Meh, I still don´t get it. Even in places where the people are in lockdown they are still allowed to get groceries. People who are in quarantine will receive help if they need it (that´s how it is here, I would imagine that other European countries or the US are the same), so they also do not have to worry. And while I can see why people buy loads of food, seeing how that´s just a basic things for survival, I do not get the tp thing. Not only do these people buy far more tp than normal people would be using over the course of 4-8 weeks, but there is also no real horrible consequence if they run out. Even in quarantine, the water will be running. Besides: Why only tp, why not similar products as well? That is so weird! I am in Germany, and the shelves where the tp was are completely empty, while the shelves to the left and to the right, the ones with the tissues and stuff, are basically full. And people are such idiots: They worry about needing a shitload (haha, what a pun) of toilet paper because they could be locked down or quarantined, but they will go into stores full of people, standing face to face with them to fight over the last rolls of tp, which might very well be what will get them infected and put into quarantine to begin with. It´s super pointless, irrational and actually quite irresponsible.
This isn´t a war or a big natural disaster, where huge numbers of people die and the factories are destroyed. Worst case will be that some factories will be shut down for a short time and then production can start again. If, at any time, there is really going to be a toilet paper crisis, it is going to be an artifical one, created by the very people that worry about it the most, buying up way more than they actually need.

The first corona case was confirmed in my county several days ago and the panic buying kicked in immediately. First sanitizers, then TP and water, and now nonperishables plus other grocery items, and immune care. There’s lines at every store you can buy this stuff from, and gun shops are busy too. I work at a grocery store and have witnessed this first hand. It’s a specialty store and a lot of customers who typically shop at big box stores have started coming in to stock up. Yesterday was the wildest shift of my life, and we were still understaffed despite having every register open, multiple people working in departments, multiple call ins/help from other stores, overtime approved, etc.. The online pickup queue backed up. Almost all of the fresh produce we had yesterday is gone. Potatoes, onions, tomatoes, bananas, completely wiped out. Meanwhile I still see boomers coughing open mouth all over the canned bean shelf.
Also, we’ve had dreary weather the past few days. Even though retail is busy and school kids are out for spring break, it seems eerily quiet and still, like our society is shutting down.

Hey anons. I just wanna remind everyone to keep their gas tanks full in possible. It's good protocol in a disaster scenario to begin with but someone in my family heard through a reliable source that law enforcement in our area is getting prepped for a scenario where they're shutting down gas stations to curb people traveling so much. I'm hesitant to post my location because I'm already paranoid about glowies showing up at my door but I will tell you I'm in the US. Hi anons, I've seen in these threads and elsewhere online that people are upset that shows are getting cancelled. I'm upset too. I'm a stagehand and all these cancellations mean I have no gigs for the foreseeable future. This coming payday will probably be my last until the summer, and that might be the best case scenario. Everyone I work with is fucked. It almost pisses me off to see people complaining about not being able to see their favorite artists when my coworkers are worried about being able to provide for their families, but I understand that it's still an inconvenience to everyone. I really hope things return to normal as soon as possible so concert-going anons can have fun and I can pay my bills, but goddamn this is scary.

