Frequently Asked Questions
>Where can I download brushes and CSP assets?
Resources such as /dbag/ are easy to find online.
>How do I schedule my art?
Professional artist's schedules are easy to find online, however these may be unsustainable long term and it might be better to use them for references for you to build your own rather than attempting to follow them to a T.
>Is drawing furry or porn profitable? Will it give me clout?
It can be, but the market is incredibly saturated and coomers and furries already have artists they want to commission. You will be competing against thousands of people, consider what makes you stand out and if you really want to sink time and effort into something you may not enjoy even a little.

>her art is amazing, yet Devil's candy is barely popular and is hanging on a thread, probably hasnt been finished/cancelled yet because its the passion project of the author
Damn kek, I don’t think Devil’s Candy is that unpopular. The first book’s kickstarter got 2072 backers at least and iirc it got a deal with Viz and was being sold in bookstores in other countries too. The fans are just more lowkey and it doesn’t seem to inspire as much memes and autism as stuff like homestuck or ava’s demon(too bad it took a huge hit in popularity with all the drama and hiatuses).

I agree with your point though. As someone who used to read Devil’s Candy, I would say it’s decent, but not particularly novel or interesting to me. It’s what I’d expect from a story about monsters made by anime fans.
I disliked how it fell into some shonen tropes for the female characters, like big titty waifu heroine, a few unnecessary fanservice moments, etc.
There’s also the shy girl who has an unrequited crush on her friend, the male lead. She’s thin and dainty uwu but is super strong while the males of her same species get to look big and buff, which made her focus chapter kind of eye-rolly because she gets “discriminated” against by other monsters for being a cyclops in a field where she doesn’t belong(fashion), except she just looks like your average cute anime girl but with a cyclops eye kek.
And even the flat-chested nerdy tomboyish girl spent a significant chunk of her focus chapters wearing fake boobs and dressed like a big titty witch.

I feel like it deserves so much more popularity than what it has, considering the quality of the art and the entry level story telling. If Tsulala was japanese Devil candy's would already have an anime adaptation, i am sure. It feels impossible to be a popular western comic artist, the only indie western creators that seem to go places are indie game devs and animators like vivzie.

Not sure, but the hype is so dead kek. Kind of deserved for the quality of writing(and the character design for newer characters is terrible), but still kind of sad. I remember when the website had its own forum where I’d chat with other fans, and there were so many tumblr fanblogs, fanart, and fan ocs. But there was so much drama between fans as well as people calling Michelle fatphobic/acephobic/racist/enbyphobic/pedophilic/etcetera, as well as the website dealing with DDOS attacks. Even one of Michelle’s friends(Maya Kern, creator of Monster Pop) cut ties with her over something people were calling Michelle out for(can’t remember exactly, may be a sexualization of minors thing or a proshipper thing)
The blessing of a miniscule/nonexistent fandom is not dealing with all that.

A way to self insert or enough mystery in the plot to leave room for Fan Fiction? DVC starts as a basic monster of the week but keep reading and an overarching plot forms, one that's actually pretty compelling. the themes criticise body modifications and surgery as weaker devils attach stronger frankenstein'd parts to themselves to social climb at the cost of their freedom. the criminal gang overseeing this business are the villains. accidental gender crit, let's go.

recognisable characters. the biggest fandoms like HP have infinite self-insert potential with the setting.
fanworks at its core fill in gaps, the most well regarded art makes you want to leave it as is, fiction has to be some level of junkfood to get a fandom, because the worst parts activate our desire to 'fix.'
stories that are either overly fluffy or dark invite fandoms exploring the opposite. i.e gravity falls is a light-hearted kids show giving small hints at intrigue and danger beneath the surface so the fandom was largely AU's. something like attack on titan inspires memes to cope with the deaths, plus lots of fanfiction where everything is fine.
finally, having a story with lots of alternate paths and signposted 'what ifs' invite fans to write ff exploring what might have happened if a character did something different. or timetravel fix its.

How do you "see someone as a girl" if anyone can be girl/woman as long as they identify as one? How can someone even look like a girl physically then or be thought of as a girl if you drink the gender Koolaid? Are you supposed to assume someone is a girl then if they wear a skirt or makeup instead by sex? I thought clothes don't have gender and that would be sexist stereotyping.

