Heya art nerds! It's time for the second thread dedicated to everyone's favorite jealous, self-absorbed con artist and her beautiful all-ages watercolor comic, 7" Kara.

Becca Hillburn is an artist and art supply reviewer currently living in Nashville, TN with her living ATM/fiancee. She's behind the blog Nattosoup as well as her very own YT channel. Her primary claim to 'fame' used to be art supply reviews and field tests, but now she's most known for her bitterness and mediocrity. Egotistical and whiny to a fault, she'd rather sit back and play pretend art teacher to her 2-3 student workshops and sell 2 dollar prints at 12 cons a year than use her Masters to get an actual day job. Her primary personality trait is her two-facedness, presenting as a pleasant and helpful teacher upfront while harboring whiny resentment and bitterness beneath. She's also the artist behind '7" Kara' - an all-ages webcomic about Becca's ADHD self-insert ripping of The Borrowers and Thumbelina, rendered in muddy watercolors that she could totally do digitally. Becca shills the fuck out of this comic, going so far as to get physical copies printed for her to sell at cons and donate to lending libraries.

Previously
>Has been on YT for several years but even with her 'popular' blog cannot manage to break 10k subs. The vast majority of her videos hardly make it over 300 views.
>Nothing is ever her fault. Blames 'baby artists' and fans for depending on her too much without giving her anything in return (as in, not throwing money and love at her feet).
>Considers herself a watercolor expert despite her muddy, poorly-mixed colors and weak grasp on composition.
>SCAD alumni. Apparently didn't network enough to land an industry job out of school.
>Allegedly used to spend 7k a month on video editing - even though her videos are meandering, rambling, poorly shot messes.
>Obsessed art supply hoarder. Begs her fans to email art supply companies on her behalf to send her free shit then turns around to complain about having no room for any more.
>Goes on about her ADHD so far as to make an entire vlog series about how it sux to be hur guise.
>Actively resents her tiny pool of viewers and students, talking shit behind their back about how they don't support her enough.
>Made her obviously uninterested fiance 'interview' her at a cons… Just so she go on rants about how underappreciated and overworked she is.
>Has a hateboner for the online stationery retailer Jetpens.com (which she insists is an art supply store) because they refused to send her PR after she harassed them for it. Claims that she's single-handedly responsible for popularizing them, despite Jetpens being an established retailer before she started giving them 'free promo' at cons. She vagueblogs about them on a regular basis despite following their official social media accounts.

Recent milk
>Former friend of Kasey Golden and is very jealous of her success.
>Has made a name for herself on the con scene for her catty behavior and being the very portrait of Dunning-Kruger effect
>Claims that her struggle comic would've been more successful if it were written by her now-husband
>Launched 7" Kara vol. 2 Kickstarter
>Committed objectophilia by marrying her long suffering ATM
>Still can't paint worth a shit

Becca's presence as a thread here confounds me because she's such a non-entity. I'm not defending her at all, but for someone with only 3k followers on Twitter to apparently have garnered this much ire is unusual. Did she fall from grace or something, used to have a lot of followers and then lost them? I can't imagine her style is something that draws a huge crowd, especially at cons where people prefer the digital style nowadays. What even is her "claim to fame" if even her most popular youtube video has only 200k views?

No. 1014245

>>1014218
This thread started cuz she tried to start a flame war with jetpens claiming SHE was the one who brought them all their traffic so she should be compensated as such, like it was super obvious she was trying to either scam them for more free products as she had done like one review before, and/or is incredibly delusional of the skills and influence she has. It was pretty much both and then more came out about her shitty teaching and actually being a contributor on the very popular “How to Be a Con Artist” tumblr which she had very little relevant info other than how to sell $3 sketches at podunk anime cons in the Midwest.

