Can we have a comfy movie thread where we discuss recent movies that we watched and rate them? We can also ask for recommendations and talk about anything movie related like theories, analysis, impressions, etc.
Animated movies, old Hollywood movies, foreign movies, movies you like and think no one has seen, so movies of any kind are welcome!

I'll start with Loving Vincent that was released last year. I just watched it yesterday and I loved it.
What makes the movie stand out is that each frame is made of an actual oil painting inspired by Van Gogh. Apparently, more than 100 artists worked on the movie making these oil paintings. You can see the immense work that was put into this, bringing to life Van Gogh's works. The soundtrack is composed by Clint Mansell, the same who did the OST for Moon and Fountain. I'd definitely recommend you watch it.

I rewatched Matilda recently for the first time in a while. I usually hate when films deviate from the original books too much, but I just love the film so much, it all just worked.

The bit at the very end where Matilda and Miss Honey are rollerblading, having picnics, and playing around makes me well up like nothing else. It's so perfect and optimistic. Even in the darker moments through the film, there's this incredible hope and joy that really moves me. It's a real comfort watch.

I loved that movie as a kid! It was my comfort movie. And I completely agree, that scene at the end really warms my heart like nothing else.
Before the Harry Potter mania and kids wishing they received a letter from Hogwarts, I remember wanting to have telekinetic powers because of Matilda so much that I would occasionally stare at a spoon hoping it would bend. lel silly me it never happened ;_;

On a side note, I always wished to have a piece of that chocolate cake. It looks so yummy.

I've watched a few recently but nothing really stands out.

I watched annihilation which was pretty weird especially the last 3rd.

For comfy films i'd say stuff like
>our idiot brother
>adventure land
>into the wild

>Animated movies

I've gotten back into ghibli again so
>howls moving castle
>valley of the wind
>porco rosso

I don't have any old or foreign but some past films had good soundtracks

>trainspotting 2

>the man from uncle
>baby driver
>hanna
>fright night remake

Last year I got mildly obsessed with watching movies and watched a total of 260 films (not including short films) over the course of about six months. I'm going through my watchlog from that time, so I'll post some of the standouts as recommendations. Also for the record I was a miserable fuck all of last year so most of what I watched was horror or depressing in some way.

1. GOOD TIME (2017) dir. Safdie brothers (USA - crime/thriller/drama)
>After a heist goes awry, a bank robber tries to free his brother from Rikers Island.
very fun fast-paced film.

2. CURE (1997) dir. Kiyoshi Kurosawa (JAP - psych. thriller/horror)
>A wave of gruesome murders is sweeping Tokyo. The only connection is a bloody X carved into the neck of each of the victims. In each case, the murderer is found near the victim and remembers nothing of the crime. Detective Takabe and psychologist Sakuma are called in to figure out the connection, but their investigation goes nowhere…
less J-horror and more of a crime thriller. More scary in a discomforting/unsettling way than a straight-up horrifying way.

3. THE THING (1982) dir. John Carpenter (USA - sci-fi/horror)
>Scientists in the Antarctic are confronted by a shape-shifting alien that assumes the appearance of the people it kills.
Worth all the hype. Uses practical effects, paranoia, and isolation to build atmosphere.

4. SPOORLOOS/THE VANISHING (1988) dir. George Sluizer (DUTCH - thriller)
>Rex and Saskia's holiday in France is cut short when Saskia disappears. Three years later, Rex, still obsessed with finding her, is approached by a chemistry teacher who suggests he knows what happened.
Very creepy and uncomfy. Depicts the horror that's more realistic and evil than thrilling.

5. CERTIFIED COPY (2010) dir. Abbas Kiarostami (INT'L - art film)
>In Tuscany to promote his latest book, a middle-aged English writer meets a French woman who leads him to the village of Lucignano.
Unique and enigmatic film about authenticity and the worth of originality. Kind of hard to explain. If you do watch it, don't worry about feeling confused – it's not really meant to be logical.

6. IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE (2000) dir. Wong Kar-wai (HK - romance)
>A melancholy story about the love between a woman and a man who live in the same building and one day find out that their husband and wife had an affair with each other.
Very comfy, and beautifully shot. A movie about cheating that focuses on empathy rather than revenge.

7. THROUGH A GLASS DARKLY (1961) - dir. Ingmar Bergman (SWE - family drama)
>Karin hopes to recover from her recent stay at a mental hospital by spending the summer at her family’s cottage on a tiny island. Her husband cares for her but is frustrated by her physical withdrawal. Her younger bother is confused by Karin’s vulnerability and his own budding sexuality. Their father cannot overcome his haughty remoteness. Beset by visions, Karin descends further into madness.
Dark and existential, tackles incest, faith, and mental illness. But very poignant and engaging.

8. NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN (2007) - dir. Coen Brothers (USA - western neo-noir thriller)
>Llewelyn Moss stumbles upon dead bodies, $2 million and a hoard of heroin in a Texas desert, but methodical killer Anton Chigurh comes looking for it, with local sheriff Ed Tom Bell hot on his trail. The roles of prey and predator blur as the violent pursuit of money and justice collide.
It's just cool as fuck. If you like westerns you'll probably enjoy it.

9. GRAVE/RAW (2016) - dir. Julia Ducournau (FRA/BELG - horror/drama/coming of age)
>Justine, youngest in a family of vegetarian veterinarians, begins vet school at the age of 16 and is forced to eat raw meat for the first time during a hazing ritual.
Marketed as a horror but more of a coming-of-age. Has a kind of conservative allegorical message about the consequences of living to excess.

10. GREEN ROOM (2015) - dir. Jeremy Saulnier (USA - horror)
>A young punk rock band find themselves trapped in a secluded venue after stumbling upon a horrific act of violence.
Just a solid thriller. Bleak and isolated with pointed, effective violence the way thrillers (IMO) should be.

11. THE WAILING (2016) - dir. Na Hong-jin (KOR - horror)
>A Japanese stranger arrives in a little Korean village and soon after a mysterious sickness starts spreading. A policeman is drawn into the incident and is forced to solve the mystery in order to save his daughter.
Well acted with some really cool, mesmerizing sequences. Has an interesting cultural element.

12. THE KILLING OF A SACRED DEER (2017) - dir. Yorgos Lanthimos (IRE/UK - horror)
>A teenager’s attempts to bring a brilliant surgeon into his dysfunctional family take an unexpected turn.
Strange, illogical, and kind of uncomfortable (but funny as fuck, at least IMO).

13. PRZYPADEK (1987) - dir. Krzystof Kieslowski (POL - drama)
>Witek runs after a train. Three variations follow on how such a seemingly banal incident could influence the rest of Witek’s life.
I'm honestly not sure why I liked this so much so I dunno how to recommend it. There's a pretty heavy niche political element that might put off some people (though the real-life political backstory of the film is pretty interesting). Watch the Criterion release.

14. LE FEU FOLLET (1963) - dir. Louis Malle (FRA - drama)
>Alain Leroy is a recovering alcoholic who decides to end his life, but first decides to visit his friends in Paris one last time, in an attempt at finding a reason to continue living.
A depressed man realizes his existence is irrelevant. Beautifully shot but it really fucked me up when I first watched it.

15. BLADE RUNNER (1982) - dir. Ridley Scott (USA - neo-noir scifi)
>In the smog-choked dystopian Los Angeles of 2019, blade runner Rick Deckard is called out of retirement to terminate a quartet of replicants who have escaped to Earth seeking their creator for a way to extend their short life spans.
Very slow sleepy movie, NOT the action film a lot of people unfamiliar with it assume it is. Has aged kind of poorly but I still enjoyed it watching it for the first time last year. The worldbuilding and set design really help the visuals stand out.

16. POSSESSION (1981) - dir. Andrzej Zulawski (FRA/GER - psych. horror-drama)
>A young woman left her family for an unspecified reason. The husband determines to find out the truth and starts following his wife. At first, he suspects that a man is involved. But gradually, he finds out more and more strange behaviors and bizarre incidents that indicate something more than a possessed love affair.
Weird as fuck, pretty creepy/unsettling with some pretty sickening sequences. Isabelle Adjani is amazing in it (plus she's just a qt).

