Share any communities, hobbies, media that were ruined for you for various reasons.

Arthoes ruined art/art history community for me. In the past you were able to normally discuss various artists, but nowdays every 'art lover' only knows Van Gogh and Monet. At first I wasn't that pissed off, but when you ask about fav artists and pieces you only get 50 Van Goghs and 49 Starry nights, 1 Sunflower (if you are lucky).

And studying, learning community was ruined by all the bragging about what kind of brands everyone use. At first it was a nice idea, but now it's a contest who has the whitest table, who has more moleskins and cutest Kanken.

This will be weirdly specific but the Furby community.
First it was pretty much nonexistant as the old forum died due to some hosting errors. Fastforward a few years later and the furby tag on tumblr exploded and it's full of this shit. Which sucks as I fix Furbies for fun and I have to look through the garbage to find blogs focusing on technical advice. The furby fandom is full of genderspecial teens that were born too late to remember the original 1998 Furbies. Which is not an issue in itself, it's just that they are all so cringey and annoying.

Also the original booklet or online lore states that Furbies don't have any gender (so the new owner can decide on their own), so OF COURSE the genderspecials decided they are trans. Disgusting

k, I will shut up now, you get my point.

MLP was ruined for me too because of Bronies, good thing that they didn't decide to assimilate into the MLP Arena culture, but that's a story for another time.

I love collecting toys but it's so hard to find friends who are into the same thing and not unhinged to a certain degree.

This seems weirdly fascinating anon! What about ddlg community, do they meddle into furbies fandom too?

Tbh I hate when people bring up politics in non political communities, it just screams attention whoring.

I meant to shut up but found the beautiful reddit post about Furby community drama:

https://www.reddit.com/r/HobbyDrama/comments/8zpfll/furby_a_masterpost_of_furby_fandom_drama_youre/

In case anyone enjoys reading about crazy hobby drama - you are welcome.

For some reason, I have not seen much DDLG crap in the Furby tags (thank God). Maybe Furbies are not cute enough for them? Which is weird, as there are Furby babies, lol.
Thank God for that though.

>A bizarrely high amount of extremist feminists (TERFs, really) come into the furby tag on tumblr and spam fandom users with obscene images of gore and violence.

Call bullshit on that. The only TERF who is interested in Furbies and has any online presence is larpsandthereal girl and she would not post gore. Bet those were the trans sympathisers trying to blame terfs for everything, as always.

I'm not even against reasonable trans people if they decide that transitioning is the best way to go about their issues, but those 'ENBIES ARE VALID!!! KILL ALL TERFS!!!' kids are annoying.

Surely there are still genuine art communities and not just tumblresque hipster artists? I imagine you'll have to dig deeper than social media however and surf forums or more niche communities if you do look on Tumblr.

This is probably a less then popular opinion, but I actually preferred the anime community when it was completely made up of weirdos and autists.

I really hate how now no one is really genuine about liking it anymore. If you do you have to be "ironic" or at least pretend you have no interest in visiting Japan or learning the language. I hate how self-aware and shameful it's become. BACK IN MY DAY people were made fun of for not watching enough but now it's like everyone watches a little bit, but not enough to be one of those gross weebs ew~

Also tangentially related: cosplay. It used to be ugly, but passionate, people dressing like characters they loved, making costumes out of tape and thrifted clothes. Now it's all attractive girls doing the same FotM hot girl character. But the more time you put into cosplay, the less time you have to watch anime/play games. So I can't see cosplayers as dedicated fans.

I agree with you. The community used to be more self-deprecating in humor, people were self-aware that they were losers but didn't really care because they were having fun. Now it's all about "cringing" at others, having "good taste" and pretending to be an expert, or liking shit anime only because it's "ironic" or whatever. Having passion is almost looked down upon nowadays. The internet just seems more angry in general.
I don't really agree with the cosplay thing though, most cosplay (at least where I live) still looks like shit. Only difference is people buy from ebay or aliexpress instead of making it themselves. Attractive girls just get the most photos spread so they seem more numerous than they actually are.

i hate this too. all the people are just weebs trying to assert that they're much better than those other weebs, but they do the same shit. like i remember going on /cgl/ and seeing people criticize weeb pronunciation of japanese but then also were wrong themselves anyway. like why are they so smug?

