Friendships are overrated. I see people here wishing they had more/any friends and saying how meaningful they are, I even used to be like that myself. Then I actually made friends, and no, they didn't improve my life. It's fine doing things together, and I can enjoy hearing their perspectives, but I can't think of any scenario where I wouldn't have had just as much or more fun doing whatever activity on my own because I could go at my own pace without having to take another person's wants into account. I'm just as amused hearing a stranger's opinion on a topic I'm interested in as I am hearing a friend's. It's a drain to have to think about how often I need to contact and do things with them to continue being considered a good friend. Over time they tend to weaken and dissolve just as much as any relationship, often more so, because most people will ditch you entirely no matter how close you were when they get a partner. The biggest benefits that come from having friends are having someone available for free house sitting, someone to call the police if you were ever kidnapped and a name to put as your emergency contact. Considering I don't have any pets to take care of at home and I'm not averse to death (not seeking it, but not terrified by it either) all the effort to maintain friendships for the sake of those things is pointless to me. I've become the happiest I've ever been when I started priotizing, loving and caring for myself, even being a bit selfish. When you're your own best friend, being alone is restful and fulfilling rather than sad. I've always been a loner and I used to feel badly about that, not because I actually felt unfulfilled, but because society kept telling me I needed friends to be happy. Many early fujos became proto-TiFs, but it was also a time when the film industry was full of gross frat movies like American Pie and music became extremely sexual with acts like the Pussycat Dolls, mainstream rappers, Fergie etc.
You were sent the message that you will be ogled, called a skank and preyed upon if you dress feminine and conform. Being a dumb bitch was popular and if you didn't fit in or you liked any kind of alt clothing you were just ugly and deserved to be bullied by other girls because that must mean you think you were better than them, the y2k equivalent of lolcow anons calling posters NLOGs. As a girl, there was no winning.
Eventually Tumblr came along, and then Twitter, with an ever-growing concentration of Aidens per website.
The difference is that you were bullied and ridiculed if someone clocked you, but on the flipside it was so uncommon to be 'trans' that you passed for a prepubescent boy a lot easier. My parents told me it was just a phase but ultimately agreed to buy me boy's clothes to make me more comfortable with myself, which I was grateful for. I don't really get people who are like "I get along so much better with animals than humans!" I say this as someone who loves animals (I've been volunteering at a wild bird rehab these last couple of months) but don't like personally interacting with a lot of them. I get the feeling that these kinds of people can't tolerate disagreement/criticism or not getting their own way.
