I've seen anons argue that it's also just a way to give a same-sex pairing or single male a baby, but I don't give that explanation a lot of credence because there are plenty of ways to introduce a baby into that scenario without having it be pushed out of a man's butt. If we use the setting of Star Trek as an example, and someone wants to give Kirk and Spock a baby to raise, there are a million ways to do that. They could find an orphan baby alien on a planet somewhere. A villian could try and clone Kirk for their own purposes, but the crew manage to rescue the clone when it's only a baby. One of the shit-zillion random women Kirk sleeps with could get pregnant and then he ends up with full custody of the kid because she goes to space prison or something. You have all of these options, yet people intentionally choose to put a uterus in a man and make his anus into a cloaca of some kind. That's your tell that this is a fetish: they're passing on more logical options to give the character a baby because for

Americans never had their own Comiket, basically an open-air market for up and coming comic talent, so any fandom-based BL would’ve been confined to niche areas like zines or certain corners of the internet thus limiting its exposure. On the original side, afaik in the US capeshit (and therefore scroteshit) has always been the dominant comic genre whereas Japan had multiple comic labels just for shojo/josei. The OG BLs Heart of Thomas and Kaze to Ki no Uta were published in shojo magazines, but there were never any equivalent to shojo comics in the U.S. so BL never got a chance to spread beyond a fandom within a fandom.
