Pokemon is a japanese media franchise consisting of video games, animated series and films, a trading card game, and other related media. The franchise takes place in a shared universe in which humans co-exist with creatures known as Pokemon, a large variety of species endowed with special powers.

Fairy is the only type that does not have its own gym in either Kanto or Johto. Whitney could specialize in two types at the same time as Larry (a Normal-type gym leader) does to fix that. Fairy also fits her because pink and cute.
Her Miltank is iconic, but half of her team is a Fairy Pokemon. And her gym is designed after that Fairy-type.

two teams. a normal one and a fairy one. miltank would be the ace of the normal team and clefable would be the ace of the fairy team.
if those two pokemon had to be included in both teams then miltank could be terastallized into the fairy type and clefable into normal.

Hard no from me on that! Treating normal type as if it's so boring they all get another fun type to make up for it is so lame. I wouldn't mind if she was involved but I think Whitney herself should stay a normal type leader, while maybe a sister or rival to her could get fairy type. That is called an encounter ratio. It is the likelihood for the player to encounter a specific kind of pokemon.

Yeah this, it's cute and has a giant flower (meganium) so boys didn't like as much back in the day. Saying it's misogyny is a bit much though imo, it's not that people would say "it's weak and bad because it's girly" it's just that boys on average prefer the giant alligator or angry fire-badger over the pretty flower. Same way I as a little girl didn't like machamp because it's just an ugly muscle dude in briefs, didn't mean my opinion was rooted in hating males.

No. 468860

> That does not mean that all the pokemon in that route are pidgeys.
Obviously, because your first encounter is hardlocked to Pidgey and then it changes after that. Chikorita's gender ratio never changes like the Pidgey stat does. Chikorita's gender ratio is skewed more to the male side just like Primarina and Sylveon.

>because your first encounter is hardlocked to Pidgey and then it changes after that.
Do all the other pokemon temporarily become pidgeys in the meantime? No, the game itself forces you specifically to encounter a pidgey, just like how game forces you to encounter male Eevees 87.5% of the time.

I get where you're both coming from, but I think the gender ratio implies there are sometimes more of one gender than the other. You're encountering more male Chikorita because there are more male Chikorita. Which I think is what >>468870 is saying. Pokemon with 100% gender ratio like Gallade is implying there aren't females of that species. Of course this affects the encounter rate as well. Also
>While Terapagos as a species has a 50-50 gender ratio, the only Terapagos encounter is set to always be male. Because of this, a female Terapagos cannot currently be legitimately obtained.
This implies there are equal amounts of male and female Terapagos, but you can only encounter the male one currently. This might not be true in the pokemon universe, but it is in the games imo.

>I get where you're both coming from, but I think the gender ratio implies there are sometimes more of one gender than the other.
nta but I agree and disagree. For wild pokemon, yes. For starters? No. Starters are NOT found in the wild and the professors can easily choose and limit the number of male/female pokemon presented to trainers. The fact that they're not in the wild and that they're the entire regions starters given out to all new trainers implies they're actually bred by human somewhere. Females are needed for breeding and for raising the babies, so handing out fewer of them makes sense. There's no reason to think every starter species just happens to have that gender ratio, it's more likely it's a mix of ratios but the males are favored to be given out to new trainers. Remember that gender ratio is not a stat or "fact" that appears in the dex (unless it's in the trivia text), it's just the ratio for which they appear in the game. Another thing to note is that "genderless" pokemon aren't actually genderless, they're called "gender unknown". Meaning humans just aren't really sure how to figure out what they are or how they breed. So gender ratios aren't set in stone.
Plot relevant pokemon like terapagos are obviously individual characters on their own so their gender ratio is mostly irrelevant.

No. 468956

>>468942
That's a curated area by humans, could be the same deal. And either way gender ratio doesn't have to mean "only this many male/female" exists, it could mean that one gender hides more from humans while the other is more aggressive and can more easily be found. All I'm saying is the gender ratio isn't a hard fact nor is it meant to be taken as such.