I know the gender person response would be that clothes themselves don't determine gender identity and there are "gender non-conforming" troons and you ask pronouns, but you also should try to determine if a troon is "obviously" trying to be stealth and not out someone by asking pronouns or if they're trans. This ideology is so retarded.

It’s because it’s not that interesting to be frank, and tsulala has no idea how to promote. She’s a boomer who hasn’t kept up with the times so she probably doesn’t know the most effective ways of promoting her comic. Also look at her Twitter, these days it’s just 90% her posting update posts of her comic which make her page look so ugly and boring, she barely posts normal art now. I’ve kept track of her followers and she’s always losing them at a steady rate. And there’s nothing memey or “hot” about devil’s candy for zoomers, which is why it can’t really get a hold of the largest group of comic/webcomic/manga consumers.
I’ve seen newer webcomics made from younger people, even zoomers, get much more hype on social media more than devils candy ever did which leads back to tsulala operating at an outdated fashion. I consider her and devils candy to be part of the old internet somewhat, she used to post on deviantart like everyone else for example which is a good indicator, and that’s part of why she’s often out of touch.
Also she drew these dungeon meshi fanart a while ago and it got a trillion likes and followers, but at this point she’s probably back from where she started because she did nothing with that momentum and her posts about original drawing flop kek

Oh I didnt meant to say that I think shes underachieved or unsuccessful but for a 40year old to only release one underperforming personal project does seem very tone deaf and also the other stuff in her comics becomes more disgusting when you realise this is a middle aged woman drawing it and not a 20year old woman who hasn't matured (but I guess it makes sense shes still clinging on to it as a passion project)

It honestly sounds like jealousy to be honest. Tsulala is probably one of the most harmless artists one could seethe about. I find it inspiring she doesnt try to clout chase and insteads focus on her comic and what she wants to draw. She has a patreon with 1k subs she's probably making more than enough to support herself and her project.

She actually does have some more published manga and a oneshot, it’s on her wikipedia page. She always works with a writer so it’s more a case of people reaching out to hire her as an artist(picrel is more like an adaptation of a novel), but Devil’s Candy seems to be something she and her husband created together from the start, so it’s understandable she focuses more on that. I wouldn’t call it average shounenslop though kek, it’s still by and far more tolerable to read then that. Still, keep in mind the writer is a moid(even worse, a walled anime va who thinks he’s a prettyboy), not Tsulala.

I get what you mean, if you look at her Wikipedia page it lists all the other stuff she’s done. Unfortunately making a comic can take a very long time, especially if it has a uniform and detailed style like hers, if you check the comic there’s a lot of detailed backgrounds and idk if she uses 3d to help her draw them but they’re definitely hand drawn. I wouldn’t be surprised if she drew backgrounds the traditional way, which is just using perspective lines. If she did then that would take a long time

There are so many shitty pilots that become viral on shit-tok and end up being flops. Good marketting doesnt guarantee your project is going to success and become the next hazbin hotel. DC is doing fine, she has enough die hard fans to support her patreon even if she isnt actively posting rewards. We dont have a strong comic industry like in Japan, DC is not going to get picked up by an animation studio and turned into the next Naruto. Tsulala prefeers to focus on her comic instead of wasting time trying to attract an audience that doesnt have the attention span to read slow webcomics like DC.

Being a webcomics artist in general seems so daunting, can’t imagine having a decent update schedule(that doesn’t kill you) unless you live with someone rich paying your expenses, you can hire some people to help you, or you’ve reached the point where your webcomic is the one generating a decent amount of income

I only finished his first comic (Long Exposure). Story-wise, it had a pretty interesting (if cliched) premise and the plot being pretty rushed midway. But it was still a pretty good read and his story stood out from the other "indie BLs" in the webcomic scene that heavily relies on animu tropes.

Pretty jealous about the successful Kickstarer ngl, the webcomic wasn't bad but it wasn't really fantastic either. I see the success as an example of having a small but dedicated fandom. Something a lot of other indie comic creators could follow from.

I concur with your points, but the fact she isn't good handling social media as it is nowadays still stands and that's not a slight against her in any way.