17. SLEEP HAS HER HOUSE (2017) - dir. Scott Barley (UK - experimental)
>The shadows of screams climb beyond the hills. It has happened before. But this will be the last time. The last few sense it, withdrawing deep into the forest. They cry out into the black, as the shadows pass away, into the ground.
The official summary doesn't reveal much because honestly not much happens. A very visually dark film, almost primitive in its simplicity. Really, really slow though, just a warning. There are no characters, no dialog, some of the shots stretch on for many minutes with almost no development on-screen. Very masterfully constructed IMO. Really depressing.

18. SYNECDOCHE, NEW YORK (2008) - dir. Charlie Kaufman (USA - postmodern drama)
>A theater director struggles with his work, and the women in his life, as he attempts to create a life-size replica of New York inside a warehouse as part of his new play.
Explores existentialism, solipsism, and the universal nature of human experience.

19. ANGST (1983) - dir. Gerald Kargl (AUSTRIAN - horror)
>A killer is released from prison and breaks into a remote home to kill a woman, her handicapped son and her pretty daughter.
Very violent, with some very cool filming techniques and good sound design.

20. OSLO 31 AUGUST (2011) - dir. Joachim Trier (NORW - drama)
>Anders is a recovering drug addict in an Oslo rehab clinic. On the 30th August, he is given a day’s leave to attend a job interview in the city centre.
Based on the same source material as Le Fou Follet. Not as well shot as that movie and the protagonist is kind of different. The protagonist is an addict but it's not really a film about drugs. Pretty depressing.

LAST POST I PROMISE I don't want to sperg the thread up too much

21. PICNIC AT HANGING ROCK (1975) - dir. Peter Weir (AUS - mystery drama)
>On Valentine's Day in 1900, a group of schoolgirls set out to picnic at Hanging Rock. Several of them disappear , never to be seen again.
Ambient, droning, and dreamlike. Also very ambiguous, and kind of unsettling without being pure horror.

22. THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE (1974) - dir. Tobe Hooper (USA - horror)
>Five friends visiting their grandfather’s house in the country are hunted and terrorized by a chain-saw wielding killer and his family of grave-robbing cannibals.
A classic for a reason. Grimy and visceral without being overly gory or violent.

23. JAGTEN (2012) - dir. Thomas Vinterberg (DEN - drama)
>A teacher lives a lonely life, all the while struggling over his son’s custody. His life slowly gets better as he finds love and receives good news from his son, but his new luck is about to be brutally shattered by an innocent little lie.
A nursery teacher is accused of sexually abusing a child and although he's not guilty he must deal with the outcome of the accusation. Kind of fascinating to watch as a victim of child sexual abuse myself.

24. 12 ANGRY MEN (1957) - dir. Sidney Lumet (USA - courtroom drama)
>The defense and the prosecution have rested and the jury is filing into the jury room to decide if a young Spanish-American is guilty or innocent of murdering his father. What begins as an open and shut case soon becomes a mini-drama of each of the jurors’ prejudices and preconceptions about the trial, the accused, and each other.
Another classic that deserves to be a classic. I really was expecting to be bored by this but it's riveting despite being so simple.

25. HAPPINESS (1998) - dir. Todd Solondz (USA - black comedy-drama)
>The lives of many individuals connected by the desire for happiness, often from sources usually considered dark or evil.
This movie is kind of disgusting (and there IS child sexual abuse in this one). Very perverse.

26. CACHE (2005) - dir. Michael Haneke (INT'L - psych. thriller)
>A married couple is terrorized by a series of videotapes planted on their front porch.
Mysterious and deceptive with some political commentary. There's a lot to unpack in this film, and it's definitely not a straightforward thriller.

27. STALKER (1979) - dir. Andrei Tarkovsky (RUS - sci-fi/art)
>Near a gray and unnamed city is the Zone, a place guarded by barbed wire and soldiers, and where the normal laws of physics are victim to frequent anomalies. A Stalker guides two men into the Zone, specifically to an area in which deep seeded desires are granted.
long, slow, and philosophical. beautifully shot.

28. THE STRAIGHT STORY (1999) - dir. David Lynch (USA - drama)
>“The Straight Story” chronicles a trip made by 73-year-old Alvin Straight from Laurens, Iowa, to Mt. Zion, Wisconsin, in 1994 while riding a lawn mower. The man undertook his strange journey to mend his relationship with his ill, estranged, 75-year-old brother Lyle.
probably one of Lynch's most calming, comforting films. It's just very nice and gentle.

29. THE PIANO TEACHER (2001) - dir. Michael Haneke (FRA - psych. thriller)
>Erika Kohut, a sexually repressed piano teacher living with her domineering mother, meets a young man who starts romantically pursuing her.
Perverse and uncomfortable. Basically a very stark and disturbing look at sexual repression.

Am I the only one who was underwhelmed with Citizen Kane?

I watched it last night and while I can see the effort and groundbreaking techniques used in filming, the camera angles, layering etc., I didn't feel emotionally connected to any of the characters in the movie and I didn't find the story interesting at all.

For those that haven't watched it, Citizen Kane, a wealthy newspaper publisher dies and his last words were "Rosebud" and a reporter is tasked to find out what he meant by that so they could publish a good newsreel about Kane.
I'd still recommend other farmers to watch the movie. I guess the fact that it's commonly titled as the best movie EVER had me expecting much more.

Sunset Boulevard is another movie I watched rather recently. It is also an older movie from the 50s but the acting is incredibly good. The story revolves around a silent movie actress, a former star that wants to get back into acting and hires a broke writer, former journalist to help her with the script.
The ending scene of Sunset Blvd. is one of the most famous ones, so if you don't feel like watching it, at least check out the ending. In short, the movie is a parody of then Hollywood but I guess you could apply it to the vaster population now, the desire to remain relevant, the need to get attention and doing whatever it takes to have the spotlight.

Tbh hype has dissapointed me so many times. Now I don’t watch trailers or look up reviews until I’ve watched it entirely for myself. I feel it’s better to just go in without expectations. I know if I’d heard the hype around Lady Bird, for example, I wouldn’t have liked it as much as I did.

Some Korean movies I've seen recently:

>I SAW THE DEVIL

This movie. So. Many. Graphic. Scenes. Choi Min Sik is a wonderful actor and carries the movie, Lee Byung-hun is good but very stoic. I saw it once and never again, because I realized the shock factor of the movie only works once and when it goes away you begin to notice all the plot holes. Plenty of sickening scenes, so be careful. (Spoilers) Korea must be fucking paradise for serial killers (thought it was America) since there's so many of them (taxi scene and serial killer friend). Every woman in this movie has no use other than being raped/murdered or both. I'm not expecting every woman in movies to be a badass, but come on. No character development whatsoever.

>MY SASSY GIRL

Dropped. I heard so much praise for this movie, it's probably the most well known korean movie before Oldboy and honestly, I don't see the hype. I like Jun Ji Hyun but her character here is so unlikeable, I only got to the middle of it. I couldn't stand the female lead mistreating the protagonist at every turn and while I do know something happens at the end, I won't be investing more time on this movie.

>TRAIN TO BUSAN

Watched this with my family. It's a fairly entertaining movie if you can look past the atrocious acting and the super dramatic scenes. Gong Yoo is just terrible here and pales in comparison to the child actress. Actually, most of the adult actors suck. The zombies are pretty well done tho. (Spoilers) This is way you don't stick idols in movies. Sohee is the worst actress ever. Also, I was so disappointed when the soldier didn't shoot them. It would have been a more powerful ending, and a better movie overall.

I finally just watched the shape of water last night and I adored it. I am a big fan of del toro anyway, mostly pan's labyrinth and the orphanage, but this was just lovely, reads like a dark fairytale just like how I loved the other two. The eccentric characters, different languages, colour palette, actors and actresses and themes, and most of all, doug jones and his costuming, which was immaculate as usual.

Eliza gave me some serious Amelie vibes for the whole movie though. Not a bad thing, but definitely seemed to draw from her character.

