To be honest I think in today's youtubes climate you shouldn't expect that you can build a carreer that can replace your dayjob. Unless you come up with a really new, creative concept or have a quirky personality like Joana Ceddia that blew up last summer for nothing special. There's just too many channels now and viewers are spread too thinly among them.

Imo you should do it first and foremost because you enjoy making videos.

I've been watching yt on the daily since over 10 years now and I regret never having made videos myself. I'm close to graduating university and working as a teacher but if I had started at the age of like 16, I might be popular already. And that's important since I feel like family/friends/workplace will only accept such hobbies if you're really successful, otherwise it's only an embarrassment or even inappropriate.
I'm also currently in the process of losing weight and (if I succeed) I thought that maybe I could start out with an "How I lost X lbs", since those type of videos always get lots of views. My problem (on top of worries about others people's perception) is that I'm absolutely shit regarding anything technical, I neither own a camera nor do I know how to use photoshop or other editing softwares. Plus I'm ESL, but english videos are always more successful, so…subtitles or speaking with an awkward accent? No idea.
There are some asmr youtubers who never show their faces and still get millions of views, maybe that would be an option? I guess I'd prefer doing beauty stuff, but I'm also not good with makeup lol In the end, I'll probably end up never doing it.

He makes very valid points. Of course even if it's not going to be the corona killing of youtube, it'll be something else sooner or later. Everything that goes up must come down to some extent. But when or before youtube disappears, something new will emerge. That's how it always goes. I'm sure that next big thing that's gonna replace youtube will emerge this decade. If you're serious about an online carreer you need to watch the trends and make sure to be an early adopter. (take this with a grain of salt though, these are just my thoughts on it)

I think it’s dumb to base your whole career/income to one platform. There is no bulletproof plans for our generation but Youtube/instagram is very instabile platform.

I see too many ”influencers” whining about ”evil algorithms”. If you try to make your living in the field of social media then you play by their rules. They can change the game whenever they want and if it means that you don’t get visibility then it’s your loss.

I have never SERIOUSLY thought of doing youtube,but when I was younger I wanted to do those silly lip-singing videos that were the rage back in mid/late 00s at the beggining of youtube.If I made a channel now,it would be about sharing niche/obscure things I like,such as music or weird videos,retro/arcade video games etc.As a younger kid the reason I wouldn't upload videos was due to massive anxiety.Now,considering how stalking and doxxing are a big thing I wouldn't want to be known.Making videos about niche stuff wouldn't require me showing my face,but I'm definitely not the type to do a whole set-up,write a script and all that

Is it me or are you more interested in clout/views rather than doing something creative to express yourself?Not that people haven't jumped on youtube to get e-famous,but being in it for the fame alone will probably result you in making generic content following trends for the views,which can have success but you don't necessarily get a loyal following.The most successful youtubers either have a specific niche/content type that people keep getting back on,or a charismatic/interesting/relatable personality that keeps their viewers coming back,no matter the content and sometimes both of these things.

People to this day film on their smartphones and I can't tell.Unless it's some old,dated phone with not much capabilities you can pull this off.If the video content is decent people will watch(at least I do).It doesn't need to be 4k quality shit

There are literally SO MANY tutorials on youtube to learn and you can mess with them yourself.And the editing doesn't need to be top-notch or fancy-shmancy but at least make sense and the cuts be where they should

Accents are cute unless they are totally incomprehensible and you can improve that within time.There are people who aren't native english speakers and you can hardly tell they are foreigners and have started out with obvious accents.Making videos with subs wouldn't be bad as there could be people who want to practice whatever language you speak and need subs(I do this at times).Or you could also have an awkward accent with subs kek.Building a domestic audience though isn't that bad and there's less competition compared to the english speaking audience

The only concern of yours I can get behind is "what people will think" otherwise the rest of the stuff is manageable as long as you can get yourself down to put decent videos together

I'd like to get into the review side of youtube. At least I don't have to show my face and I can make a persona around a cartoon avatar instead. I can implements some animations too since people really seem to latch onto even the cheapest ugliest "animation"(slideshows) on yt these days. Realistically I don't expect it to be lucrative but I do really love reviewing media and it would be a good way to promote my art on other platforms.

I've watched YouTube since I was 9 and also regret not starting sooner, and I think this year I'll finally break into it. I remember when I was 12-14 I'd already worked with creating videos around these virtual world games I played, so I have basic experience. Although I'm unsure if I want to go full Art YouTuber, be Art and Lifestyle, or have two separate channels for both. Both have their pros and cons, for example I don't want to be stuck as just an art Youtuber since I've always found lifestyle content interesting and I want to really be able to share who I am with my audience, but I'm still unsure if I want to put myself out there as a public figure. Then I go on to the artist salt thread and realize that if people who can't draw and have horrible self-unaware personalities can start a community on youtube, I sure as shit can. So I just might. I'm still unsure, but I'm back to editing today since my plan is to pre-make my first 5-10 uploads so I have a consistent upload schedule to start with, then while those are uploaded I can work on future videos.

I was engaged legally to a youtuber, he quit to pursue a job that's outside the internet. If we had gotten married it would end in divorce anyway. The same YouTuber group he was from is stil going strong but he went no contact with his youtuber friends.