Honestly if she just stayed in her lane and did the work, even tho she clearly isn’t doing it correctly nor is learning from her peers, instead of whining about how entitled she is to attention and fame because SHE has contributed to others and she’s the ONLY watercolor comic artist with her super original story EVER, she wouldn’t have a thread. This is lolcow and she pretty much is just full of cow behavior but without the audience. She’s entitled and bratty and thinks she’s owed fame and money cuz she bought a masters from SVA and she’s delusional to think that kids comics are some kind of niche market. Heck, her Kickstarter isn’t doing well but the average amount of pledges is like 45$. But her weird entitled bitterness is just prime cow behavior imo

No. 1014266

>>1014077
So if I were her like, it’s a positive she is able to reach as many people who have pledged now for her original work. Like the average is about 45$ per pledge which is a lot. But knowing her and knowing it’s gonna fail especially since she burnt a lot of marketing like months before the campaign launched, she’s not gonna take any positives from it. Better to let it fail and learn from it.

No. 1014331

>>1014077

Why did she choose the All Or Nothing option? I’m just confused, this is six years of her life here. What is she even going to do when the Kickstarter inevitably fails?

I'm still suprised how much she got. I wonder how much of it consists of family members she begged to donate? I hope she didnt make her husband donate, considering he did a lot of the work. He should be getting money for his effort too but I doubt he is.

No. 1014508

>>1014218
I've actually seen some of her viral resource posts end up on my twitter feed. I think she gets traction from things like how to be a con artist because she is so loud, insistent on self promoting everywhere and trying to insert herself into as many projects and discourse as possible to promote her comic, but it doesn't materialize in following or views.

It's surprising she got noticed for the wrong reasons being this small, but it only speaks volumes on how she comes across. Either way a lot of people that get posted here have or had when they were first noticed even less "fame" than her. PT herself is a good example, she got a hate following after posting a crying meltdown over not fitting into a dress but she had an average sized following on LJ at the time.

This is not a place to gossip about famous people, you only to be noticed by the wrong crowd and she tries too hard to draw attention to herself while acting like everyone owes it to her. Be careful what you wish for, I guess.

No. 1014736

For me, her videos keep popping up whenever I search for cheap product reviews - and she always does a terrible job displaying the materials. She barely uses them onscreen and doesn't explain much. Then her entitlement and astonishing lack of self awareness just draws me in

I think she says she prefers the all or nothing format of ks instead of something like indiegogo where you can keep whatever you get, because if she ks succeeds, she'll be guaranteed the money to go ahead with printing and shipping. If she does indiegogo and was stuck at $3k, she'd be responsible for still delivering on her book, just with less money to do so now.

She's unmedicated for some reason. And severe ADHD does suck to deal with when you are untreated. But there's no reason why she can't afford some 5 dollar generics of Concerta or Adderall or some shit even without insurance - it's just that she would rather spend her husband's money on shitty art supplies to make youtube reviews that no one watches.

It’s funny cuz there’s lots of comics about having adhd, it’s pretty prevalent in the creative field and I have no doubt she’s probably retweeted an ADHD alien comic or something. Some people can manage it without medication but she clearly can’t if it keeps affecting her like that, plus she’s from the south and I doubt she even has health insurance to get any treatment. But she’s made that her identity since she can’t be comics senpai anymore cuz people know more about manga now than she does.

>>1014984
Nah I think it’s like baylee Jae and her husband: we don’t know much about him but like, he’s not a helpless child he’s a fucking grown ass man so he could be just as awful or just likes to get stepped on or something.

>>1014508
She’s really the epitome of like, the opposite of “just be a nice person and do the work“. Like, indie comics is a small ass crowd of people and kids comics even more so, like people tend to work with the same agents and publishers so we all run in the same circles (especially now cuz a lot of traditional pub houses have started to get more GN titles onboard). Having a rep of being a bitter and entitled pill even as a no-name small fry artist is not good, especially since that’s what her personality comes across as in her publicly available videos. She’s already going to have a shitty time trying to shop her book to publishers since she knows nothing about kids comics so she’s digging her own hole by just being a shitty person

Wow. Extremely bold of Becca to give the winning prize to a piece of art that looks 50x better than everything. If 7" Kara looked like that it might actually be halfway endearing.

