What is an otome game?
>An otome game is a romance-focused game within the wider genre "joseimuke", meaning female-targeted games, and feature unlockable illustrated images known as CGs. The player character in otome games is always a female protagonist and can make choices to pursue male love interests over the course of the story. Otome games, or "otoge" for short, are most often text-based visual novels, but they can also be stat-raisers, rhythm games, or JRPGs.Possible Discussion topics

Guys, I'm currently playing Olympia Soiree (I'm on Tokisada's route rn and already finished Riku's) and I tried to find this info everywhere but I can't. Is Akasa's or Himuka's route longer than the other ones? I thought Riku's route was actually really quickly paced.

>>473374oh, that makes sense, thx, nonna! i tried looking it up and got a huge spoiler about himuka's route by accident so i was scared in trying to look more
>>473383i'm liking it!! it's not really my favorite otoge and i totally understand not being able to get totally immersed in the world because lowkey the color class system is just convoluted and dumb. i hate when they do this in general actually - introduce themes in the game to put in the most basic social commentary in the world and then we have to spend hours on end having to see the characters come to the unprecedented conclusion that omg racism is bad!!!11!1
with riku's route i felt like there was also an issue of olympia falling in love too fast?? like
she watches him dance once and eat a sandwhich and suddenly she's head over heels in love with him so it sort of fails the "enemies to lovers"-lite arc that it's supposed to be. however, when they get together it's super cute, specially the scenes where olympia teases riku, it's adorable how easy it is for him to blush/get embarassed so my main complaint is that there wasn't more of that teasing in his route
i also really liked that, in riku's route, shura is portrayed in a really nuanced manner? she's opposed to olympia marrying riku because it's a threat to the power of the blue clan (bc olympia can only bear children who are of the color white, and the blue clan needs more "blue" children who can wield batsu since its the main source of their social standing) and she's sort of a bitch to olympia but she's also someone who has to deal with both being a leader of a primary color class and being a woman at the same time, so she's both an enemy to olympia, trying to get in her way, and also trying to improve the social standing of other women in the island, making a new school so that they can actually learn. i thought that was an interesting conflict and i like that shura ends up wielding to olympia without turning into a full fledged villain bc i was afraid she would just be the designated bitch older woman of the castwith tokisada i'm still not done but the pacing is a lot better imo maybe bc they start out as very believable friends in the prologue and there's more scenes of them together. i'm not that into him tho i dont mind the young looking boys but eh the constant "onee-san" is annoying. himuka's and akasa's routes are the one i'm most excited to play

>>473442i got too busy to play when it released and then was never able to catch up, but in general it shares the same issue that i have with LADS and other similar games: i hate that romantic progression is stuck on character cards and do not affect the main story
that makes it so the relationship's growth feels confusing and you could be marrying a character in a card and going back to treating them ambiguously in the main story
i like the gameplay and mistery aspect tho and vyn and marius are my favorites but all of the LIs are cool

>>473678Besides, for the millionth time, it's just fantasy, and these fictional men don't have to think like real moids who might be closeted faggots in real life, so if the author says they're 100% heterosexual, they are, because they're not real.