I also recently watched annihilation and although it felt extremely rushed and concised and missing bits, it was visually beautiful, a gorgeous landscape and concept and universe. I love that mix of beauty and sheer terror.

I was a big fan of del toro also because of the pan's labyrinth and the orphanage yet the Shape of Water imo was pure garbage.

Where to start? The characters are cliche, the main antagonist is the typical villain made a caricature, the only thing that was lacking was maybe an evil laughter. And yes, I got serious Amelie vibes from her too but that irked me even more because it felt like a cheap stunt and easy writing. I like quirky characters done right, but in the movie it made Elisa look retarded and childish in a cringeworthy manner. Also, a sassy black woman sidekick? Seriously? You can't get more cliche than that. Oh, wait, you can with del Toro to the rescue. Add the merman, the evil governments and a kind-hearted scientist that does everything in the name of science to the mix and voila, you get the Shape of Water. Lastly, the merman or the fish god who I confess looks pretty hot in a way, he's the typical savage monster that has this softer, kinder and just side to him. All of it has been written and seen before, maybe I'm too old? I would have supposed this movie was intended for kids but then the sex scene, the masturbation, scenes, and a bit more violent scenes nullify all of that.

The love story between Elisa and the merman seems rushed and what made it even more unbelievable was that their friends, the sassy black woman, and her gay friend are completely okay with the fish dude, even after the fish guy devours a cat, so much that her friend asks how they had sex, instead of being shocked that they had sex at all. I also didn't like the huge plot holes and the predictability of the entire movie that's the inevitable result of the cartoonish story writing.

Visually shape of water delivers, there are some nice shots and the soundtrack is all right, it compliments the fairytale story.

Another thing that bothered me was the message of the movie, how just because someone is different we should except them, which on its own is entirely fine, however I think there was a line or two in the movie where it sounded much more like in the context of accepting immigrants. I'm not alt right for the record but I detest when someone pushes such things down my throat.

I don't mean to offend, a lot of people love Shape of Water but I was personally left disappointed. The movie is maybe nice to pass an afternoon to but it's definitely not deserving of an oscar, although we all know that the oscars don't mean anything anymore.

I recently watched Tampopo and really loved it. It's sort of like a spoof on western films, but about ramen, and also the eroticism of food. It's basically a collection of vignettes featuring food, tied together with an overarching storyline about a woman who enlists the help of a trucker to make her ramen restaurant better. I highly recommend it to anyone who likes food, westerns, and humor.

My favorite movie ever is Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. I absolutely adore it and it never fails to make me cry in certain scenes. For instance, there's a scene where it starts raining in Joel's apartment when he and Clementine start singing a childhood song, and he runs under the table and it flashes back to when he was a kid laughing and playing in the rain, and god the music that plays during it makes me tear up every time like nothing else. If you haven't seen the movie I highly recommend it, to me it's a masterpiece.

I share your thoughts on My Sassy Girl, I've heard from everyone how heartwarming and funny the movie was so I gave it a watch, had to turn it off after twenty minutes or so. Watched Pitch Perfect (1) for the first time a while ago because it was supposed to be the funniest film of its release year and a real pick-me-up watch. So I dived in and… is the fanbase some sort of inside joke? People raved about the film (and the sequel) when it came out so I had to find out for myself but I don't get it.

I cringed through the whole film. Every character was unlikable, embarrassing (not even in a funny way), Rebel Wilson grated on me through the whole feature. People hero-worshipped her character (Amy?) but she was just such an edgelord not-like-other-girls, same goes for the main character (Becca?). The singing was all awful, autotuned, and I had to turn it down for the singing sequences. Those "mixes" the main character made were like something you'd find in the shitposting side of soundcloud.

Asian girl is super quiet, lesbian girl is hypersexual and creepy to people, I laughed maybe once through the whole film (and it was more of an exhaling-sharply-through-nose).

Did I miss something? Even trying to take the film as a lighthearted, fun, not-at-all-serious thing, it just fell completely flat and awkward for me.

Kevin Spacey narrates the plot the whole time, there's no internal coherence and I was disappointed it didn't have that snappy clever Wright editing.

yeah I didn't like it either, I felt really underwhelmed because a) I bought into the hype which I usually try not to do, and b) it didn't have Wright's style of writing like you said. Plus I had a hard time buying Elgort in the lead role. I can't be that easily convinced that he's cool lol.

I just finished watching Children of Men and the movie is so-so. I saw it recommended so many times on imageboards but that's because of the theme of the movie I guess, a dystopian future (which is actually past now kek) where there's an infertility epidemic and barely any babies are being born. Now that I think about it when I imagine a dystopian future, it has more to deal with too many people on the planet, rather than an infertility crisis, you'd think that a human life would be more precious. There's a refugee crisis and for some reason refugees in the movie are being called fugees, lel don't know who came up with that. So, hunger, poverty, immigration crisis. The protagonist gets a task to help a young girl reach a certain destination. This is where the adventure starts. I found some of the dialogues cringey, the characters were lacking in depth and the story itself wasn't bad but I'm not sure if I would recommend it to anyone. 5/10

Thanks again for the movie. At first, I thought it was going to be a typical "lovely couple moves into a haunted house" movie but I'm so glad that I was wrong.

I really liked the movie I wish the story was a bit more subtle with the biblical allegories however the emotions it provoked in me were strong and the last part of the movie was really intense, that I had to strongly resist the urge to pause.

It's a comic book movie, people get killed/resurrected in Marvel comics ALL the fucking time and probably the only character that has stayed dead is Uncle Ben. But that being said, the sequels for Guardians of the Galaxy, Spiderman, Black Panther etc are in the works already and the screenwriter has already hinted at the scenario in a possible Dr. Strange sequel so yeah, they're all going to come back. Idk why people lost their shit over the ending, you have to be an absolute buffoon if you think they're going to die for real. It's so obvious they're going to do a Deus ex Machina and everything is going according to Dr. Strange's plan based on the one possible outcome he saw in the future.

Anyway I liked the movie fine. Thanos was an extremely interesting villain compared to everyone else in previous Marvel movies.

Oh my fucking god are you kidding me?
This movie was the worst movie I ever watched. And I watched hella lot of movies including A serbian film.
I watched it in the cinema and I actually thought about leaving and I never thought about that.
Like when it really broke off with all of the violence I was really like "What the fuck is even happening" and then it just went on and on and on and on and on with no sense and no common theme at all. I get that it is supposed to be about mother earth and how humankind is destroying it big time, but it was just a huge fuck-up of a movie.

No. 247435

>>247396
The message of the movie was simple and obvious, which I agree but the thing that I liked about the movie is the emotions it delivered along with it.

Since most of us live in a place where capitalism reigns rampant, the best way to understand what we are doing to Earth is in terms of property and since we are anthropocentric presenting the damages in forms of damages to the property and a human was a brilliant idea.

I liked the personal filter that the movie used with her point of view. I liked the use of camera angles that made me feel like I had no air to breathe, I liked the crisp sound details, and the acting was top tier.

The relationship dynamic between the couple, mother and God was also interesting. If you ignore the premise of the movie, it's a story of a giver and a taker, someone who unconditionally loves and gives with the other person taking the love to feed his narcissistic and egotistic nature even if his selfish actions hurt his beloved one, bordering with psychopathy. It's also a story of an artist that gets addicted to the attention and the spotlight.

I completely get why someone wouldn't like the movie and I also didn't like how the movie was supposed to be about that one single point that Aranofsky was trying to convey and the blatantly obvious idea behind it all yet the movie made me feel the pain from her perspective. I felt her state of being vulnerable and defenseless and I was in fear of her well being throughout the movie.

I don't think it hurts to remind people ever so often that we are guests on this planet, and that the damage we do to it on a daily basis is real and it hurts the planet even though most likely the director himself doesn't care much about the environment.

No. 247564

I love Aranofsky but I hated this movie. 90% of it is frustratingly boring and the ending was almost comically violent. His other films are fantastically disturbing, well paced, and stay with you for hours after the credits roll. Nothing about this movie was redeeming or insightful. It was a parable for Mother Earth, okay, that's nice.