True, in Gen 1 and Gen 2 it's literally impossible to get a female shiny starter pokemon, due to the DV always being too low to be a shiny if it's a female pokemon.
>Due to Shininess being determined by DVs, certain oddities arise in other things that are also determined by DVs in Generation II:
>It is impossible to have a Shiny Pokémon with a gender ratio of seven males to one female that is female in those games, as the highest Attack DV a female Pokémon with a gender ratio of seven males to one female can have is 1, while the lowest Attack DV a Shiny Pokémon can have is 2.

It's a battle style the same way fighting is to me. "Air type" sounds better imo but that implies the power itself is elemental, which it might not be intended to be. And "bird type" is of course too related to just birds. If anything normal is the weirdest type, especially when fighting exists too. It's a direct reply to >>469504 what are you even on about? I agree with >>469510 that a pokemons type can be seen as an inherent energy or essence (why else would they have types?) so their signature attacks of course have the same type because the pokemon is using its own energy to make the attack. And a water living creature like a crab or octopus having the water type energy because they live in/near water is just obvious. Saying "crabhammer is only water type because they're based on crabs" as if that is somehow NOT super obvious and logical is confusing. Where is the disconnect? Out of all the types to be confused about water seems the most obvious and straightforward.

Also just for the record the scrote in the video in >>469457 is a massive troon shill. He made a video on womens perspective on men playing as the female player in pokemon games (because he does that himself). He didn't ask real females, and instead brought in men, including a filthy cat ear wearing troon as the "female/gender expert" who said it's fine if men are turned on by the female characters they play as because "everyone (meaning himself) thinks that too huehuehue". Electric is a lot of fun to use and I love the electric designs. Also steel, fire, flying, water. I like the idea of ice but not the reality of using ice Pokemon. I'm not a fan of fairy and the way they retroactively made a bunch of Pokemon fairy. The way fairy is strong against dragon feels like a too obvious way to fix the metagame, and the weakness to steel and poison feels random. But I'm nitpicking since dark's weakness to fighting and bug is also pretty random and it's another type that was obviously made to nerf psychic. I guess the theme is fairy types are magical creatures and they're sensitive to modern society. Maybe I just need to try out more fairy types to have them grow on me.

I used to not really care if men played as female characters in games because it's such a who cares issue, but these days I'm paranoid it's a sign of imminent troonism. Nobody would really care about it if men didn't feel the need to defend their choices to other men to prove they're so macho.

Fairy is weak against Poison and Steel because poison and iron are common weaknesses of faeries in folk tales, they're also resistant to Bug for similar reasons, folk tale faeries were said to ride forest insects as steeds.
Dark ("Evil" type in the original Japanese and other languages,it's not literal darkness) is the villainous type that is weak against the heroic Fighting and Bug types, let me remind you Japan thinks bugs are really cool and badass as seen in shows like Kamen Rider.

The problem with those 2 are that chimchar was heavily featured in both the last legends game AND the gen 4 remakes. It already had 2 recent games in which it got to shine. One of which was the direct prequel (in terms of game series, not story) legends game so there was no way they'd pick one of them.
Snivy would have been fine, but think about the fact that the final evolutions may get new forms like in the last legends game. If we assume those will be French inspired due to it being in Kalos, then that puts them in a tricky spot because serperior is already inspired by that sort of European/French royalty. Basically they can't Frenchify the already French pokemon, and if they still did it that's just a waste because you'd just have 2 of the same concept!

I fully get them not doing it, because trusting random fan artists to not sue them out of the goodness of their own hearts when they earn millions upon millions on the designs is a massive fucking risk. Sadly it kinda makes me hate fanartists for ruining real pokemons potential. And maybe they're happy the first day, but what about in a decade from now when they're a starving no-name artist and even just the publicity alone from the legal case will sky rocket them to "fame"?
My issue is that there are general things that are just universally seen as cool (like how charizard is "just a dragon" but that's cool) and game freak refuses to touch those things. If they made a pretty basic giant wolf starter that would be 100% guaranteed to be super popular. But that's too "predictable" for them so they make a bird with a giant ass instead. Yay.

