The print will be shiny and will look like polyester, there may be too many details like ruffles and lace (poorly made too). Another obvious one is blouseless coords, accessories like leg warmers, fishnets or other pantyhose, demonia shoes that do not match, etc. This one can be easy to overlook if you are new but a lot of itas have no understanding of motifs and will mix and match items that clash. Picture a black skirt with a cathedral print paired with some black pumps adorned with bows. It sounds fine but the cathedral motif is obviously considered gothic and the shoes would be sweet, picrel would have been a better match. You mentioned them being ugly, I do think there's some bias in those threads but that does bring up another point. Lolita is all about presentation and that will have to include things like hygeine, skincare, makeup and haircare. Having greasy, dyed hair that's been growing out will immediately make your coord look less put together, it makes you look like you haven't given the outfit much thought. Same goes for clown makeup. Some women, at least in my opinion, have faces that don't suit their chosen style. I don't think they should be posted for having an unfitting face, though.

The EGL livejournal used to be full of extreme nitpicking over one brand's shade of sax vs another brand's shade of sax and why it was impossible to wear them together because they were totally different colors and didn't fucking match reeeee. It was hilarious and everyone took it way too seriously but I kinda miss those days, now everyone's a lolita if the frills are in your heart and there are no rules uguuu. It was common to put together collages of coord ideas to justify a major purchase, because lolita is an expensive fashion and you'd have to squeeze as many outfits as possible out of every item. That meant that wardrobes were built slowly and with a lot of intent. If you didn't understand the rules, you'd end up with blouses that didn't match your skirts and JSKs, accessories that matched nothing, and wigs meant for a totally different style.