Also Jennifer Lawrence is a terrible fucking actress and I really could not stand to watch her constantly making the same stupid, confused face. Knowing the only reason she was cast is because she was fucking the director made it hard to take her seriously as well.

Has anyone else watched Okja?

I thought the movie was so-so. I like animals and usually, movies with animals in them and the protagonist having a special bond with them are dear to me, with my crying a lot. This movie didn't touch me at all.

The plot is the following, a company that has a bad reputation gets a new CEO who wants to improve their public image by raising so called super pigs that leave a lesser ecological footprint, need lesser resources and they can provide more meat in return. These super pigs are sent around the world for a ten year experiment, one of the lucky owners being the girl Mija that we see is very attached to the super pig but she is also obliged to return the pig to the company.

I didn't particularly like the movie because the characters are caricatures that act in a cartoonish way, the story is predictable and the overall message and the execution is shallow. Also, the main girl is cute and has a chubby face, but I thought her acting sucked. She has pretty much the same 2-3 facial expressions throughout the movie and the CGI pig looks too fake, too unreal to actually make me feel sorry for it.

I love Tilda Swinton, so I'm a bit disappointed.

I actually really liked this film, it has charm. I think the mythical madeup creature was to capture the hearts of meat eaters and make them empathise with it. If it was a normal animal they eat anyway they would most likely avoid the film and sneer that the film is 'vegan bullshit'. As they connect with Okja throughout the film then they will relate it to what farm and industry animals go through. The aim of the film after all was to promote vegetarianism and veganism but to a wide audience.

So, I watched Young Adult with Charlize Theron and give it a 4/10.
I don't know what I was expecting and I honestly wouldn't recommend it.
Since I don't really see myself growing up in a sense of having family, kids or having a desire to do that, I guess I wanted a movie with something I could relate myself to. Instead, they negatively portrayed the main character, the young adult and made it look like a bad thing.

In short, she receives the news that her ex became a dad, comes to visit him in their small rural hometown in hopes to rekindle their old love.

So, if you have movies that are related to people, especially women with a peter pan syndrome, that would be nice.

I liked 100 yen love even with its corny love story. It's about a neet girl that started sorting her life out but it's still more relatable than whatever Young Adult was supposed to be.

You might've already seen it, but Kumiko the Treasure Hunter is definitely in this vein. It also deals with themes of escapism, maladaptive fantasizing, alienation and societal expectations of aging women. I think the movie Sunshine is very underrated and people who enjoy sci-fi should really give it a shot. It's very intense towards the end and feels rather claustrophobic given the good performances and setting. People are split on the third act but I personally quite enjoyed it. I wished the ending had done something different like had one of the crew go insane instead of the guy from the other trip do it and make it seem initially like it was a surviving crew member but the reveal is that it isn't. That or have them destroy the ship more through their infighting but I still found the movie well made and the whole thing overall still an amazing watch. If you can I would say watch it on a tv vs a computer or phone because the effects are really beautiful and the planets look outstanding. Kanopy is free if your local library has it, and there are lots of great movies on it. The only downside is you only get to watch 15 movies per month.

I love FilmStruck. Highly recommended if you're interested in classic film. They have practically every Criterion Collection film (though it costs a little extra).

HBO has tons of good documentaries, though not as many as Netflix. Good TV series too.

I rarely use Hulu, except for a few TV shows.

Prime is cool, but it's the only service I use that isn't compatible with the Chromecast, which is annoying.

I'm not sure how many of you are familiar with Béla Tarr?

I watched Turin Horse (2011) just yesterday and loved it.

Storywise, it's about a father and a daughter living with little what they've got on their potato farm with their horse. The movie follows six days of their bleak everyday life.

I loved the camera work, the chiaroscuro (the entire movie is black and white), and the subtle sounds.

I keep thinking about the movie and it left a huge impact on me.

>Anyone have any thoughts on Hereditary?
Saw it recently because it was being way over-hyped online. The music/sound is incredible but there's honestly no story. If you've seen any horror movie ever, you've already seen Hereditary. There was one scene that was honestly shocking for me but the other scenes which people were complaining "keep them up at night" and they "can't get out of their head" were so cliché and boring.

The cast were also amazing and created such a tense atmosphere but I feel really bad that they were let down by a really shitty plot and an even shittier ending. I kept sitting there thinking "I can't wait for something to happen!" and then it never does, it's super anti-climactic. If you want to know why it's cliché:

It's the story of a manic grieving mother who nobody believes can communicate with her dead child. There's a creepy child who is obsessed with death. The family fight. There are some super-cliché shock scenes. There's a spooky woman who knows too much. Oh, and it turns out that the whole thing was part of some Satanic worship because ofc it was and everyone was just possessed the whole time, surprise! Also, everyone dies.

Based on your spoiler plot summary, you didn’t get the movie. A lot of what you said is flat out wrong. Just saying.

I thought it was okay. More of a character driven piece with a lot of style and drama than anything terribly scary. The acting of the mother was superb. The cinematography was clearly well done and intentional. I think a lot of the symbolism was too obscure, a lot of the twists were too obvious, and the ending was rushed. But it was alright as far as horror goes.

A Ghost Story was a good movie. I'd give it 7.5/10

First of all, it's not a scary movie, there's no gore, it's a supernatural drama.

When I started watching I was a bit bored. The story begins with a couple that seems to have run into troubled waters but they still seem to love each other a lot. I thought the movie would be some cheesy drama about how love is eternal and the ghost does some cliche goodbye to his mourning lover. Luckily, that was not the case.

The movie is slow in a good way, has a surprisingly good OST for an indie movie (I think it's indie) and some scenes are really beautiful which is what made me keep watching the somewhat boring beginning of the movie.

My favorite part was that nihilistic monologue about the futility of wanting to create a legacy that a lot of people thought was over the top and different from the main tone of the movie, but imo it was perfect. I thought that there's comfort in thinking that nothing really matters and that we should enjoy our lives as much as possible because that's all there is. No grand schemes, no divine beings, just us on this planet.

I liked that movie too. I didn't like the party scene at first because I thought it was obnoxious but then I came around to it when I realized how darkly funny it was to see a dude waxing philosophical about how everybody dies while a literal ghost who can't escape existence listens in.

Hm, it's really interesting to read about this movie from the perspective of someone who liked it because I didn't enjoy it too much after watching. I felt like many scenes of the movie were directed in a certain way just to seem "deep" or different if that makes sense (like the scene of the main character eating pie for several minutes straight- we get it, she's sad). The party monologue felt like it was hitting the audience over the head with what the point of the movie was supposed to be.

I will admit that some aspects of this movie were really cool. Seeing the ghost wander around the skyscraper after the house is torn down and the settler scene were both neat. I kept thinking about the movie after I saw it, so I'll give it that.

> the story of a manic grieving mother who nobody believes can communicate with her dead child
She only shares the info with her son and husband, her son believes her and her husband doesn't- so "nobody" being one person. Not to mention she doesn't communicate with said dead child until nearing the final act, and only does so twice. To summarize the plot like that is just flat out wrong. Its the story of a woman whose mother was a cultist who made her newborn baby be inhabited by a demon. The main point of the movie is that her daughter is killed and her son is attacked by the cultists so the demon can inhabit his more suitable body.

>There's a creepy child who is obsessed with death.
Nope. A child who beheaded one bird, as a parallel to her own beheading. Nothing else to indicate obsessed with death.

>spooky woman who knows too much
Again, nope. There is a woman who is supposedly grieving her own losses who then turns out to be in on the devil worship and knew the dead Grandma. idk if you view that as "knowing too much" but she isn't portrayed as knowing "too much." She knows more than the main character, but thats because its supposed to be a semi-mystery of her finding out about her dead mom.

>everyone was just possessed the whole time
this is the biggest wtf for me. No one was possessed "the whole time" except the kid. Near the end, the son is possessed and the mom. But its obviously so and not supposed to be a "surprise!"

>everyone dies.
The mom, dad, and son die. The "daughter," who was the evil demon, was brought back. All the worshipers survive, including the aforementioned woman.

I wanted to thank you again for recommending me The Hourglass Sanatorium. I loved it to the point that I'm planning on watching it again this weekend, and I'm also going to watch Jerzy Has's The Saragossa Manuscript and The Doll.

