Are cheap iPads worth it if I just want to use Procreate with the apple pen?
Also which are the cheapest options?
No. 1832039
>>1832001I recently got myself an iPad 9th gen 2021, the cheapest I could get, with an Apple Pencil 1st gen (around 460 euros for everything). Personally, I'm enjoying it. I use it only for Procreate and at first I felt put off by procreate's simplicity, I do now feel quite comfortable. It's perfect for drawing in a comfy bed or while traveling! It got me to draw more, because it's way faster to pull it out and start drawing whenever I have time, than it was with a PC and a screen tablet.
I wish I got more space though, since mine is 64gb, but I just store most of finished stuff on PC and it's alright. Sometimes it limits the amount of available layers on a large canvas, but I treat it like a challenge, kek. I'm not a fan of apple at all, most apple version of my fav apps are shit, but it all worth it to me in the end. And it was way cheaper for me to buy this tablet, than any other non-Apple ones.
Before I used XP Pen screen tablet and, still, occasionally return to it for sculpting and more detailed drawing stuff.

nonny that said you need to rest your hand, but let me reassure you with one thing: i had the same problem, possibly even worse since i work in industrial screenprinting which puts a ton of strain on the wrists and involves lots of repetitive actions at every step of the process. if i can beat it so can you.
so, rest. also, get a wrist brace and tighten it to juuuuuust this side of too tight, not enough to cut off circulation but you definitely dont forget its there. you can wear it to support your wrists during daily activities for a week or so, but give your writs breaks from the compression. work towards just wearing it while you sleep.
ibuprofen.
once you feel an easing of symptoms, look for stretching exercises like vid rel. if you do them right your wrist is going to hurt worse before it gets better.
rest and compression are the most important parts of your initial healing. stretching is for building strength and lengthening/loosening your wrist tendons, which are too tight right now. once you feel better, you should get in the habit of stretching your wrists, arms and shoulders everyday (ish). i didnt for a while and my symptoms came back.
unfortunately, this is something you will have to beat back on the long term, but its not only doable it will become second nature after a while. do not give in to despair

If you mean color pick the reference, the only thing I'll say against it, is that it can pick up weird ass colors, because the compression of the image creates some varying weird pixels. I usually blur the image to reduce this. If you mean color picking your own drawing, that's a silly thing to feel bothered by, it's a tool like many others. Just use it wisely, as I said it can pick up weird colors, but usually it's fine value wise.

>>1833370it can be! the following applies to burgers like me.
most jobs in the industry are unskilled, and most of them are related to printing on shirts and other garments. so you can get an entry position as a "press operator" at all kinds of places. i personally find working with the automatic presses boring, so ive carved our a position where i work with clients fixing their art, prepping screens for the print job, mixed inks, doing manual printing jobs for specialty jobs, etc.
i like it because a lot of shops are moving to the ten hour shift, four day week model. so even if im exhausted at the end of a working day i have a three day weekend to work on my own stuff. its also very self directed once you're trained, i basically spend all ten hours a day listening to books and podcasts about gardening with barely an interruption, heaven for me personally.
i will say since t shirt places are full of those unskilled kind of positions i mentioned, your coworkers will be a real mixed bag, like a lot of service industries. winter is a slow season, so your shop may give you less hours at that time (though many are moving away from this practice as well to stay competitive with workplaces like Amazon and UPS). the vast majority of art you work with is pretty ugly! you learn to love the process and doing things right, not the results themselves.
getting in with a place that does letterpress work, band shirts or paper posters is much harder, as there are less of them and these jobs are prized by assholes like you and me who actually want to do fine art at least some of the time. im interning at one while i juggle a garment printing job to see what happens. i have an edge over my coworkers in both places since i just like doing my job and being left alone, whereas a lot of these guys kind of just want to get paid to doodle all day or something, and aren't suited to the actual repetitive tasks involved in any kind of printing.
honestly if any nonnas in this thread are dying trying to juggle a wagie job with your art goals, id look into screenprinting jobs in your area. lots of shops will let you use their equipment for personal projects, and its good work where you dont get yelled at by customers all day. a good operator makes like 20-22 an hour, graphic artists slightly more, screen cleaners and shirt catchers slightly less. beats starbucks, at least.