Sorry but I don't agree with you that this is the reason. TPC own the biggest media franchise in the world, I really don't believe they couldn't beat literal nobodies in the court room with the amount of money they have. And ultimately what legal case would the artists of these designs even hold? You can't patent 'elemental animal' - there is such a grey area for 'inspired by' designs in media. Look at Palworld, they are being sued for infrigement of vague catching mechanics and not for any of their creature designs despite being blatent ripoffs of Pokemon.
>But that's too "predictable" for them so they make a bird with a giant ass instead. Yay.
This is the reason I'm sure, GF are just put off by 'ideas that have already been done' and are instead obsessed with 'subverting expectations'. Most fanmons follow earlier gen design logic and don't introduce entirely new concepts half way through the evo line, like the later gen starters do.

Winning doesn't even matter that much. Fans would see as them stealing a pokemon design, making millions of $ on it, and then legally ruin the victim while publicly denying stealing in the first place. And it would naturally make them all look like lazy incompetent art-thieves. It would be a huge scandal. So why waste time, money and their reputation (and thus sales) when they could just make something else instead?
>not for any of their creature designs despite being blatent ripoffs of Pokemon.
Right, but we aren't talking about "inspired by" like palworlds shitty rip-offs, we were talking about actually copying fan designs that are better than game freaks own designs. If the designs are so different there's no legal case it's just not the same conversation.

Fair, I intepreted the op's post to mean that GF avoid treading on similar ground, not that they fear literally stealing an entire design unchanged. They would never do that, obviously.

Well we will stop having it when THEY stop making shitty ugly pokemon! But they don't, so here we are! I'm possibly the biggest pokemon autist ever and even I am struggling. At this point I actually think it would be fairly easy for another monster franchise to overtake pokemon if they did the cool designs game freak refuse to give us. Like if a bunch of fan artist banded together and made a monster catching game with a similar but cooler vibe they could easily win and get more popular. Palworld could have made it if they didn't have even worse designs that were rip-offs of pokemon - but they still managed to be huge for a few months despite that. If someone made a serious attempt at a better pokemon-like game I'd give it a fair try. Maybe what game freak really needs is some real competition to learn that "random quirky shit" isn't what fans want.

More far fetched but I'm a tokusatsu fan as well and tokusatsu has these live shows where kids can come and do meet and greets with the stunt actors in costume after the shows. I personally imagine incineroar is popular with kids in the same way and I think it's cute lmao.

Delphox. I just don't understand how anyone thinks she's ugly. It is her face since some people compared her to Arnold for having long fur on her cheeks and huge flame-looking furs on her ears? Is it the fur coat dress? From what I think, is that moids seethed that their fox loli Braixen turned out to be an "ugly" witch hag and of course Delphox being less popular compared to Braixen for being less fappable. Pathetic. She's super cool to me especially as a fox witch which I both love and her shiny is absolutely beautiful.

I unironically really liked most of the gen 9 characters. I do agree that the game's 3D style looks abhorrent, but the designs are solid and I think a lot of them have way more personality than older characters. It's probably influenced a lot by external things because I think I've had the best time talking about characters with my friends this gen, fan art is all gorgeous too. Rika is probably one of my favorite characters of all time too, so many things about her just strike right.
But yeah, awful 3D style lead to nearly all NPCs looking irredeemably ugly and stiff. I wish the game preserved same visual style as SwSh, but better animated. If gen 10 moves further in this pseudo-Pixar direction, it's over.