The movie itself was visually stunning, especially when you take into account that it was made in the early 1970's. I love the surreal dreamlike experience that you get from watching this movie. It truly IS art in every possible sense.

I figured the movie was about the jewish community in Poland, where we see it grow, flourish and then die with the advent of Nazi's seen through the eyes of an individual, like how you'd imagine the thoughts of a dying man to be; the childhood memories, deep inner thoughts, fears, lust… all tangled into one long dream sequence. I'm still not sure what him becoming the train conductor in the end really meant.

I'm probably missing a lot, there were a lot of little details, reoccurring themes, the distorted time but altogether it was a great experience.

The movie reminded me a lot of the Last Year at Marienbad which I'd also recommend to others. Both movies are surreal and a dreamplay of sort.

Thoroughbreds is such a shit movie. It was advertised as some Psycho meets Heathers just it's not.
The plot is about a girl that doesn't feel any emotions who gets tutored by her used to be bff who has a rich step father now, and they decide to plot his murder when he's not even that of a bad guy which I assume is telling of the psychopath nature of the step daughter.
The movie's not deep, the characters are revolting, and the story's meh. I'm pissed that I wasted 1.30h on this trash.

4 months-late reply, but :
Spoilers and spoiler alerts are a thing from the very first black and white movies. It was even more important at the time, some movies even including at the end a "Please do not tell the ending to future spectators, let them enjoy the movie" warning (ie Les Diaboliques)

A well told movie isn't going to be RUINED because you told the ending, but doing so you deprive the one you told of the surprise and amazement you felt upon the revelation of the twist. Clouzot or Hitchock know much, much better than you how to slowly raise expectations to a sudden twist, and spoiling a movie does exactly that : it wastes their efforts in that particular aspect. So no, don't spoil movies, it's a purely selfish and pointless action

Upgrade is a dystopian scifi vendetta movie where after a mugging, a guy is left quadriplegic and his wife dead. But he gets a chip implant that makes him superhuman and he goes on to revenge.

It's also a dystopian scifi movie starring Christian Bale in a society where emotions and things that evoke emotions are prohibited and punished by death.

The movie is definitely underrated and I hope some of you may enjoy it. The acting is superb, and the movie, albeit with a low budget, somehow delivers a truly cinematic experience. The movie score is fantastically made by Klaus Badelt and better than any of the French horn masturbator Hans Zimmer ever did.

So, if you're in the mood for a dystopian scifi flick, those two are recommended.

I wanted to add on (I apologise)

It takes place in the 1960s, and it's about a family of five who move into a home. The mother dies shortly after they move in (like 5 mins into the movie) and she tells the eldest son he has to keep his siblings hidden until he turns 21, so he can adopt them legally. It's a really good movie with a great twist imo, and the ending left me happy. It wasn't a good ending, but it's the best ending for the situation.

My Friend Dahmer was a good movie.
The guy playing Dahmer looks hotter in that role than his usual self, and considering he played some Disney shit, he did this role incredibly well. And he does look uncannily like the real jeff.

If it weren't for killing animals, it would have been so easy to sympathize with him.

I love Emily Dickinson and upon discovering that there's a biographical movie of hers made not too long ago (2017), I immediately went to watch it.

It was a disappointment. The acting was that bad that I couldn't watch past 30 minutes of its duration.

I'm sure that Cynthia Nixon's acting in the later part of the movie improves it a bit but I just can't go through it. Maybe you can if you feel like it.

Something tells me if Emily Dickinson was alive today and saw this movie, she would have barfed.

It's a shame, the costumes are nice, the scenes are well made but the script and the acting are just cringe. As if a naive child wrote the script and people from your local small town were called to act for the first time.

And it has a 4/5 star rating on Roger Ebert. Ever since he died, the reviews are completely untrustworthy. I wonder if the person who wrote the review watched it at all.

I saw The Nun in theaters last night and it was truly one of the worst movies I've ever seen, which is a shame because the first Conjuring movie was great.

There were no scares at all aside from loud noise jump scares. Many of the "scary" parts were honestly funny, and the acting was trash.

Maybe this is nitpicky but this movie was set in the 1950s in a convent in Romania. The nuns there were wearing eyeliner and mascara and belts that cinched their waists. It was pretty ridiculous. Accents came and went, everyone spoke English. French and Romanian characters were even speaking with American accents. I saw this just to look at Taissa Farmiga but it wasn't worth it at all.

German movie Lollipop Monster is a bit similar. It seems to be inspired by Heavenly Creatures and Kamikaze Girls. It's about the unlikely friendship of a depressive emo girl and teenage Barbie.

You might also like Tragedy Girls, though I have not seen it yet. It's a horror-comedy about super close friends.

Another one is Don't Deliver Us From Evil, vaguely inspired by the Hulme-Parker case. It's a very edgelordy drama and features a heartbreaking scene of animal abuse.

I just watched American Animals and found it pretty neat. It's a true story about a group of students who attempt to steal rare and valuable books from their university library. It's listed as a crime drama but it's more like a docudrama – it switches between interviews with the actual criminals and film re-enactments (which change to accommodate the real criminals' conflicting accounts of the heist) in a seamless and sometimes pretty meta way. The style and performances are pretty good, too.

I watched it last night. I already ranted in the unpopular opinion thread, but i was way too distracted by the fact that the main lead doesnt even look half asian (korean supposedly). She looks full viet despite both characters playing her sisters looking like hapas. It would bother me as much if they weren’t trying to drop the fact that that main character is SOOOOooooo KorEANNNNNN who does KOREAAAAAN face masks, eat KOREANNNNNN bbq, and drinks quirky KOREANNNN yoghurt drinks. I know its based on a book written by a Korean American, but it was just too distracting in movie form. Its like having a full on white guy play a supposedly half black character, it just throws you off.

Its also hard for me to get into teeny bop movies where all of the other characters act like a FIFTEEN year old deciding to stay home and watch tv on a Saturday night is ~so bad for you omg get a life~. I feel like if it was done a little better it could have been really good.

The cinematography was amazing because it's fooled people into thinking this movie isn't utter shit. I'm split with this movie.
The Killing of a Sacred Deer is a psychological thriller where a heart surgeon has to redeem himself for his past action(s).

I love the way the movie was shot, the camera angles, the robotic (autistic?) way of acting between the main characters, the use of chamber music.

What I didn't like about this movie is heavy use of symbolism. I usually like it in movies, but in this movie it felt like symbolism was used just for the sake of using it, a bit too pretentious.

The movie is directed by the same person who did Lobster (which I liked). In any case, I found it an interesting movie and I'll probably think about what it all meant for a longer time, probably just shooting in the dark.

I love horror so here’s some recs, hopefully someone will enjoy. These are quick notes from my thesis so forgive the cringey writing!

Daughters of Darkness, 1971. Delphine Seyrig has a ball playing Marlene Dietrich in one of the most stylish low budget films ever made. Absolutely gorgeous to look at, with a real flair for the perverse. There’s a scene where she seduces the freaky husband in front of his newlywed wife that is both high camp and really dark. Love it.

Session 9, 2001. A group of abestos removal men take a job at an abandoned mental asylum and things begin to go wrong with a quickness. The recent Villmark Asylum is a Norwegian language version that’s not quite as good. There’s recovered memory/hypnosis weirdness, and a genuinely unnerving maybe madness, maybe supernatural pall that hangs over the whole. Good fun.

Hereditary is amazing and if you like horror, you need to see it. Love it or hate it, it’s a great looking film and is worth seeing no matter what you think of the ending.

Lake Mungo, 2008. A family deals with the death of their child, kind of. There’s a lot we learn about the family that isn’t quite so nice. With a frightened girl leading a dual life, a very scary scene in the wilderness, and an overarching melancholy.

Curtains, 1983. Weird mess of a movie with Dean Wormer from Animal House playing a lechy director holding one last casting couch session at his not so palatial manse. Creepy mask makes the whole movie, with a final girl sequence that takes place in a weirdo prop department? basement? that has to be seen to be believed. Cheesy Canadian slasher but still strangely enjoyable.