>>1834200>>1834301the thing with shitpost sketches and such is that they're usually much easier for random people to interact with in a because they're piggybacking off of a meme/fandom, contain dialogue/quotes, character interactions, and tend to have more exaggerated expressions so they can work as reaction images or memes on their own. They're like those shitty relatable comics a lot of people eat up, they're accessible and easy to share around.
With your own art, try including more reasons for your audience to engage, such as by telling a story, having multiple characters interacting in an interesting way, maybe even try asking questions to try and encourage comments. Sorry these suggestions are vague, its hard without knowing what kind of art you do. What makes you want to engage with someone else's work? Maybe try incorporating that more into your own. another thing that helped was i cut out a lot of extraneous activity, some of which you might not realize affects your wrist. i gave up video games for a couple months, because im a pc gamer and clicking a million times a minute isnt a good time for your wrist. i bought one of those carpal tunnel mice for the things that i had to do on the computer. i used my non dominant hand for more things.

Nonnies, I don't know if I can draw or write at all anymore. I just want to quit.
I've had one of the most difficult years of my life, am in a rigorous grad program, and have genetic depression that hasn't responded to therapy–and this would all be fine, except my partner is a real artist, went to art school and everything, and now as I start to utterly hate my work and even my vision for my work I can't help but compare to her.
She loves my stuff! But it's very different from hers, and I think this latest spiral started when I wrote a story inspired by one of hers and it was significantly darker and edgier, and she said so saying she'd never do that. And she doesn't. But now I just hate everything I do because it is stupid and edgy. And I hate the ideas that come up in my brain before they even land on paper because they're so generic and edgy and needlessly unmarketable.
I'm a hobbyist and I'll never be anything but one, but I don't even feel good, and I don't think I can be good because the only subject matter I want to draw is… stupid and a waste of time. I just don't ever want to do art again. It's been months since I drew anything decent.

its possible that like lots of other dedicated hobbyists in this thread, you're struggling to see yourself in your art without external validation. understandable, since its hard to do anything "just for yourself" in a world with some highly engaging media to tug at our attention.
what's helped me the most is realizing that most people's favorite art isn't necessarily the masterpieces of the world. most people are really moved by middlebrow fiction, art fair paintings, etsy jewelry, etc. its made it a lot easier for me to put out self indulgent shit once i realized theres literally always a community of people out there who respond similarly.
including people who like venting their spleen via edgy ass stories kek. dont be so hard on yourself.

>>1834565Yeah, I guess my problem is just feeling inferior as a hobbyist–my current social circle are professional artists or at least aspiring to be (mostly my partner's friends) and I just feel really humiliated knowing that I try to do the same thing these people do but I never did or will go to school for it or sell it… I've had recurring nightmares of them reading my comics and laughing at me because they're so juvenile.
My partner just doesn't LIKE dark stories, we played a TTRPG campaign I ran for her and her friends and whenever I had a storyline for an NPC that was obviously heading in a bad direction she'd get really upset if I didn't change it. In the end my story felt really defanged and I hated the way it turned out AND the way I wanted it to turn out since clearly what I wanted was too needlessly edgy–but I digress from my point about my visual art.
>>1834568>is it a lack of response from people other than your partner to your work that bothers you? Not necessarily, I get some positive responses to my art elsewhere, I don't really get attention if I post in general, but no negative responses either.
>maybe you see people online making fun of the kinds of subjects you like to explore? Well, yeah, just because… it's edgy… I see a lot of desire for nice found family soft healing content and I just can't stand any of it. But at the same time I feel incapable of making art (comics, specifically) that doesn't portray addiction or suicidality or
abusive relationships or bad endings etc. Etc. It makes me feel like a braindead child.
>by what metric do you evaluate whether or not a work is a "waste of time"?Does it make anyone other than me happy? Does it demonstrate expertise? Is it something that needs to exist?

