Sorry if this thread has already been made, but I couldn't find it in the first 5 pages so hopefully this is okay.

Favorite Horror movies? Recommendations? What scared you when you were young, what scares you now, ect.

Staring off with this classic.

my first horror movie that i can recall
it fucked me up
i remember watching it with my cousins at night and then my uncle jumped into the room yelling''AAAAHHH!'' idk why i remember it.
i was 5
the part where the lady was swimming in the swimming pool or whatever filled with corpses was so bad
and i also started fearing those clown mascots i had in my room since watching that movie

"Housebound" is pretty good. It's meta af and funny.

"The Babadook" is great. It's pretty scary and it's also just a well put together movie overall.

I also enjoyed "the taking of deborah logan". I watched it thinking it would be shit but was pleasantly surprised. My only issue is that it lays everything out for the audience too much and doesn't let you put the pieces together on your own.

No. 82124

I don't know the title, and I don't think it's a horror movie, more like an artsy movie by a well known director. I forgot who though, but I remember the movie involves a girl whose eyes are cut off horizontally when she's not under morphine and then it shoot up a lot of blood afterwards. Even when I learned that the director didn't use any human eye, but some kind of a goat eye, I still find it traumatizing. I shuddered as I typed these, uuugh…that movie is the worst.

I really love Dario Argento's work. The Three Mothers trilogy is probably his best-known work, but my personal favorite is Opera. I also hear that Mana's a fan of Argento's work, there's a photoshoot he did during his Malice Mizer days that was inspired by the razor wire scene.

"Noroi the curse" scared the shit out of me, I also found the story really weird for some reason. "Shutter" (the thaï 2004 version, not the shitty remake) is great, one of my favourites. I also really loved "Blood Island", "The Babadook" (couldn't stand the fucking kid thro…) and "Rec 1".

No. 82206

The kid in Babadook was annoying as fuck, I couldn't get into the movie because of him.

No. 82217

The whole experience of the Blair Witch Project in '99 was really fun. The marketing for the movie was great and added to the spookiness of it.

Found footage/Mockumentary movies are a bit of a guilty pleasure of mine. >>82205 Noroi is great (that one crazy guy is adorable).
Alien Abduction: Incident in Lake County is a good '90s FF if you're into Aliens.
The Last Broadcast is another old FF/Moku that's really good until they kinda fuck up the end

Shutter (thai movie) was really good- the remake was not. The only remake I like more than the original (which is really good too) is The Ring.

Tales of Terror from Tokyo and fun little weird/spooky short stories. 4bia is another set of 4 Thai short stories (the first one got me good)

Babadook and Goodnight Mommy were both pretty disappointing to me. The Grudge series is pretty bad too.

No. 82219

I think that's sort of the point.

No. 82272

Saw the VVitch recently, that was great. Also a fan of Lake Mungo, Rosemary's Baby, and Sleepy Hollow continues to be one of my favorite spookys of all time (though I know it may not be scary to many people anymore.)

Japanese horror films I like:
Audition
Reincarnation
Premonition

And there's a Chinese/Singaporean (?) movie I really like called The Maid.

Also, I've been trying to find the name of this one movie I saw a long time ago. It was like a Korean horror version of Cinderella, except it involved plastic surgery and a dead(?) sibling.

I just googled it and YES! That's the movie I was talking about! I can't stand anything that contains eye or genital injury the most, maybe that's why I find the short film traumatizing.

The Descent
Ginger Snaps
May

Shutter is quite good, I just realised that Alone is from the same guys and I'd say it's even scarier.
I didn't expect such scarejumps and good story (I've been spoiled by western low quality horror movies). Definitely worth a watch !

I liked the aesthetics of Babadook and It Follows, except I wouldn't exactly classify them as horror movies.

Strangely, I really liked Unfriended, it was a bit dumb but it fit with dumb teens so it wasn't exactly out of the theme. I thought the execution would give me a headache but actually not, and I guess part of why I like it is that they took a risk and tried something new.

Any of you got recommendations for horror movies with a male lead? Preferably psychological more than gore but both can work. Love to see guys afraid and helpless.

No. 82565

Sinister (2012) was very good, still one of my favorites to this day.

Also seconding The Babadook and of course Ringu/The Ring, as well as some that are more creepy than horror/thriller that I really enjoyed: The Cell, The Conjuring, The Silence of the Lambs, and I actually quite liked Devil (2010, more interesting than scary).

I heard good things about Let the Right One in, It Follows, and The Gift but I still need to watch them.

>>82528
And speaking of, Sinister has a (likable imo) male lead. I also thought the cinematography was excellent and the lore behind it all was very interesting.

ginger snaps <33 my nigga

pontypool is excellent as well, uniquely executed concept

beyond the black rainbow and jacob's ladder are some of my favorites. a little more psychological than thriller. very intense. for a little less intense of a movie, i recommend the faculty. good clean alien fun. they live is a great movie too as far as sci fi.

suspiria, musically and visually, is worth a watch. story buildup = pristine. in my opinion the ending wasn't as horrific as i anticipated but still a very good movie in so many ways.

the people under the stairs is all around an excellent movie as well. i can't recommend it enough.

yes! quality film, the ending was perfect :D

i don't see many movies/shows that pull off this level of absurdity without looking half-assed. there was a childlike goofiness to it somehow, juxtaposed with creepiness. kind of like the movie adaptation of matilda or gilliam's tideland.