Demoniacs, 1974. Sort of incomprehensible but intriguing rape revenge movie with extra added Satan. Two orphan girls get theirs on a bunch of deviant shipwreckers in old time France. Joelle Coeur is solid as the leader of the criminal gang. Also watch: Rose of Iron, Levres de sang, Night of the Hunted, Grapes of Death.

Pieces, 1982. Poster says “you don’t have to go to Texas for a chainsaw massacre” okay, got me! Kind of giallo and kind of not, this is another off kilter whodunit with a killer who’s using coeds to make his very own girl to love. Or something. A cast of never were’s, but a lot of memorable voices from Italian dubbed pictures. Lots of practical special effects that still look pretty good and a bizarro ending that had us wondering wtf was up.

Flesh for Frankenstein aka Andy Warhol’s Frankenstein, 1973. Udo Kier is the whole reason to watch this movie. Andy didn’t have much to do with it, this is Paul Morrissey all the way. A cast of uniformly pretty people have weird sex and lose their heads to further Udo’s dream of the Serbian ideal, or whatever the fuck. It was released in 3D. John Waters loves this movie.

pic related, it’s a French actress I love named Pony Tricot.

I've recently watched "Barton Fink" and I really enjoyed it. Quick summary - set in the 1940s, a Jewish playwright from New York earns a job in Hollywood to write a screenplay about a wrestling movie. But he gets writers block. And then crazy shit starts to happen.

The atmosphere of some of the scenes were very eerie and unsettling especially as the movie progressed and, maybe it's because I'm a coward lmao, it made me feel very on edge at times. If you guys ever watched Eraserhead, this might slightly remind you of it. The characters are interesting and engaging and the acting is great, and the cinematography is excellent. And, no spoilers, but there's a sort of twist that i did NOT see coming and was really shocked when it happened (I kept expecting it to be a dream sequence but nope). The movie especially towards the end gets a little surreal and mysterious and you might get confused on if what's happening is actually reality but if you love stuff like that (I absolutely do) then give this movie a shot. Also I looked up some analysis and a few interpretations on the movie's meanings (there's a lot of different themes and such going on) and it really increased my love for the film.

So if you love surreal, mysterious and slightly creepy movies that make you think hard, with a touch of black comedy and historical backdrops, and you don't mind looking up explanations afterwards, then I'll recommend this one. And I've only seen it a few days ago but I already wanna watch it again, which in my view is a sign of a very engaging film.

Thanks all! Hope some of you got some enjoyment out of these. Shudder (streaming service in the US that focuses on horror) recently did a marathon dawn-to-dusk marathon hosted by Joe Bob Briggs aka John Bloom, who was the film reviewer for, I think, Texas Monthly back in the day and had this trash persona of a redneck that he used for his secret love, which was exploitation film. He was way more famous as Joe Bob than he was as himself, which is kinda interesting in and of itself, but! If you love learning weird factoids about movies, actors and directors presented in a unique way, this was a crazy fun series, including the aforementioned Pieces and more than a few other greats. Each 'episode' is packed full of lots and lots of film history that's rapidly disappearing now that the grindhouses are gone.

He also did two books that are good primers if you're new to the genre but want more info: Profoundly Disturbing and Profoundly Erotic. They make nice coffee table books, great graphic design.

Happy movie hunting, everyone!

There were so many points where I laughed. Some of the dialogue, especially Linus Roache's was so OTT that I couldn't help it. He definitely got the best lines. Nic Cage can be so crazily uneven as an actor and yet he was just great in this. Sometimes when he does his whole "I am giving 1000% to this part" thing you want him to slow his roll, but here it was perfect. If you're willing to go with it, it's totally enjoyable.

If anons here are looking for a genuine 90's vibe, pic related could be up your alley? The opening monologue in the back seat of the taxi is the key to the whole film. Might like it, might not, but if you like movies in general it's definitely something to see. Very much a gen x feel and I think it's one of the few honestly good indies from that time period.

As the year is coming to a close, what were your favorite movies that came out this year? Worst movies this year?
I feel like this will be a hot take here but I absolutely loved Overlord. I had fun most of the movie and it really felt like you were playing a game. Wyatt Russel is also a plus for me. Movies I re-watched in theaters or will most likely buy to support -
Venom
Halloween
Incredibles 2
BlacKkKlansman
A Quiet Place

Slenderman was def the worst movie I saw in theaters this year. I went with friends to laugh and was so mad at how unfunny bad it was. Other honorable mentions that pissed me off -
Annihilation - I WANTED to like it so bad. i did like parts of it and it was visually stunning but it was just not a good movie. Jennifer Jason Leigh was fantastic in it.
Predator - This franchise is such a guilty pleasure for me but it really seems like each movie is trying to be worse than the last.

Oh God, I know this feel so much. I thought that some visuals were stunning and that, finally, we have a group of women that are brave and whose conversation doesn't revolve around men or being catty to each other, but there was something lacking in the story, and I hate the supposed deep meaning behind what the zone is.

That scene near the very end gave me goosebumps, otherwise I just wasn't impressed with the movie.

I just had to make a post about this movie. Bird Box is so overrated. What was the hype about? It's not scary, it doesn't hold suspense, it's silly, the ending is anti-climatic. The acting was disappointing and the story itself sounded as if it was fanfic written by a high schooler.

It's not bad but I would rate it 5/10. Average. Shame on me I guess.

I personally enjoyed Annihilation but my issue was the character tropes. You had the tough one, the really smart quiet nerdy one, the "we must continue the mission no matter what", then of course you know the main character survives and will probably be the only one that does. Other than that I found it very intriguing throughout.

Last year I watched Hereditary and I was so impressed by it. All the subtle things they did throughout the movie is so true to the writings of the lesser key of Solomon I was so happy with it. Shortly after I watched The Nun with some friends in theaters and I knew it was going to be terrible but I didn't think it was going to be that horrible. I personally enjoy any movies based around the occult and religion but The Nun was a couple hours of my life I cant get back.

Yeah. I mean, I wasn't aware of the memes, I just saw everyone talking about it and wanted to know if it was that good. I thought Hereditary was an ok movie, not brilliant but decent.

This one, however, was just nonsensical. It's a movie to pass your time if you really have nothing else to do.
Annihilation at least had nice shots. This movie didn't even have that.

I loved it! It definitely wasn't the strongest Black Mirror story as the focus was obviously the episode's interactivity, but I didn't mind; it was fun and some of the endings were pure mindfuck. They did a good job on creating the paths, too. After I got my first ending, it felt really smooth and natural to go back to the earlier choices and see how the story can play out. I watched it with my friends and that was an interesting experience as well. Some of them always wanted to pick the worst stuff, others tried to save the protagonist and in the end, everyone just screamed at the TV screen.

Yes! I got pretty much all the endings when I played it for 4ish hours and now I'm happy to never touch it again, but I wish there was more so I could immerse myself in the aesthetic and nerdy true crime style lore.

I'm not normally the reeee normies type but finishing it I went to reddit because I wanted other people's opinions and you could just see how many people there had never strayed from Facebook or played a VN before, eg people asking about their single dead end route like they hadn't thought to replay, ot that didn't think to re-try the same route, random posts replying to god knows who without quoting… Felt very smuganimegirl.jpeg

I thought it was extremely stylish and well-made, as usual for Black Mirror. I loved the setting and the attention to detail in crafting 1980s London, the music, the TV presenters. But I wasn't convinced by the story. I found it quite tedious at times, like others have said, I just think the story was sacrificed to put more focus on the interactive element. This is fair enough, the interactive element was really interesting and unique. But not my favourite episode at all.

Cool! I was sceptical of her at first but she really played her role so beautifully in season 2. Can't wait for the next one!!

Speaking of television series, I just started watching Bramwell (1995-1998) on a whim and I'm so extremely pleasantly surprised at how good it is.