>>1834710i see! i relate to that quite a bit. especially in ttrpg communities, i feel like everyone wants that cute, ragtag-bunch to loving queer family story that they see in podcast performances and communities. that's fine, but it stifling to people like you. and its hard to push back, because it seems like something everyone "should" want, or at least be fine with. this is true in a lot of creative hobbies.
your partner has different tastes from you, and i dont think youll be able to bridge that gap, but you dont actually have to.
i couldnt find the comic itself, google sucks ass now, but i remember once reading a short comic about telling "dark" stories. it depicted a fantastical floating civilization of goblin like creatures, all creating whimsical air ships called "stories" that other goblins can hop onto to enjoy. but one of them, a grumpy dude off from the rest, is making a mean looking airship, something punky and spikey instead of sweet and charming. one of his comrades says something like, dude, you're crazy, you put so much effort into your stories, but everytime you finish you push it off the edge of our city instead of letting it fly. dont you know stories are supposed to be uplifing (you see where the metaphor came from here, kek).
and this different goblin ignores this, doesnt care. his story ship goes over the edge. but in the last panels, you see far below this awesome magical city, a bunch of people suffering in some ooze, unable to get out. until the nasty looking story gets to their level, and just one of them is able to use it to pull himself out.
sounds cheesy, but i still think of that comic every now that then. now, is every "edgy" story in the world secretly motivated by noble aims? no. but i think some people are just drawn to that kind of stuff, and fluffy stuff just makes them feel more different and fucked up. some of my favorite books are actually massive bummers, but theyre so important to me because i really felt seen. i feel like even 3 edgy 5 me deviant art ocs and splatterpunk shit has a place in the ecosystem.
i think your partner recognizes that while your stuff isnt her cup of tea, its coming from an honest place. if the freaks in this thread can instantly find a community comparing husbando feet i dont see why you should change your style.
remember this: the most fucked up thing you could possibly dream up has probably been done worse by a moid. and he probably got an award for it. go out and even the fucking playing field.

>>1834710>Does it make anyone other than me happy? Does it demonstrate expertise? Is it something that needs to exist?nta but in my opinion, those questions are meaningless. Well okay the 2nd question I understand, because you can't help but worry your stuff will look cringe to others and that's just something most people fear. But you only have one life, and if you're not doing things (not just creating art, just doing stuff in general) first and foremost for you, for whom? Even if you're dedicating those hours of your free time for a cause or another person, that's still a cause/person important to YOU. And that's reason enough for it to exist.
I also write dark stuff that almost never ends happily, and the reason I do it is because I like it. This year I even decided to revisit a story idea I wrote up when I was like 14. It is quite literally edgy stuff a 14 year old liked, but I still like it, so I guess I'm still kinda cringe in that regard. But thats reason enough for me to want to bring it to life.
I don't know what your comics are like, maybe they really are Shadow the hedgehog holding a gun ow the edge stuff. But if you like it, is edgy that bad? Lots of people have shit taste in lots of things, but engaging with those things still makes them happy. And you can make yourself happy because you can make the stuff you like, so you should let yourself be happy too.