She mentions that she checked for contest entries via a single Twitter tag and ended up missing entries after she'd already announced the winner of the contest. She sent a consolation prize for the error, but I can't help but wonder why she didn't have an official email or somewhere contestants could submit without worrying about human error? Yeah it at least has proper perspective so everything looks like it’s laying on the table and a slightly more understanding of anatomy in that the black girl’s fingers look more referenced but jeezus Christ, have these two white women never seen a black person before like, they both draw her either like generic anime but I referenced dark skin(Becca) or like a scary white person with slightly brown skin (this person)

plus I also peeped her profile, her site leads to nowhere and she hasn’t posted any art except this after 2015 but also promotes “art reviews” so she’s probably an IRL friend of hers? Her IG has more watercolor and besides this, which obviously looks like she was trying to emulate becca’s bad use of colors, she’s a pretty decent watercolor artist. Never understood why some artists make the conscious decision to draw noses like this when it’s so distracting. I thought this was the actual drawing and was amazed it looked decent but then I scrolled back up and saw your edits are leagues better. Like the fucked up nose and mouth like has she even seen a person, especially a black person, before? She has this weird, “I don’t wanna be anime I wanna be UNIQUE” style that’s super offputting cuz the faces are all putty and no structure

This would be an ok rendering of a white woman if she just stopped too but I didn’t see it was supposed to be a black woman, no wonder the skin looks overworked to death when she’s layering that much color on top of paper that can’t take it. Like for someone that has so many colors in their palette too, can’t just start up with brown layers?

> Blaming the synthetic brush on the fact she doesn’t have control over the amount of paint.
> her paper starts buckling after one thin wash of yellow
> leaving the paint to pool before evening it out, making the overworking worse
>saying that she’s unusual for using glazing like it’s not one of the most common watercolor techniques.

No. 1024038

>>1023403
Dark skin is harder to render in watercolours, especially on lower quality paper. Mostly because with darker skin you want to be able to add extra washes to add depth. You can get away with cheaper paper for pale characters, usually, but with dark skinned characters the paper often starts speckling and doing weird paper tearing as you get towards a nice skintone.

I didn't even realise she did this sort of 'underpainting' for her art, because it doesn't show through. She'd be much better off just going straight into the dark skintone and shading from there to avoid overworking the paper. I guess she thinks she's a bit like Morgan Beem and can use underpainting as shading but boy does it not show or work for her.

No. 1024140

>>1024038
Right she’s adding all these extra steps with under painting while using a paper that is turning into mush cu it can’t handle it. She keeps adding these extra steps to be “unique” but they really aren’t, she’s just out of touch and trying to compensate for her lack of skill and storytelling

No. 1034720

Yeah like it’s strange to park a UHaul there for weeks to load when people do just that, rent it just to move on the last day. She is completely blind to the fact she comes across as a stuck up know it all, like I really think she does interview badly in that she’s probably open about not wanting to work at a non-art job for money and not tailoring her interview in getting a job. Like a retailer doesn’t need to know you’re gonna dip immediately once you “make it”, they want to know if you’re capable of selling and working at the job assigned for as long as possible. She has this complex where she thinks she knows everything and deserves to be rewarded for it when clearly, her art clearly is lacking and she refuses to learn from others, not really appealing to people hiring you.

It’s pretty normal tho from the responses to the tweet to have partners or parents that support you in the early stages in your career while also working, a lot of artists come from money as well as various other advantages, but it’s really funny she thinks her work is equal to that when she clearly doesn’t know her market both for kids comics and for YouTube. She’s “working”, but she’s working in her own closed circle and not expanding because she thinks she’s a master of her art and demands to be compensated for that when like her entitlement into being rewarded for putting in the work is exactly why she’s not getting work
