Finally, a thread for me. I like playing Boyfriend to Death clones and this one's whole thing is that (you) are a murderstacy this time and kidnap guys to torture. There's one interesting route where you kidnap a sheltered cute boy who grew up in a cult and then there's picrel, the obese ugly uno reverse card route that pissed me off because he overpowers the MC and puts her in the victim position. So we don't even get to kill him in a game advertised as being a reverse murder sim. On a side-note, I hate how BTD clones/western yandereslop never gets finished and are always stuck as demos.

I see so many devs give up on their games because they don't get much success, or they struggle to learn programming and get stuck forever on a technical issue, whereas troons get free help all the time. It's also in part because making connections in the niche requires being pro-active and sucking the dick of the big devs to get them to shout you out, and TiMs are more likely to have no self-awareness and feel comfortable doing this. The admin of the biggest western VN dev server is also a TiM, and he goes out of his way to promote other TiMs and games about troons.
As a female dev you're also more likely to get entitled comments asking you to switch your protagonist to male, calling you homophobic for having a female protagonist or whatever other shit men never have to deal with, and I've seen devs quit over that kind of harassment. And finally, otomes with any kind of NSFW content regularly get review bombed by scrotes (because they search for "adult visual novels" and are angry to find anything that isn't some ugly ass 3D rape simulator) so they'll be harder to find if the itch.io rating gets too low.
There's plenty of female devs that push through anyway, learn to code all alone and gain an ok following with no or minimal connections, but I'd say they're split between the handful of super big devs who now dev full-time and make enough money to have a team and the many devs with full-time jobs who chip away at their projects slowly and go on hiatus when life gets in the way. The latter are hard to find if you don't dig through itch.io tags really deeply, but they are there.

Please tell me I’m not the only one who remembers the posts on the Lemmasoft forums about Mage Wars. I think this all happened in like 2017. I used to love reading the developer’s posts because there was so much drama kek. The backstory for those unfamiliar is there was this very obvious Fate/Stay Night rip-off that the author would insist was NOT copying at all. Tell me if this sounds familiar: a 16-year old mage with daddy issues who is really bad at being a mage (his main ability is creating pale imitations of real things), but is really good at cooking gets conscripted into a battle royale against his will. Other major characters include a silver-haired and mysterious loli with a grudge against the protagonist despite him not recognizing her and turns out to be much older than she looks, a tsundere gifted mage with family issues who initially attacks the protagonist before becoming his ally, an older man who initially seems like a semi-decent guy but it turns out he’s the biggest menace in the story and a sociopath who enjoys watching people’s suffering, and a blonde girl who’s been living in Europe and possesses a massive personal investment in the battle royale. See? Totally different. The author also wrote a bunch of negative comments for voice actors, singers, etc. who were working for free, and there are several posts on the forums with these people just arguing about who didn't communicate effectively. It was so entertaining, and I know I’m not properly recapturing the magic. I decided to reread it because I wanted to share with the thread.
Notable features include reused Touhou sprites, voice acting that will repeat again and again until you hit the next line (Yuuji, is it really you? Yuuji, is it really you? Yuuji, is it really you?), an underestimation of the world's population by about 4.2 billion, an Italian catgirl, cooking scenes (everyone’s favorite part of FSN), a character taking ‘liar liar, pants on fire’ in the most literal way someone possibly could, and certain images not having been implemented so instead of having a background, it’s just a black screen with “image ‘kitchen’ not found” written in the corner. One plot element I found really funny was that the story promises 16 mages, but I guess that was too many to handle, so Not-Illya just fucking murders 6 of them off-screen. They die off-screen in every route. The maximum we ever see is 7 mages plus the overseer. There’s another part where you encounter a button on a random street while walking home from school. It has a sign that says “do not press,” and if you choose to press it, the game will prompt you twice more. Answer ‘yes’ three times, and the street explodes. The antagonist of the second route jumps out of nowhere and calls you stupid. To be fair, I did deserve to be called stupid there. If you don’t press it, the antagonist jumps out of the shadows to inform you that you ‘passed the test.’ I don’t know what I expected to happen when I pressed it, but what was his end goal here? He states it’s to make sure the protagonist isn’t susceptible to reverse psychology and then starts ranting about how he hates people who are susceptible to that kind of thing, which, I guess that makes sense?? But then, later in the story, the reverse psychology option, when presented by that same man, IS the right one. Imagine if Kirei Kotomine had put a massive “DO NOT PRESS” button in the middle of Fuyuki City, and then when Shirou pressed it, Kirei started ranting about how it represented his own capacity for evil and his struggle with his own morality. That’s how random this all felt. At one point, there’s a character who I thought was being built up as some kind of edgy rival, and then he becomes a victim of the magical equivalent to a drone strike and fucking dies in like his second appearance. Then, the guy who killed him, the protagonist’s best friend (surprise villain), also fucking dies in this exact same scene for a different reason. This is immediately after the betrayal reveal. The edgy rival character shows up in multiple routes and usually dies without contributing, so I don’t think he really had any purpose. In the first route, the main villain’s motivation is to protect his grandson (the protagonist) from dying in the Mage Wars by murdering all of the mages, but then there’s a bad ending where he just poisons the protagonist?? That does NOT seem like the best way to keep your grandson alive. The way the third route starts is by the catgirl breaking into the protagonist’s bedroom and forcing him to sign up for the Mage Wars. There is another character cursed to have cat ears who kills himself by drinking poison nine times (because as a catboy, he has 9 lives) in front of his two children. There are also a lot of typos that are really funny, with my favorite being when you “call an ambivalence” for an injured girl. If this post seems disjointed, it’s because Mage Wars has no pacing. Shit just happens. This VN is so schizo. Please give it a try because I didn’t include everything and there’s much more wild shit that happens. You know in the bad art thread, how some anons will write “sovl” in response to specific drawings? This is the VN equivalent.