problematic. If there's political themes in it then it has to be watered down and forced into the American right/left dichotomy, even it wouldn't make sense. Edginess for coom sake is protected because its men doing the cooming, and we all know cooming is sacred. Edgy art, like most art/writing nowadays, isn't genuine anymore. Even the supposed feel-good saccharine queer stories that are plaguing comics and TTRPG aren't genuine; they're made to virtue signal and show how morally righteous the author is. I don't want to derail too much with my sperg but Nonna I think you should keep writing/drawing your edgy shit, even if its cringe. >>1835125A better idea would be to look at inspiring real life photos or backgrounds drawn by people rather than to ask AI, because AI's work will always look weird, stale or overdesigned.
Look at this: I asked Bing to generate fake bootleg game art where the setting is a gnome forest. At first glance it looks fine but upon inspection not only it's weird but also the composition adds a lot of crap just to make it look cool.
It doesn't really have reason or taste, it just apes the work of humans.
You can use AI only when you have developed your skill enough to fix its mistakes and weird, unpleasant decisions. I don't even mean bad anatomy it's just that so far it has no real idea how to create a pleasant image. This is why its works that imitate art that's weird and overdecorated like bootleg game covers are interesting: because bootleg game art also lacks rhyme or reason most of the time, it was just underpaid chinese interns with no taste or sense of aesthetic making collages with other people's work.

ive lost friends for being honest in my critiques (when asked for an honest critique, obviously). but the trendy art school i went to absolutely took advantage of hopeful cake makers by not having portfolio reviews, not allowing work to be graded on quality, and in the end spitting out kids in debt with no skills up to par with the competitive industries they want to enter.
that being said, in defense of my meme… the older i get and the more art i sell, the more ive learned to appreciate that "objective" artistic brilliance doesn't always mean people will connect with your work. one of my best friends makes the tackiest (her words) little dragon themed jewelry and her clients loooove her pieces. and she adores making them. sometimes the goofy looking cake is what people want to eat.

I'm sick to my stomach, I'm so tired of seeing AI images on every site that sells prints/art/etc. The marketplace is also filled with people selling coyprighted material, like Sanrio patterns or whatever. What's the difference between, say, Society6 or Etsy, and Aliexpress? It's the fucking same shit, with scammers posting products to earn a quick buck.

>Ok
>I tell her to wait for me to send another update so she doesn't feel like I'm gonna run away with the game (kek)

>She approves it but tells me that she had to spend the money on Christmas gifts for her family and on a few days she'll give me the game

i think the main issue isn't the whole 20 rts and 100 likes thing but the verification process that comes after that because once your post succeeds in getting the metrics you need to dm it to vgen and someone will basically analyze you to check if you're a good pick (or lbr, to see if you deserve to be in the platform) and then if you get approved you're cleared to go. to me that's the tricky part because they check things such as your online engagement, how often you post, how much art you pump out, your art history, how many commissions you've gotten/how many clients you had and if you posted said commissions and so on. they even check how many fucking tags you add to the posts (i saw a mod say that they consider 3 hashtags or more a "red flag" even though twitter's limit for shadowbanning is around 5 or 6).

>Or do artists just hope they are going to get found by more customers on there?I have some friends on VGen and they told me some stuff about that. Many of the artists that go to VGen do so in hopes of landing a Vtuber costumer that pays big, because many Vtubers use VGen to get commissions for graphics and emote packs and such. There's also the whole FOMO factor and the "I'm part of a fancy closed group" mentality since VGen basically acts as a badge that tells the world you're "good enough" to have been accepted by the platform. Kinda bs in my view, but that's how it is. Like you said I do get why they'd do that since their whole marketing depends on their artist base so it's kind of obvious that they'd want only successful, established and good artists on their wing.

Hahnemuhle D&S Sketchbooks come in big square formats and the paper is ivory yellow and has a bit of a tooth to it.

IMO it's incredibly frustrating since there are artists a million times better that don't have a fraction of the following.
Copying doesn't take nearly as much effort as creating something original does, and with copying you already know the color and shadow placement and it's easy to change,as opposed to when you create a new piece, have to come up with a color palette etc.

