incredibly generic. I think it's because there's an expectation tied to giving an NPC a name that's inherited from DoL and other games like it. Even the 'special' characters like your best friend or your roommate are super bland and uninteresting past their very basic and unfinished storylines. Say what you will about Kylar and Sydney and the rest of the cuck crew but at least you've got quite a bit of content there for your first playthrough or so.
CoT tries to hide its lack of content behind the super slow skill and relationship leveling (though it's thankfully adjustable) but it just makes everything feel very dead and lifeless as you struggle to progress and there's no reward because there's actually very little beyond the first level or so in most non sex skills. It's also a chore to get to know or interact with most NPCs because there's about a million of them all with the same handful of names, dressed in indistinguishable clown gear, who kind of flit back and forth between locations. You don't even usually get to know their names in most interactions. I've played much longer than any sane person has (into the month of December equivalent) and still am missing a bunch of names so most of who my character encounters are just descriptors like "geeky full-figured college boy" or "somewhat tall blonde mid-thirties person" (for a gendie). It's very hard to single out a character to build a relationship with because they're all just faces in a crowd, and they all sound exactly the same in dialogue.

Ended up digging and found out that ILLGAMES (Illusion's unofficial successor) apparently released a "successor" last year called Summer Vacation Scramble. Looking at the trailer on their website, it actually seems to be pretty good and even though there are only 2 guys, every love interest looks customizable. There's a localization patch in the notes so I think there is an english/overseas release.
It still has classic H glowstick censorship and is obviously primarily made for a male audience, but you can still have a feMC and presumably any love interests (might still have M/M censored since they didn't show it in the trailer but did show F/F). I think it'd be bigger if they kept the original name and marketed it as a comeback with new features but the new studio doesn't want to be seen as/connected to Illusion for some reason.