I would recommend playing older games before the gendie brainrot truly took over. When I was younger I played many flash based games that looked simple but had god tier writing compared to today's slop. Let me namedrop some creators whose works I enjoyed. (picrel is from Saccharine: A Misleading Sim Date)
>AmiraloShe used to make dark, often tragic stories that had morally complex characters. Most of her older stuff was flash based but she did release one game on itch.io in recent years (it's a bit gorey and horror-like despite the otome category, though). I highly rec Reverie, where adabanas grow and saccharine if you're ok playing games on flash (I explained how here
>>>/m/411496)
https://amiralo.newgrounds.com/https://amiralo.itch.io/ityh-a-horror-otome
>ROSEVERTEI've been playing her games since 2010ish and her style has changed a bit over time. In the beginning she used to make more psychological and less fluffy games that took more risks and I liked, but in the recent years she has moved to more wholesome cute games like her "how to …." series (because of market demand probably). I think she is originally JP based.
https://roseverte.net/en/games.html
>Hanako GamesHanako's game studio is kind of a wild card, I remember liking a few while finding others (some of the new ones where probably collaborated with others) garbage. But I think Magical Diary: Horse Hall is really worth playing, it was ahead of its time. Fatal Hearts and Date Warp were fun in their own way (the character designs are kinda amateurish but the stories make up for them imo)The royal trap is good but I remember gendies reeing at how the game handled one character's parental abuse backstory, kek. Iirc the game didn't call that character trans at all, but gendies appropriated him
https://www.hanakogames.com/
>WinterwolvesUsed to make otomes with a very western feel but nowadays have more coomery designs I don't like. At least it seems like the games are still mostly female oriented. Out of the early games I remember playing the Heileen series, the stories were politically incorrect in a way today's games could never. Loren the amazon princess was set in a matriarchial society which was fun, and you could play the game in sexualized mode where both men and women dressed very scantily lmaoo. The flower shop games were also fun, but the first one wasn't otome (it had a male mc whom you could woo in the otome sequel).
https://www.winterwolves.com/pc_games.php
>ZeivaI played X-note and Area-X by Zeiva which were equal parts mystery and otome. Their art is always very clean and unique, and the stories tend to be serious and tragic (I'm still salty over Dragon Essence's sad ending). But they have also made some parody otomes like Other age 1,2 and Cliché.

>a2 ~a due~>The Rose of Segunda>Yrsa Major (more of a kinetic novel)>Cinders (cinderella retelling, art detailed but slightly odd proportions)>The Deep Unknown (like a shounen adventure with mermans but otome)Miscellaneous recs:
>RE: Alistair (my first ever otome, very polished for a free game)>Locked heart (same creator as Cinderella phenomeon, cutesy art but pretty solid story) >Halloween Otome (and maybe other stuff by Synokoria but I haven't gone through them myself yet)>Summer found me (only reccing because of Seth, I love him)>Please Don't Hate Christmas (single LI, rare yandere boy that I liked, nice twists)>Crimson Spires (very nice voice acting and interesting setting but some route writing was crap, true route ruins everything)>Changeling (I found it interesting because I love fantasy and appreciated the worldbuilding a lot, but the art can give uncanny valley sometimes. Also I only played one route so can't speak for all routes)>Dawn of the Inverted Soul (more like a horror with marginal otome elements, amateur art but complex and interesting plot, had massive number of dead ends that I enjoyed, lol)>>474214Thanks
nonnie! Happy to see another Amiralo fan out in the wild. Have you played What’s Your Name? Amiralo did the art for it, and while it had a different writer and wasn't god tier psychological midnfuck for me like old Amiralo games were, it was still pretty good.

>>476234Manga like this one is just proof that the genre is getting worse and worse. It doesn't necessarily mean that the potential readers were asking for it, just look at the ratings. I think they were just trying to chase a shitty trend that can be seen in TL manga these days. Speaking of which, TL manga artists have to follow certain cucked guidelines most of the time, it's likely that whoever is in charge at Pure Wool told the artist to draw the most moidgaze piece of crap imaginable.

Can prospective otome devs/writers use this thread to get opinions on whenever a certain story/character idea would be good or interesting for their target audience, or is the game dev thread a better place for it?
R/otomegames would probably be a better place to ask as well but that subreddit is kind of a shithole and I respect my fellow nonnies opinions more. My game is also kinda niche and dead dove do not eat in concept the MC doesn't get abused by the LI's though, don't worry, so I'm not really making it with reddit normies in mind.