Bonus points for it being directed by Peter Jackson. Yes, that Peter Jackson.

Unfriended was a lot better than I expected it to be.

I loved the slowness, music and atmosphere of It Follows, even though the 'rules' of the haunt didn't make much sense.

Here's some more Asian horror movies I like:
Forbidden Siren
One Missed Call (typical dumb teen horror but I liked the first one)
Suicide Circle
Fu-Rai/White Panic
Uzumaki/Spiral
The "Kazari and Yoko" short story from the movie Zoo
A Tale of Two Sisters

Thailand makes some decent horror movies, though I gotta refresh my mind before I recommend any

Yesssss. Pic related is the only thing that genuinely scared me as an adult. I love it when a horror film sticks with you for days after you watch it. I'm still searching for another film that genuinely freaks me out, but I've yet to find it.

I'm so sick of shitty jumpscares and slasher films. Horror films these lately follow a really shitty predictable formula and I hate it.

i would honestly check out the indie horror scene! a lot of indie horror movies that ive seen are more psychological horror as opposed to typical jump scares! they arent all of the highest quality, but there are quite a few that explore some interesting themes

Dunno if you still read this thread but did you know that reincarnation and premonition are both part of a series of 6 absolutely great horror films? The series is called j-horror theater. The films are a bit difficult to find but i can definitely recommend watching them all. Infection is one of my all time faves along with reincarnation.

I'd recommend "Train to Busan"
(Busan-haeng).

Recommend any good psychological indie horrors?

No. 201495

I want to get into horror movies since i do find the topic interesting, but i really don't like jumpscares and gore, which crosses out most of the mainstream horror media.
I like more the silent hill (the game, not movie kek) type of horror that fucks with your mind rather than plain scary monsters, guts and jumpscare type.

Do any of you have some recs about some good horror films to watch that do not have jumpscares and gore?

No. 201500

>>201495
Horror movies with no gore at all is sort of hard to find but there are a lot that don't completely rely on it. Jacob's Ladder is always a good start for movies that fuck with your mind, especially since you like Silent Hill. The games get a lot of inspiration from that movie. I would also recommend:

Session 9
The Orphanage
The Others
A Tale of Two Sisters
1408
Hide and Seek

Just to start you off on. Try looking up some psychological horror films, they tend to have the mood you're looking for.

You had my curiosity, but now you have my attention. Will take a look.
As for me, the only horror movies that scared me (kinda) as an adult are
The Conjuring (both movies)
Dead Silence
Insidious
and that's it. Until Dawn genuinely scared the hell out of me, but it's a videogame (very simplified videogame where you only have to move and press the keys you see on the screen, but yeah) so I don't think it belongs to this thread

i like hidden a lot. babadook is actually pretty good imo. i know its a meme but aside from one jump scare it gives off really depressing atmospheres. a lot of people like vhs, but ive never seen it. also it follows has a few jump scares but i think overall is a pretty solid movie with a large sense of dread. at least imo. and hush is a good one. its about a deaf woman dealing with a house intruder. cant remember if its indie or not but its good one

I really liked the autopsy of Jane doe, it gave me vvitch vibes and I really enjoyed both movies.

Thought currently best Asian horror I saw recently was the wailing. It's a long movie but honestly I was really into it and I loved the ending. Made me really think about how I didn't notice the little things before.

But what are some other good Asian films that aren't the usual 10 people recommend.
I find most lists or movies people mention are the same few which I've seen and honestly I need something new and fresh.

also adding Martyrs ( the original 2008 movie - there's a lot of violence and gore, but i find it well worth it ), Gone Girl ( not horror, but a brilliant thriller ), Krampus, As Above So Below, The Lords of Salem, The Girl With All The Gifts, and 10 Cloverfield Lane.

if you're into obscure horror anthologies, i also suggest XX, Southbound, Unholy Women, and all the episodes from Masters of Horror.

My boyfriend and I watched it recently(and with some friends) and I really liked it! Mainly the whole uncovering slowly what happened to her. It didn't really spook me.

I've been on a scary movie binge lately, trying to find really scary movies. So far looking at articles online has left me.. empty.
The new blaire witch, the thing(both old and new). I'm looking for truly scary movies, they can be gorey but something to make me jump out of my seat.

Shit like IT, or Signs. Mainly the scene where the aliens walk out of the bushes at a birthday party makes me scream like a child.

There is a fucked up movie on netflix called Honeymoon. There's two on Netflix so pick the right one, but basically a guy captures a guy and forces him into a sex change to turn him into his dead wife. It's on another language.