Lost my jobs due to layoffs, so I ended up opening my commissions again for the first time in ages to survive. My main motivation for getting a job again is so I won't have to do this, because I fucking hate it, kek.
Only once did I have a client who was pleasant and eager to see her vision drawn in my style. Everyone else assumes they can just link me a couple of pieces from artists that either don't do commissions or are way too expensive for them and push me to draw it that way. They approve the refined sketch and the linework, and then decide to start doing the whole "hmm, there's something off, uwu I dunno, maybe the eyes can be bigger?" dance and then link me to the artwork whose eyes they clearly want instead. Never are they straight up asking from the very start, since I clearly state in my rules that I won't change my style and for them to make sure to look through my portfolio before making the request. They are compliant once I point this out, but it always leads to people being disappointed in the final results and leave me feeling awkward once the work is done. I just want to do art as a hobby and earn money from a completely mundane job instead, because this always makes me miserable.

It fails to be erotic in ways i thought couldnt be possible. It makes so much sense the only fans are mentally ill women with pronouns. I will enver understand how some women meme themselves into finding this shit attractive, and i say this as someone who finds ''ugly'' features cute, but in a 'moeblob with messy hair and dark circles', not whatever this disgusting shit is.

>>1843283>>1843272I agree with you.
I'd also add that so many women meme themselves into liking ugly men not only because they bombarded with pro ugly incel rhetoric , but bc they're also constantly demeaned in media and made to feel incredibly ugly. So many womens' self esteem is nonexistent, and they're made to feel that it isn't right to like a man who is "more attractive than them" bc hes out of their league. Men find every chance they can to erode women's self esteem, and convince them that ugly men are the only men they have a chance with.
People seem to forget that fantasy is just that, and that it doesn't matter how you look in a fantasy, it's about your desires.
But that's the whole point, fantasy is so male centered that even heterosexual women have to bend their fantasies to men's desires, and not their own. As you said men want women attracted to uggos and not bishounens bc those ogreish men are just an extension of male desires. To be the ugly or below average nobody who somehow gets all the hot women. Like in harem mangas. Because women's media has to be an extension of men's media.
It's pretty telling when there are so many stories of men feeling offended by lesbianism or fetishizing lesbians despite lesbians never wanting men. It's because everything has to cater to men and males, and anything that doesn't will get forced to be.

This happened with skull girls, everytime you criticize it for being an obvious coomery moid game the rabid coomers will try to convince you this receeding hairline faggot is somehow the equivalent of eyecandy for women. >>1843556I think you’re right but there’s more to it than that. I think the other half is that women who love men (fictional or otherwise) genuinely do actually love them, and want to give them the best, including the best version of themselves. Men do not seem to give a fuck because I do not think men actually love women, they just want to have sex with women. Having sex with the most attractive woman is the biggest win for them. The disparity between their ugliness and a woman’s worth may actually be part of the appeal to them.
It’s a whole system that plays into the favor of mediocre men who don’t try.
I’d like for women to love strongly and generously, but they must have higher standards and expectations. There’s nothing wrong with wanting to be your best for your partner so long as your partner is equally trying to be his best for you.

>>1843272>>1843556nta but my issue isn't the discussion of women not being allowed to like pretty men and how low the standards for male are, I just wished this discussion could be less aggressive towards other women. Not every woman who is into a guy that isn't a perfect model is a dumb brainwashed woman or a pickme, there is more to it and not every fantasy is about perfection. People can be into different things at the same time, one doesn't exclude the other. We shouldn't shame women for being into bishies or postwall moids, it doesn't really matter. We don't get as many pretty female oriented males in media because moids feel personally threatened by pretty men. They can't relate to a male character if he isn't acting like a badass, a misogynist or ugly. It's about their insecurities, it isn't about what we like.
Things like
>>1843340 are a issue when people distort the source material. If the character is an anime bishie, maybe we should keep it close to that, instead of forcing a whole oc into the character. two notes: the working artist mothers i know already established their career before having children, and, very importantly, they have very supportive partner. someone who proactively supports their career. their spouses take a primary or equal role in childcare, they help run market stalls, help with admin etc etc etc… that makes the difference, i think.