I'm being vague intentionally because it was only casual talking online, I was never close friends with all of the YouTube members, and even the one I got along with we never moved in together or finalized our marriage

To my defense, OP was specifically talking about yt as a career, meaning you'd have to be successful for that to work out. But you're right, being rich and famous by working a bullshit job like being an "influencer" (plus getting shit for free) would definitely be very nice, I always daydream about what it's like to have like a million fans who are interested in the most mundane things in my daily life, like sharing how you do your hair etc…lol But I also really love watching youtube (would do it all day if I could) and I also like asmr and know a lot about it, so it's not like I'd force myself just for clout. And like I mentioned before, a certain amount of followers is also kind of neccessary for public approval. Otherwise you're only the weirdo who posts videos of herself.
I feel like nowdays there's such a huge amount of female or gay male youtubers who are all doing basically the same beauty related content (like diet, skin care, clothes) and get by just fine with that. Or "funny" commentator channels who all talk about tiktok or bad tv shows. Of course I wouldn't wanna be a total sellout who scams her viewers but you also certainly don't need extremely high quality content to get somewhat relevant. Confidence and charisma is probably key.

I think that's the case for most successful older youtubers, who've been in the game since the beginning. That's also why I said that I wish I had started young. The ones who got popular recently mostly shot to fame fast and only do generic stuff. Not sure if somebody like Jenna Marbles starting out now would have made it, times have changed. I think now you need to be super polished and have everything very nicely editited. Even the ones who film with an iphone have ring lights etc.

I always try to see if there's some kind of magic formula of why some people get many viewers/followers, but no idea. For example just yesterday I saw this video of this gorgeous girl and one would think that she must've a million followers on instagram because people who look like her usually always do but she doesn't even have 100k (of course that's nice but not enough to live off). So what is she doing wrong? It feels so random how some succeed and others don't…

When I was a kid, I always wanted to be a scene girl youtuber. I actually made it kinda big back in 2009, but I get the creeps when I reflect on it.
I made a silly video when I was 13 with my then best friend about us ‘torturing’ her boyfriend (we were really just playing around) She and I bound him up with rope, duct taped his mouth shut and put him in the shower. Also, at one point during the ‘torture’ I removed my shoe and forced him to smell my foot, just being childish.
The video got almost 100k view very fast, which was a BIG number of views in 2009, but all the comments were gross perverted old men with foot fetishes.
At the time I didn’t really pay attention to the perversion and thought ‘o wow I’m famuzz’ and started making the classic emo kid type of videos like hair tutorials, being a nuisance in Target, etc.

I’ve since deleted the channel but thinking back always makes me wonder what could have came of it if I continued.

I kind of want to start making technical tutorials but my mic sucks and I'm kind of self conscious about my voice.

there's waaaaay too many gorgeous girls with perfectly edited videos on youtube now. You really need something special to stand out now. Kind of what Emma Chamberlain (or something) and those other quirky-girl youtubers did a few years ago; terribly filmed video's, bad lighting, subpar editing etc. but her personality and humor and funny editing made her stand out from the hoards of perfectly polished girls. Different enough to be interesting and youtuber-star-material but still relatable enough too.

I used to have a youtube channel (gaming) that was profitable, but this was years ago. it's a lot of work to make yourself stand out, regardless of your content, unless you make original things like animations. You'll also get way more pointless negative feedback before you'll ever get any meaningful positive feedback.
A lot of channels sit at 500 views per video and the creators get burnt out having to maintain a weekly upload schedule for months before they get any upticks in views. The market is flooded currently with cooking channels, reaction channels, internet drama channels, makeup channels, gaming channels, and vlogs about inane lifestyles. If you don't have the right content you'll just burn yourself out trying to get views.
I would not recommend trying youtubing unless you:
1. have a unique lifestyle that is worth vlogging, like homesteading, animal rescue, making unique crafts like soap, or are an artist, ect
2. do primarily comedy improv as there is a lack of decent improv comedians on youtube and they usually get popular quickly if they're good
3. make those lazily "animated" slideshow storytime videos, they always seem to do well
4. are an insane person and love just talking to your mic or camera for hours on end in your home and in public spaces and then spend hours editing content each day like emilia fart or something

if you aren't pretty and "down to earth" people will despise you over the littlest things and fuckups and will cite you over the stupist shit. people are eager to knitpick you all over the internet. this means you also have to be uber PC or your video may get swarmed by some SJW's from a twitter thread about your ableism for using the word "lame".

if you don't show your face it will put you at a disadvantage if you don't compensate with other appealing graphics, ie hand drawn images or very carefully edited videos. this is a video based medium, after all.

I use to be a vlogging channel back in 2013 and I became very popular, basically. I know this might sound cliche but do not fake a personality, you need to be genuine or else people will call out your bluff. Anyways, the job itself is not hard to do, yes you have be dedicated and avoid becoming a complete cow. Also, your weight doesnt matter if you have a good personality and have talents that would outshine any defect you may have. I left because I was overwhelmed and I really wasn't ready to leave my normal life behind and I had to choose between my day job and this… I got offers to move to Los Angeles but honestly the job itself stopped becoming fun and entretaining, it became more like a chore or something where you had to compete with others to see who gets the most views and likes. That wasn't the reason I joined in the first place. Like I said the job itself is not hard if you learn to be organized, but it can be mentally draining, so make sure you're prepared for that.

tldr; I was doing this for fun till it became emotionally draining and had to choose between this and my old life.

good luck, stop worrying about your weight if you have the charisma and the talent you'll make it, also be consistent.

nah they will either get claimed by viral hog or some rando company that owns the right to those. But they could be monetizable via sponsors like get someone to sponsor your vids, thats how many youtubers are doing money now a days via sponsors. cuz monetization on the platform is shit, you'll have better luck on facebook tbh. but lemme tell you facebook is pretty much the wild west so proceed with caution.