This pandemic is scaring me so badly, not simply because of the virus itself but because it puts me into another potentially catastrophic situation. I used to be a heavy drug user and I am in a methadon program. It works great for me: I´m happy and healthy, I am clean and haven´t touched any drugs (not even alcohol or cigarettes) in years, and I am working and taking good care of myself. Where is the problem? I asked the nurse at the clinic whether the whole virus situation could have any effects of the methadone program, and she said that yes, it could: If staff gets infected, the clinic will shut down and there is no official plan B - This would mean no more methadone being given out, the clinic would be shut down. For how long? She can´t say, after all, there is no plan. While I am sadly not suprised, I am seriously frightened. I talked to my counsellor about this and he called local health officials and told them that there is a huge problem here that needs to be looked at and taken care of asap, and they assured him that they would do what they can to make things right and keep everyone taken care of. I have, however, dealt with these things for long enough to know that in the end, when it really comes down to it, this is the very last things that anyone is going to work on and try to fix. We´re just a marginalized group, and one of the most unpopular ones at that - this is certainly not going to suddenly improve now. So this being said, I am fucking scared. I am scared of being thrown into massive physical withdrawels and I´m scared of the long-term consequences that this could result in. Methadone withdrawels feel like you are floating around in your own personal hell, even withdrawing from Heroin would be a better deal. And not only is it this physical and mental hell, it´s all the chaos that unfolds when you are trying to escape it, which, at some point, you most certainly will. The nurses at the clinic are taking a bunch of precautions to prevent that they get infected, and I hope and pray that there will be a good soluation to this problem and that, at the worst, the clinic will be shut down for just a couple of days, but anything could happen and we have no control over it and this feels horrible. Idk why you don't just look up what Wuhan's market was like and why was it dangerous. But long story short, wildlife animals that are catched and bred without proper regulation and proper vaccines, are stacked in cages all over the place. The wildlife animals in the lower cages are soaked in everything from feces, blood, pus and mucus, that drains from the upper cages. This allows for any sort of bacteria and viruses to jump between species and mutate.
These animals are either slaughtered on site or sold alive, and then eaten by humans.
Also, out of the first dozens of cases of covid 19, most of them had Wuhan's wet market as a common factor.
Not every Chinese person eats or sells wildlife animals, but still, it is a huge industry. It's not the first time that dangerous viruses have been bred in these markets, so these people are continuing to grow this industry despite knowing that they are putting everyone at risk, and the Chinese government knowingly allows it for profit, despite the many campaigns over the decades demanding to forbid these activities for the high risk they represent.
I don't think every single Chinese person is to blame, but I do hope that the world makes the Chinese government pay for this.

I’m personally constantly flip-flopping between paranoia and rationalizing.

Then again I really want to trust into the fact that there haven’t been any (relevant) cases in my city. Plus, even though my immune system is shit I haven’t had a serious flu in years, mostly because I’m super paranoid about germs all year around.
Still. I feel so helpless. Especially because there’s still so many people not taking it seriously and who simply don’t give a fuck.
I think I’m gonna stay at home for two weeks or so and hope for the best.

I was poking fun at the mentality of those nurses and health workers posting long rants on social media for attention, based on their own limited (if direct) experience, regardless of the accuracy of what they're saying or of how it might contribute to more fear. It's a 'human' behaviour for a person to want to share their own expertise or experience, but that's part of the problem in the cycle of hysteria I'm pointing to. I made a comment about public figures wanting to be important, too.
I mentioned the loss of time spent on this very topic, but haven't I provided a better service to my fellow sisters by writing something that exposes runaway fearmongering? Calling for calm and reason, and critical reading of what health officials and governments were doing earlier on could have helped a lot. If all the time spent by people over the past month or so feelin anxious, worrying, watching the MSM had instead been invested in basic solutions and improvements to society - WITHOUT the hysteria and loss of freedom - the world could be a much better place.
Let me repeat a suggestion I'd made previously. What if we called for tech company leadership in publish for inbuilt digital 'signature' apps in everyone's phones, so that parcels and food deliveries could be received without touching pens or touchscreens? Or called for tech company leadership, or subsidies or something to encourage the adoption of 'True depth' technology from iPhones in supermarket and airports instead of touchscreens? People could literally 'press' a button in 3D space without touching anything. I don't think touchscreens are THAT much of a factor in transmission, but it might be a small one, AND who knows - it could have flow-on effects like leading less people to unnecessarily buy up hand sanitiser or something. Or we could be investing that time in encouraging veganism and making it cheaper and easier for people in China to adopt, so that outbreaks like this are less likely to start. We are talking about billions of lost hours here.

If small and medium sized businesses start to default, it will be a nightmare. Individuals are not going to be able to start businesses to replace the ones we lose immediately. No one will have the money to take out a business loan and start hiring people. Newstart is a pittance and many people will be forced onto it.

I was planning to use the remainder of my back pay to travel to Europe in 2021 but here we are.
I am a musician and DJ and music has been my life, all of my life. My homelessness journey was a very Buddhist journey. I lost nearly all of my belongings including my music collection which, at the age of 49, was massive. Rare autographed books, original art, collectibles. I decided I was done Buying All The Things and want to spend my $ on experiences and time with friends. Attending concerts is at the top of my list. One of those tickets was for my bff whom I met in the shelter.

SSI is welfare for disability based on income. I don't qualify for SSDI because I was self-employed as a sole proprietor and hence did not pay into SS like people who are employed whose payments are deducted from their paychecks. Additionally I did not have quite enough work credits when I did apply (if you are working you are required to apply for SSDI before you can apply for SSI).