I agree that the old man psyop needs to stop, but arguing with anons won't help kek all you can do is block everyone you see approving of and drawing those kinds of men and support people who make what you enjoy instead. trigger warning tags just because you don’t like “ugly” things is just deranged. Does that also mean people who aren’t that good at drawing aren’t allowed to post because their drawings turn out “ugly”? And if someone has different tastes and thinks certain styles of drawings aren’t ugly, how are they supposed to know that other people will find it ugly? Or should everyone just start tagging all their art with “ugly” just in case? Even if you got what you wanted it would never work in a community of millions of people like twitter. Social media already has a block function for you to use on artists you don’t like, and you can also just ignore the drawings you don’t like. No one is forcing you to like them. And if you still can’t handle being in online spaces despite these measures, then maybe you shouldn’t be online.

Moids do a decent job at maintaining a general standard of sexiness and limitations over the amount of ugliness they’d tolerate from a woman, and they’re stupid as fuck. And yes, before you say anything, there are exceptions and aberrations in specific fetish communities, but generally speaking, men mostly agree on what is and is not acceptable.

Moids don't seem to care about other moids' tastes and standards, at most they laugh at them. It's women's tasted that make them seethe… and usually I find that if an ugly fictional moid becomes popular among women, moids start seething and crying "why him and not me?".
And let's not even talk about deranged cute husbandos like Nagito Komaeda… moids either hate them or think they're just like them fr.

But they all have strong opinions on what does and doesn’t give them a boner, and are usually offended when they see pandering happening that doesn’t suit their standards.
The majority of men have generic taste and that’s why you end up seeing a lot of the same. But you shouldn’t conflate the general consensus on what gives them boners to the philosophy of their boners. Every man thinks his dick is god and a lot of their dicks agree. The issue is their god complex, not necessarily their specific sexual interests.
It’s very easy to understand.

Maybe it’s partly psyop, maybe it’s partly women thinking more about what kind of “experience” they could have with a guy rather than pure looks. They look funky and weird, have strong, easy to predict personality quirks (even if the quirk is being cartoonishly 'unpredictable') that would liven up your day and are usually powerful/dangerous in a safe way. Not my cup of tea, but I do understand the appeal (especially for younger women/girls). Plus if someone finds the character design too uggo in canon they can just walk it back into looking more bishie or whatever if they want.

You should just do a daily routine of live drawing, figure drawing and master studies, just with digital. Its really not much more complicated.
I feel you may be overrating your trad art skill too. I mean if you know anatomy why would a digital drawing have bad anatomy? if you know it you know it.

When I am creating realistic portrait-type paintings I generally use just a single brush, only adjusting the size if needed; I will emphasize for those types of paintings that the airbrush effect generally cheapens the overall visual quality and can act as a shortcut for novice digital artists who don't understand how color and tone interact in creating shadows or other variations in shade. It's better to get a feel for the different brushes, what kinds of effects you can achieve with them, and be able to pick which one(s) you prefer—then your choices can become more liberal as you add intention to your design. You will just need to keep practicing. Good luck!

Manhood is supposed to be the magical land of never being judged ever again by meanie women. A woman that openly talks about preferring fit men
triggers the same neurons as being picked on for being the only girl wearing a t-shirt at the pool does.

I hate draw your ship memes and those fugly blobby ship dynamic trends, but this is a result of Western artists being the overwhelming majority on sites like Twitter and thus having a greater amount of insufferable clout chasing autists. It's not a uniquely Western problem and I'm quite frankly tired of people discussing Western vs every other type of artist as if they're from different planets. We're in an age where the internet makes it so we're all connected, all taking inspiration from each other, yet people are convinced that any set of artists from one country are especially unique or better? Yes, there is a culture difference, but more often than not when people praise the technical skill of say, Japanese or Russian artists, that's because what they see on their majority USAmerican Twitter feed is the best of the best. They don't see the depths of Pixiv tags or those who can barely hold a pencil. In the same way there's a lot of actually good Western artists, but when your feed is plagued by nonstop tranny pandering with titchop scars and borderline caricature art styles it's easy to delude yourself into thinking all Western art is shit.

