So, when it comes to treating psychiatric phenomena, we have to use external cues to evaluate patient. In a normal outpatient setting, you can really only rely on self-reporting and behavioral cues. Of course, these are things that are very prone to error, intentional or not. I think a huge issue with psychology + psychiatry today lies in not realizing the extent to which patient awareness of DSM symptoms can subconsciously alter their behavior and reporting to more closely match with the condition they have already decided they have. For better or for worse, the MASSIVE tics / female autism / DID trends on TikTok have made providers acutely aware of this, even though similar (but smaller) trends have happened before.