I always though MLP arena was a bit cringe until FIM became a thing. Now when I say I collect MLP, people imagine an unwashed autist who jacks off to twilight sparkle and not a middle aged mom with a bunch of immaculately groomed plastic horses.

Kpop, used to be a small niche and was a casual listener and just watched simple music videos. Now its gotten so big especially with the bts shit to the point thst nobody takes a fucking joke.

People had fans back in my day, but we would still laugh about the stupid shit that our idols did an had no problem calling them out. Now if you do that people REEEeee at you and label you as a hater/ racist/ anti-x idol

Also twitter made this cancer worse 100x because 12 year olds would have multiple fan accounts just to spam shit

the LGBT comm
with all the new fetishists, snowflakes,…being super noisy i just cringe and wince in secondhand embarassment.
We just want to exist normally as discretly as possible without fearing to get beaten up (or refused jobs etc) and that's litteraly it but no,that's too little for those mongrels, they need to wave their ebay flags in the face of every passerby and talk about it every opportunity they have.
This also include neo trans who are 99% fakebois/traps,girls with interned mysoginy or guys taking their fetish too far. I can assure you the real 1% isn't like those entitled weirdos.

As a (biologically born girl) lesbian with friends of every variety, we honestly apologize on their behalf, we fucking hate it just like you guys do, trust me.

Ngl I kinda like the art how aesthetic/ the thrifted clothes mostly and I do like kankens but it can get really pretentious. I’m tired of seeing the same basic pics of people who looked like they haven’t showered in days wearing some aliexpress Van Gogh socks while holding cheap artists loft brushes or 3 copic markers.

>>275990
I think a lot of this has to do with the fact that anime is becoming more mainstream, which I’m gonna be honest I’m not really a fan of. Not because it’s ~muh secret club~ But more because the larger the fan base the more problems it has and gets out of control/as if the community doesn’t already have a ton of problems/
With that said I feel lately people are a lot quicker to move on from fandoms once a new shiny one arises. It’s kinda depressing and hard to keep up with.

Agreed 100% about cosplay. And conventions in general. Used to go to them every year but stopped around 2012/2013 because now its just a shit show for people with a passing interest. I really do miss hardcore fans, not quite autistic levels, but people who had a genuine love for the character they cosplay or their hobby in general

The youtube community is a complete shitshow, I mean there is some decent content but for the most part it's shit.
Shitty clickbait thumbnails and trying to make money off of controversies got old real fast.

Feel free to laugh at me, but teen me found the MLP community really comfy and cosey. It was a safe space for me away from whatever traumatizing shit I was going through. Everyone was so nice and there were many threads that made me happy, like the members reminiscing about their childhood ponies and the way thay came up with elaborate stories etc. It was nice to look at photos of toys and daydream about collecting them someday. I felt jealous (but in a good way) of the women who had loving boyfriends and families supporting their hobby.
There was no tumblr shit back then and it was so new to to see adults enjoying toys. It helped that the community was as undegenerate as possible, or at least I 've never run into any nastiness (though I mostly lurked and posted cute or weird bootleg finds).

It has always been very cringeworthy, I'm a fan of MCR but damn are their fans stupid and unbearable. (Frerard 24/7 for example, kill it with fire please) Also everyone who keeps sending all members accounts with MCR related questions and demands like Fuck off, they won't come back, as interesting as the theories sound.

>>276412 There's a recrudescence of critic channels from everyone and their mother too, it's almost half of my recommended on some days.

>>276415 It's not laughable anon, the community has just been plagued with the newer generations (and internet made it worse). The ddlg community appropriates lots of childhood toys, but you can find lots of websites on them (strawberryreef for every pony ever released, for example.) If you want, here's the vintage/childhood collectors thread, I eevn made a discord for it ! (link in thread)