It is very cliquey, yes. Sure, there are all sorts of people and some are fine, but cliques are a thing and they are everywhere even more if your class is a big one or/and it's a prestigious, big name school. Lots of bootlickers, lots of people trying so hard to be the best of the class that they make themselves look like an insane clown, lots of people who think that they're secretly a super amazing artist but in reality they're just extremely delusional and stubborn. And, of course, many jealous people. Many.
In my experience I actually didn't come across that many gendies. I saw some here and there but I definitely saw more of them online than IRL.

>>1848457Being able to draw is a desirable skill for a 3D animator, not a required one. I'm a 3D artist (can do the full pipeline but prefer sculpting, texturing, and vfx) and while I was studying I was the only person in my class who actually did any form of 2D art and animation before enrolling (similar to how 2D animation attracts calarts stereotypes that want to make their ocs into the next SU, 3D animation attracts people who want to be involved in their favourite or make videogames, with a smaller fraction that want to ape disney-pixar). It gives me an edge to have strong 2D roots, but considering a lot of 3D animators only animate and don't touch the other parts of the pipeline, it shouldn't be surprising that many don't bother to grind a skill they don't need to make their artistic contribution to a film etc.
Rigging is an arcane art (in 3D anyway, not sure about the process for 2D puppet animation), and a good rig with artistic needs in mind is integral to a 3D animator's ability to bring a model to life (even if it's simple).

Gesture anon, dont stagnate. Dont let fake praise that makes no sense ''50s archie style!!1!'' stop you from getting better. You are actually doing monumental effort by studying instead of drawing the same generic 3/4 animu girl like a scrote, try to improve, get better, and apply what you learn to your drawings. Also check manga material's twitter, it's very good. Dont let those shitty tiktok ''how to draw animu'' give you baf habits, learn from good sources and do a lot of mastercopies of artists you like.

i'm the nona who posted the gestures to start with and i wasn't trying to draw anime, outside of the black figures which were yoh yohshinari copies. anyway i really do appreciate the crit, as it was helpful and not just "this sucks (and schizo babble that assumes way too much about my intent)" which is roughly what i got on /ic/. i didn't find it rude at all.
speaking of /ic/: the guy said it's bad to only practice gesture when you're starting out, is that true? a few books i read said nailing gesture before you try to master structure is important, lest you want stiff figures.

What you shouldn't do is let your art stagnate. And working solely on style is going to do that. And not just when drawing. Go out and observe people animals and objects.

For the best success, I would suggest finding a master's work that you truly enjoy, find and describe the aspects you love and want add to your work, then work on that very consciously while you study. At least, this is how I'd do it if I were to go back and start again. People would tell me to copy Rembrandt and Anders Zorn and they just weren't my thing and I found Rembrandt's works really ugly. Sure, you learn regardless if you copy something at all without thought, but make the most of it. I'm glad you're finding happiness in art. Illustrated covers are a good show of technical skill. You'd have to have good composition and story telling to make an eye catching one and for a book it would truly make a difference. Plus many book lovers appreciate such covers and not the graphic shit they do with books commonly so your work would be appreciated.

>>1859814You don't need to hyperfocus on anatomy, but pulling up a reference and give it a few glances as you sketch out your idea is going to help you out a lot. Learning decent anatomy is the very bedrock of being able to express yourself freely as an artist if your main focus is human or humanoid characters. All the best art out there is made by people who learned anatomy and developed a style with this knowledge in mind. It's artists with no or little knowledge of anatomy that make stiff and limited art because they have no base knowledge to play around with.
You can clearly tell zoomers have taken over most of the online art spaces. Not long ago you'd be made fun of if you tried to argue that learning the basics limited your creative freedom. Of course, art doesn't suck just because the artist didn't get the anatomy quite right, but you can clearly tell the difference in quality between an artist who tried and an artist who's convinced they don't need to learn anything.