>In 1895, women were not expected to work - or even know about - medicine. Women were expected to work as house-wives, mothers, teachers and nurses. One woman was determined to change that. Eleanor Bramwell works under Sir Herbert Hamilton's supervision. She isn't happy. After he stupidly loses a perfectly healthy young mother, Eleanor decides it is time to make her mark in medical history. Mocked by fellow medical students and questioned by her father, Doctor Robert Bramwell, Eleanor is soon given a renovated building - by donation of the kind Lady Cora Peters - and begins her own infirmary - The Thrift. But with all odds against her, will she survive? Will she make her dream come true? Will her colleagues trust her?

Including a synopsis in case it interests someone else! Side note: the captions are hilarious because so often it just says [INAUDIBLE] because of the accents.

OK! So i've been watching a lot more movies these days, a lot of them i've gotten from this thread, but i kinda am running out of ideas for my next visions, so if you have any i'll be glad to try them.
I think i am going to try and explain some of my faves that i don't remember being posted already:
//Valerie and her weeks of wonders: Gohtic fever dream, watch if you like confusion and beauty
// Level five : French documentary about a dev wife, tranquil and nostalgic
// Memories of matsuko : A film about the decadence of a cute girl. It's really sad and would be fitting for the "desolated looser woman" category an anon was searching for.
//Antiporno : Art movie about repressed sexuality and sadness in general. Sad.
//Drawing restrain nine: :)
//Ichi the killer: FUN but not so good
//Tokyo decadence: :O
// La Clepsydre: Oniric and confusing, about dementia and great
// Sweet movie: A great avant garde movie with sweet visuals.
//Alice 1988: My favorite adaptation, watch the director's other works, he is a claynimation master.
// Les garçons sauvages: Watch it, please :)
// Taxidermia: It's gross and it made my friends go away but it's well shot and intelligent.
//Kuso: If you like flying lotus, david firth and the Brainfeeder crew AND can make the abstraction of shite humor you CAN like it.
//Zardoz: It's tacky but pretty smart about it's message. And fun.
//Skins: Aesthetics over substance but i LIKED IT
//Delicatessen: It's about a human-meat consuming comunity in post apocalyptic Paris. Just awesome.
//Strange circus: My favourite Sono Sion, about toxic famillies and the effect on it's members.
Remember to watch a lot of movies and DRINK SOME MF WATER babes, good night!!

This movie was just terrible. The little girl was particularly annoying with her screeching and worst acting possible. Throughout the movie, I just didn't care about any of the characters. None of them had any depth or redeemable qualities.
And if I were to judge it solely on being an action movie, I'd say I should have been paid to watch it. The fight scenes are practically the same (there's lots of them). There's no satisfying choreography or something to make you go wow.
Even the costumes looked cheap at times, as if they were bought on aliexpress.
The story doesn't make sense. There's no conclusion or explanation. A lot of the characters act against their character all the time. I know it's based on a manga but c'mon.
The only good thing about this movie is the hair styling. Gotta give them props for the impeccable hair.

My fav movie is Oldboy
The sort of prequel Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance is good, too. Have yet to see Sympathy for Lady Vengeance, the sort of sequel, and am excited to. I wonder what it would be like to watch the American Oldboy (as a trash movie). I def wanna watch The Handmaiden, too, and am excited about that aswell. Park Chan-wook is a cool dude I guess.
Oldboy was special for me because I was unhappily staying with a real douchebag at the time who randomly put it on. I had no idea what to expect or any expectation to begin with (this can be great for the experience). I was completely blown away by the story and story-telling and speechless afterwards (dude got up and fucked around on his pc without any reaction at all). I have listened to the soundtrack a billion times, too. Disclaimer: it's edgy and sick.

As a teen I started making a list of every single movie I had ever seen without discrimination and would see. Was quite some (impossible) project and I really had to dig in my memory but it was lots of fun. Lost the list though.

Here is a v random list (tired) of some movies I like which haven't been mentioned. Very random

The Big Lebowski
The Shining
Up (wholesome)
The Last Unicorn (wholesome)
The sword in the stone (wholesome)
Django Unchained
Inglorious Basterds
Carol

About Carol
I'm in love with the movie for some reason but sadly can't say it's the chemistry or emotion overall because I just don't feel it and I agree with some critics that say it's empty and bloodless and studied. I watched it two and a half times recently because I really wanted to love it more. It was an experience though. If anyone has seen it and wants to give their opinion or roast, I'd love to read it.
I wanna get the book, too, that might be more to my liking.

This is a cool thread, I'll be sure to get inspired here.

Agreed. I usually don't have high expectations for kids in movies, but this one was really bad.

On a related note, the Fall from 2006 has a little girl as a deuteragonist and I didn't find her annoying at all. In fact, her acting seemed sincere and not forced. You know, when they make kids talk like adults? I absolutely hate that.

So, the Fall is visually stunning. The plot is simple but the good acting makes up for it.

I've gotten really into going to the cinema by myself lately and it's great because now I can watch all the films I wouldn't force my bf or friends to watch lol. Recently I saw The Favourite and Mary Queen of Scots (both in pic related). I'm a big fan of Saoirse Ronan, Margot Robbie and Emma Stone. I'd highly recommend both films because they've filmed in stunning locations, feature beautifully-made costumes and even though they're not entirely historically accurate, they were thoroughly entertaining the whole time. It's great to see so many good actresses and strong female historical figures on the big screen. If you're deciding between which to watch, The Favourite is a little ridiculous but fun while Mary Queen of Scots is very heavy but the acting is incredibly moving.

The trailers have me really excited for this year because it looks like there will be a lot of period films. Specifically The Aftermath (with Keira Knightly and Alexander Skarsgard) looks amazing and I can't wait to see it.

I loved The Favourite. It was so debaucherous! Dirt & mud, shit, vomit, sex, the words cunt, rape, power and control, huge ridiculous wigs and costumes I saw 2 separate people walk out of the theater. I heard the guy behind me ask his wife if she was okay, and she whispered back, "There's nothing funny about this." Olivia Colman's performance was fantastic. She portrayed Queen Anne's madness, desperation, and mental resignation so wonderfully. The part with the musicians playing outside and her screaming for them to stop was both hilarious and terribly sad.
I read that Yorgos Lanthimos took inspiration from the film The Draughtsman's Contract. Pic related. I watched it and it was good! I recommend it if you love period films. The pacing of the dialogue was very similar to The Favourite, as well as some of the costume choices.

It was because he said Nazis weren't so bad, or something. I've never heard of sexual abuse allegations against him, he's just a prick to work for.

The thing with Bjork and Dancer in the Dark was that he pushed her way beyond what she was capable of or trained to do and she had a sort of nervous breakdown when it was completed. Catherine Deneuve said shortly after the film came out that while she had no trouble telling LVT to get fucked, it was clear to her that since Bjork had no real training as an actress, she was never certain when she could say she wasn't going to do something, and so ended up doing everything in a part that was emotionally exhausting.

It's interesting. Out of all his leading ladies, I think Charlotte Gainsbourg has by far got it the worst from him in terms of what she needs to bring emotionally, and yet she seems to enjoy their collaborations a ton. Antichrist and Melancholia require her to be out of her mind for most of her screentime, and she's so good and so convincing in both.

Bjork has said many times that it was an awful experience for her. She gave every single take everything she had, which is a great way to make yourself sick. You mentioned Catherine Denueve (sp?) and that was her take on it, too. Bjork did win the best actress at Cannes so that's something.

Um, I guess I was wrong about LVT, sorry, I hadn't heard about this! Reading this made me super bummed out.

Sadly, there are lots of amazing films made by people who I think are complete wastes, like Polanski, but luckily films are such a collaborative effort that it's not too difficult for me to see those pictures as having been made by many, rather than by one. It's got to the point where I'll watch for cinematographers or costumers or set design if the director is really iffy.

Lynch pays homage to lots of classic film. He'll fess up to Godard, Tati, Kubrick, Wilder and Hitchcock but he'll leave out his direct influences. A friend of mine and I watched the Victor Fleming and Spencer Tracy version of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde the other night and we were blown away by how much Blue Velvet borrows from it, even down to casting Ingrid Bergman's daughter Isabella Rosellini in the sort-of-Ivy role. It's weirdly perverse for a studio film from the forties, too, much more than the actual pre-code from '31. I see David Lynch as the last great, almost stereotypically American filmmaker, coming from a certain tradition, but also taking that tradition and just twisting it like crazy into something unique and gorgeous. I think when he's gone it'll be a sad day for cinema.

