It's better to hold your kids back a year at school if you can. I've noticed, looking back, it was the youngest kids that typically got in trouble, typically got bullied, and typically had ADHD diagnoses. A difference of 11 months is pretty stark at the age of 5-11, and the older kids have a noticeable advantage in everything from sports, to education to socializing. They're the ones that are considered more mature, considered better students and will simply be more likely to have a better childhood. If they're good at sports, having that discrete age advantage means they'll be picked up by talent seekers for sports clubs. If you have a daughter, there's less of a chance she'll be sexually abused by the boys around her.
12 months won't really make a difference for their career, and you can jump them a year forward again pretty easily in many countries that start exams around the age of 15-18, not that I think you need to.
But certainly, if your kid is close to the sorting age cut-off in the school system, do what you can to lean your kid into the class where he or she is the older kid.