>>1859823Don't be obtuse. There's a time and place for the "you need to know the rules to break the rules" mantra but in a picture like
>>1858874 you need to have an underdeveloped sense of comprehension if you look at it and the first thought you have is "OH MY GOD THE ANATOMY IS SO FUCKED LMAO". It's what I would expect someone completely outside the art scene to say because they can't pay attention to the composition, usage of art techniques and symbolism and the linework since they're unable to deconstruct pieces like this. It's like normies looking at abstract art and smugly exclaiming how "even they can do better" because they have no idea what it's about.
Honestly Da Vinci and other old master scrotes autistically obsessed with clinically correct anatomy and bible fanart being the endgame of all art completely fucked over the western art for centuries to come, we could still have the creative medieval paintings inspiring us today.

>>1859831>Honestly Da Vinci and other old master scrotes autistically obsessed with clinically correct anatomy and bible fanart being the endgame of all art completely fucked over the western art for centuries to come, we could still have the creative medieval paintings inspiring us today. You can make your argument without spewing this nonsense. Da Vinci and other Renaissance artists still had rules to follow other than correct anatomy. They were super autistic about composition and still had to adhere to the symbolism of their times, so no they didn't make impressive but meaningless art. Some of them even ditched "clinically correct anatomy", like Michelangelo, whose muscular characters go way beyond real life.
The artists that were the most obsessed with the old masters of Renaissance were actually the Mannerists, who copied only from the work of Renaissance masters to make paintings that couldn't care less about anatomy and were full of symbols to the point of obsession. Going by your logic they couldn't have been able to paint things like picrel.
Also, I got the impression that the old masters people talk about on /ic/ and this thread were actually old illustrators like Leyendecker.

>>1859814holy shit the fucking cope just to defend ugly ass yaoi anatomy. like i said, you can both be good at anatomy and have a dystinctive stylized style, anatomy isnt restrictive in the slightlest and that piece would actually be good if the artist bothered to give a shit about anatomy. like seriously how can you say good anatomy is stiff and restrictive while defending an ugly stiff drawing of a femboy with anachan legs surrounded by vomit flowers kek. some of you have never looked for art made before the 2010s and it shows. i seriously dont understand how everyone is defending that piece of shit drawing, do you guys even bother to look at art outside of twitter? art that isnt made by japanese artists? its not an unique style either, there are a bazillion of kojima clones out there. pic rel a better drawing with the exact same style i found in my inspor folder and, gasp, it has anatomy???

The image almost doesn't matter but the way "gay" tifs talk about moids is genuinely disgusting. Please don't ever admit this kind of thing again.
Maybe this artist is a gay moid but I somehow doubt it.

>>1859292I have a personal artcow but she's less of an artcow and more of a "BPDchan themlet that posts her entire life on the instagram stories of her art account and can't go more than a couple days without posting a detailed rant about what she is currently mad at in her current life circumstances"cow. I just watch her stories like a telenovela. She doesn't post a lot of art nowadays because she's too busy trying to not go back to homelessness.

I have a retarded problem, I'm a casual weeb and I think a lot of "problematic" drawings are cute. Nothing extreme but I think a lot of shotas and loli characters are often cute, and there are also a lot of cute female "skimpy clothes" designs that I like a lot because I just find them cute. The problem is that I kinda know that they're supposed to pander to men in gross ways but I guess since I don't find them sexually attractive myself I just think they look cute and cool and can't see what's bad about them. It makes me feel so conflicted because I'd love to draw cute lolis but truly in a 100% innocent way but I know I'd get called a pedo panderer and such.
Somehow I can relate to Dolly Parton saying she thought the local prostitute was the prettiest woman in town. My taste is just trash but in an innocent non-sexual way.