Are there many classic film fans here? I watch a lot of TCM but also spend loads of time on Karagarga looking for foreign films. The selection there is incredible.

Got to see Alita last night! It was surprisingly really fun and the action scenes were very well choreographed and beautifully detailed. I also saw it in 3D so that probably added to it a lot. My favourite scene is the bar fight. I'm quite sick of the "fish out of water" genre but Alita adapts pretty quickly and I love how cocky and confident she becomes. I'm such a sucker for characters who talk like that but deliver on their promises lol. It's also just really nice to see female characters in sci-fi/action films that defy cultural expectations in general. The giant eyes kind of freaked me out in the trailer but didn't bother me once I got used to them in the film.

I've never read the manga (will now though) but you can tell that people working on it are fans of the source material because the characters are as visually accurate to their manga counterparts as possible and they tried to cram in as many references in the 2 hours they had available (sometimes creating loose ends but I'm hoping it gets a sequel? I'm also hoping that reading the manga will help me understand the world and plot points a bit better. Didn't understand who those warriors were even though finding out is Alita's goal throughout the entire film?). I think it'd be a fun film for anyone who liked Ready Player One, Blade Runner or Ghost in the Shell.

For anyone wondering about the dog, yes the dog dies. I wish I had known that before I went into it because it made me cry lol.

Baby of Macon is probably peak Greenaway but it's not easy to watch for a lot of people for obvious reasons.
What always gets me about his pre-2000 films is how he made a budget of crumbs and lint look priceless. His recent stuff kind of looks cheap unfortunately (there are more problems than visual) and there is no replacing Sacha Vierny, his old D/P.

Just watched Io. What a turd of a dystopian sci-fi movie. The melodrama is hoakey and just plain awkward. The acting goes from droll to over the top in moments notice, and the “couple” (yawn) have no chemistry whatsoever. Main actress comes off like a complete child yet we’re suppose to see her as a brilliant quasi scientist, and the male lead is a complete snore of a person who goes zero to a hundred and back to zero. The atmosphere and sets are really nice, the poor acting just immediately pulled me out and ruined my suspension of disbelief (“it’s too dark to travel” what??? you’re on atvs with friggen headlamps on them in a dystopia where everything has died including animals, just go if you’re pressed for time!!) I never found Anthony Mackie a bad actor, but I wanted his character to just die in the movie I cared so little about him or his tragic backstory. Margaret Qualley is someone I know nothing about, but if this is a testament to her true acting ability I give her a hard pass. I’m really hoping they just had shitty directing or a lackluster script.

Ok first off that pic is amazing. I can totally see the inspiration in retrospect.

As for the text post, not having thought about the implications of one's works is a huge red flag to me. It's somehow worse that they're supposedly unaware of how hateful the text comes across. Randy Moore is a good example of this if you have seen "Escape From Tomorrowland". Jenny Nicholson got me familiar with this film and it's a mess.

Maybe they think saying "oh shit really i had no idea" absolves them of responsibility? If anything it just shows how deep-rooted their issues are…

Just watched The Kindergarten Teacher. Wow what an uncomfortable film.
I'm not comfortable with the notion that children are "wise beyond their years"… it reeks of pedophilic agenda. Back to the conspiracy thread I go.
Overall it was very beautifully shot and Maggie Gyllenhal delivered an amazing performance. Idk why her titties have to be out in every film she's in even if I think it (they) played an important role in this particular film.

Idk if it’s actually a pedo thing (but then again, it is Hollywood) but I usually hate the “wise child” troupe. It’s so unrealistic and those types of characters usually come off very insufferable. Like Chloe Mortez’s character in 500 Days of Summer. Does anyone honestly believe a 12 year old girl is more wise and mature about romantic relationships than her adult brother? It was a good movie, don’t get me wrong but that shit annoyed the hell out of me even when I saw it in theaters as a teen almost a decade ago.

I think in some circumstances, kids can mature really fast in some aspects if they are in traumatic or stressful situations. Like an older child taking care of their younger siblings if their parents are too fucked up to. But even then, they still have the brains of children and any “they’re really mature for their age!” is pure bs (usually used to defend relationships between adults and minors).

Shitty writers write children that talk like adults. Most people imagine intelligent people to be psychic and impossibly computerlike. Aside from femme fatale, genius and wisechild are probably me least favorite tropes. Both signs of bad writing. Book of Henry unfortunately has both of these huge problems and I can't believe people greenlit it.

One of my favorite films is Trois Couleurs: Rouge by Kieslowski. It’s very atmospheric, artistic, and contemplative, and I find some of the themes intriguing (justice, love, fate vs free will). It’s one of those films you think about for a long time after seeing it.

I watched Suburra (2015), an italian movie on Netflix and it was surprisingly good for an italian movie.

If you dislike gore, lots of nudity, and extreme violence then definitely don't watch this.

It's a movie about corruption in Italy where politics, the church, and mafia are heavily intertwined. When a politician has sex with two prostitutes, one of them being underage and OD on drugs, it starts a chain of events that will unravel this grim, bloodthirsty world that is anything but underground.

It's not artsy and it's not deep. There's no good protagonist or someone who you'd root for (at least I think so), but it was an interesting thriller to watch. It had a fast pace except for wannabe lingering artsy shots on occasions, and it always kept me on edge with what was going to happen next.

I feel bad posting just a regular thriller in this thread full of gems but there you go.

I know that this was more than 2 weeks ago but I'd like to ask you or anyone else that saw the Favourite, what did you think of the ending? How did you interpret it?
I presume it's just Abigail's realisation that she locked herself in a golden cage where she's still a servant and Anne's realisation that Sarah was right. Now, all of them share a miserable existence.
The only thing that I didn't get was why Sarah looked so confident even when Abigail managed to expel her from the court and later country?

Also, I was genuinely surprised by the historical accuracy(except for the lesbian relationship).

Slightly OT, Rachel Weisz looks gorgeous!

I know people wrote about this movie how you don't know who to cheer because everyone's equally rotten for but to me, it was obvious that Sarah was the better person and genuinely seemed to care for the Queen.

And I completely agree about Olivia Colman's performance. I thought she acted the best out of the bunch (the entire cast was great).

No. 376403

>>376267
This is pretty much how I interpreted the ending as well.
I agree that Sarah was the better of the two, but it was still pretty depressing because she, too, was like a "pet" to the queen; made to be available at her beck and call. And likewise, she relished in and took advantage of the position she was lifted into as the queen's right-hand-lady and lover. So either way the relationship wasn't pure. I can't wait to give it a second viewing.

I love checking in on this thread.

To the anon who recced Kieslowski's Double Life of Veronique, props. It's one of my favorites and a gorgeous picture, great recommend! I brought another European film today, a good example of arthouse that's paced - let's say deliberately - but if you're in the mood for something different and are an old pro who loves sitting with a Tarkovsky film, you'll be fine here. I saw this after I had gone on a huge Delphine Seyrig kick and wasn't expecting what I got, but it's become one of my favorites and I rewatch it probably once a year. I'll warn anons up front, the run time is 3 hours and 45 minutes, so you've got to be in the mood for movie watching!

Jeanne Dielman, 23, quai du commerce, 1080 Bruxelles. It's absolutely a political film, but it's the politic that was present in films of the seventies, which is to say subtle and subtextual, my favorite kind. I hope someone enjoys it.

ok i watched 'eighth grade' and how did it get 99%? granted, it does make me like bo burnham a lot more. it was not porny or creepy or sexualized, and was actually very true to what being an 8th grade girl is like, shockingly. i also like that he's with a woman that's like twice his age so he gets props for that too. the movie itself was incredibly dull, however. i definitely went in with a very critical view of his ability to understand what it's like to be a teenage girl, so i'm really pleasantly surprised that he was able to create a piece of media about young girls without being a disgusting asshole. i also like the fact that it wasn't a typical indie 'wise kid' bullshit movie. the dialogue is natural and the characters are believable.