>>477350>>477365Thank you for your input, nonnas! My question is how receptive would otome audience be to an LI that's a
cannibal, would that be an immediate turn off for you? His route is probably the most
toxic one because it's focused on the LI wanting to morally corrupt the MC, there isn't a weird maledom aspect to it though, he's actually kind of a masochist.
>>477385Well it's a historical, dark fantasy so it needs some dark themes. I'm honestly a little afraid of coming across as edgy and tryhard but scrotes get to have their schizo, gorey, waifu VN's, so I don't see why women shouldn't get to have that as well!
The LI's aren't really
abusive because the MC is a knight/mercenary (depends on the route) and pretty capable, it also doesn't really make sense for their personalities. One of them is a deeply religious, borderline Christian anarchist "everyone is equal under God" type, the other is a really repressed and high-strung autist that measures himself buy a strict code of conduct (knighthood and all that). And the third one is admittedly kinda emotionally
abusive because he's a manipulative asshole and a compulsive liar but the MC eventually puts two and two together and calls him out on it, he wouldn't hurt the MC though because she's the only person he really feels a kinship with because of plot reasons.
He's the cannibal one, truly the worst boy. It's actually mostly a story that's loosely based on the historical Bohemian Wars and the apocalyptic parts of the Book of Revelation, most of the themes center about religion too. I even went as far to name the main, cannon LI "Huss" after the historical figure Jan Huss kek. No. 477548
>>477447I really like your idea nonna! My advice is to go for it regardless of what others think. You'll always get your audience. It's your story and you should write whatever you want. I think it'd be better asking stuff like the pacing or writing of certain things like how to insert them etc. instead of "is this ok for you" bc you'll always find people who aren't into it, mixed opinions. And honestly just write whatever the hell you want, and ignore "that's for moids". I know a shiton of women who enjoy eroge but hide it bc they're named as degenerates/moid taste. The secret is to enjoy something and make it for you even if you weren’t the target audience. I love seeing moids seething for examples, now that their eroge mcs aren't ugly but instead sexy and have vas bc women joined their hobby kek.
Avoid posting on Twitter or reddit for opinions at all costs, because the first thing that they're going to ask you is if your mc will be gender choice, if there will be any queer lis or if you include any black/fat/trans LIs in. Just be careful nona and good luck. You can ask ebihime too if it's not your first otome project for dev advice.
No. 477562
>>477447While it doesn't sound like something that totally panders to me, I would try it anyway. I'm tired of dark romances typically involving the MC being physically abused so I'm more interested because you aren't going that route.

>>477447> My question is how receptive would otome audience be to an LI that's a cannibalNona, no joke, I browse the
cannibalism tag on VNDB at least a few times a year trying to find new games I might've missed
(I like the trope for its horror elements; I'm not weird lol). I am your VN's target audience. Also worth noting there's a pretty popular OELVN otome with that as a major theme, too, and that hasn't impeded its popularity at all, so I don't think I'm alone in this.
>Well it's a historical, dark fantasy so it needs some dark themes. I'm honestly a little afraid of coming across as edgy and tryhard but scrotes get to have their schizo, gorey, waifu VN's, so I don't see why women shouldn't get to have that as well! I'd personally enjoy this. There needs to be more dark and plot-centered otome games overall. It feels like, in a lot of communities, what passes as 'dark' in the otome world is different from typical VNs or BL games. It's sad because I genuinely think there's an audience for this type of thing. I'm 100% on board with this, and 2/3 of the LIs sound like my exact thing. Out of curiosity, how long would you anticipate it being? It sounds like an ambitious project, so I'd assume pretty lengthy? Also, with regard to the
apocalyptic thing, are you planning on a tragic ending?

AYRT to both of you and apologies in advance for the long post.
>>479658It's been a while, but off the top of my head:
>The entire plot is centered around fairytale-themed gang violence. Despite this fact, the MC has absolutely no self-preservation instincts. It's not the regular "uwu I'm so innocent and naive" type; this girl acts like she has a death wish at times. This is semi-justified by the fact that she's a brick-and-mortar tower brought to life and thus doesn't understand most of the world.>A lot of the editing choices are just plain weird. There's a particular jingle that plays at every fucking scene transition. There are also really weird cuts just in the middle of the story; some would call it a 'pacing issue.' I would not call it that because I thought it was funny. >There are cheating options where the MC can just cheat on her boyfriend in the middle of a normal route and start dating one of his friends/coworkers.>There's a route where the MC starts going to a brothel and hiring male prostitutes. The owner of this brothel is the local priest who also moonlights as a pimp. This pimp/priest is also Dorian Gray from the Oscar Wilde novella. Also, in one of the endings, you, the player, get to rename him. I won't explain how or why, but this entire route had me staring at my screen in disbelief.>In the true route, the story completely abandons its initial premise and turns into a battle royale where all of the characters start trying to kill each other. Three of the side characters form a literal suicide pact at one point. I really cannot do this part justice but it was the highlight of the game for me.This is far from an extensive list, but the entire game felt like a fever dream. I kind of look at it like a trashy romcom or something? I didn't just enjoy it for comedic reasons; the true route was so legitimately good in a way that a lot of otomes I've played don't manage. For me, I'd rather read something interesting and funny with some rough patches than something that's good on a technical level but dull.
>>479646From what I've seen, it's because there's two particular routes that get weirdly dark/kind of depressing, which people don't like for understandable reasons. One of them is explicitly written to be fucking insane and you have to go out of your way to get it; the other one is one of the side route guys being a unique brand of awful. Additionally, people hate the cheating mechanic, even though there's a non-cheating route for every boy. Like you said, the MC also has an IQ slightly below room temperature. There's actually a lore reason for her stupidity, and she's written TO BE stupid, so it didn't bother me. It's not as though she's making these dumbass decisions and nobody's calling her out on it. It's also written in a humorous way, so I felt like I was in on the joke rather than it being poor writing. I like dumpster fires, though, so when people say they hate it, I don't blame them.

> tiktok speechunfortunately, the cringe tiktok meme-isms do continue,
especially for Quill’s route, he’s basically a stereotypical sassy gay man trope but it’s tolerable imo. Outside of his route, the cringe is negligible.
>gendie stuffyou can choose themlet pronouns for MC, but that’s as far as it interferes in the story. All the other characters/LIs are normal guys or girls. If there are themlet NPCs, I don’t remember them and they weren’t important. However, there are some minimal typos/mixed up pronouns where sometimes girl MC is referred to as he/him on accident (you know it’s a typo because in the same sentence, female pronouns are also used).
>sex in gameThere is some mildly steamy content in the main game, kissing, fondling and the like, but the characters never get fully nude. From what I remember, you can have sex with your LI, but all the sex scenes are fade to black. To me, the male MC has somewhat more racy CGs and dialogue options than female MC.
I think it’s because BS originally started as a BL webtoon and female MC was added later on, but idk for sure If you want explicit sex and nude scenes in game, you’ll need to get the Harlots DLC, but I wouldn’t do that until after you play through the original and see if you like it.
The game definitely has its faults, but for the most part, it’s a fun time and the MC isn’t a complete moron. I hope this helps you decide nona!

Girl doesn't take anyone's shit and can do literally anything she puts her mind to lol. The LIs are scared of her cuz she teases them so much, kek. Alice in particular - she follows him wherever she goes and pins him down if she needs to, she will say whatever she thinks and does whatever she wants without any concerns.
She's still a kind person, but my favourite part of her was her major flaw that she was more self centred than the game would let on. Cuz she seems so perfect, but she will subtly persuade people to make them do what is needed for her goals. Hell the story itself is wild but I can't talk about that cuz MAJOR spoiler
BTW I played the jp version and recommend everyone to play it as well. I originally started with the English version but the tl was BAD like downright awful, see picrel from previous thread. The actual story of the game can be very heavy at times and even there localizers just fucking had to throw in jokes. Also they made yurika too casual, in JP the best part about her shitting on people was that she did it politely.