>I swear so many designs from gen 6 onward have suffered because their 3D models

I feel the opposite actually! With exceptions (a handful of gen 6 ones ironically since they were still figuring stuff out) the ones affected the most by the 2D->3D transition were gen 1-5 pokemon as those were designed with bidimensional art on mind. Gen 7-9 ones looks better because they were made for 3D from the start and take adventage of it with some idie animations and attacks, there are some pokemon I wasn't fond of until I saw them in-game.

I still hold a grudge over what they did to Meowth… It's such a cute and charming pokemon and they sucked all the life of it. I get having too much movement in 3D spaces can look bad so they can't be like BW sprites for example, but I wish they had given it a cute pose like all its previous sprites at the very least.

I miss sprites so much. I really wonder if they'll ever manage to get good enough at 3D to match how good the sprites looked. It's the same with humans, they fuck up proportions and poses.
To be fair the BDSP models are presumably done by ILCA, but because they did the same poses it's easy to compare them. See how in 3D his torso is too long, his arms are too thin and noodley and he is so stiff he can't even rest his arm on his leg like in the original pose! Even just the shape of the cap is wrong and his hair is too long for some reason. It's like they don't understand the appeal or weight of the fisherman sitting there sunken in for hours while fishing, putting his weight on his other leg while raising his rod. He's giving "alright then kid, let's have a battle!" while the new one looks like a team rocket members poor attempt at blending in, he's never fished a day in his life but wants to steal your pokemon as you can tell from his deranged face. They literally JUST had to match the sprite and they couldn't even do that!

it's pretty amazing how much greninja shits all over inteleon. they have a lot of similarities, starting from a meek little pokemon and turning into an agile and sneaky pokemon. i don't love greninja's design because it's a little 2edgy, but it does everything better than inteleon. it's meant to be a ninja, which is something you could apply to a real-life animal, like any kind of stealthy carnivore. inteleon is based off a spy. there are no animals in nature that act like a human spy. greninja's design tells you how it moves and its "clothing" is just its tongue wrapped around its neck like a nija scarf which is honestly clever. inteleon has markings that resemble a suit, gloves and boots and it stands upright and strangely. greninja throws water shuriken using its water generating powers and inteleon uses a finger gun. that's retarded. it's fursona tier. and finally, inteleon has that faggy smug grin on its face while greninja just looks like it's going to fuck you up.

Same, I thought maybe I had gotten used to it by now but seeing it again now it really is straight up ugly. Human hands? Spider-leg-thin arms and weak legs? Turtle neck tank top shirt pattern, random ass cape??? Good god water type lovers are really being kicked and spat on, it's bullying at this point. I've literally never seen a fan design starter that is as bad as inteleon or quaquaval. Like picrel isn't perfect but it's at least 10 times better than the 2 we actually got. I just don't get it. When I talk to fellow fans most of us seem to dislike these new starters? How are they not getting the message? Does Japan love them or something?

At the time of gen 8 I thought maybe it was James Turners influence since he was the art director and I dislike a lot of his designs, but gen 9 had shit starters too and he left the company before those came out. Though now I see he is confirmed to have designed several gen 9 pokemon (paldean tauros, tatsugiri, dondozo, gholdengo) so he could easily have worked on the gen 9 starters too before leaving. He's also the guy who talked game freak out of making Galar a beautiful medieval inspired region to instead do modern soccer/sports so I really hate his taste and his negative influence on pokemon. I really hope his influence is gone in gen 10, though I'm sure it wasn't all his doing.

Especially not after we got the whole Blue Berry Academy DLC.
Also, it received the most regional variants after Gen 1, 4 paradox Pokemon were Gen 5 Pokemon (+Kingambit), and Enamorus in PLA.
Gen 5 also had the most returning characters with Colress, Grimsley, and Professor Burnet in SM (and Ghetsis if you count him), and Ingo in PLA.

Depends on the pokemon. I imagine humanoid pokemon are intelligent but can't replicate human language. This sounds childish but I guess I just like the idea of a knightly pokemon being instinctually protective and acting semi-romantic towards a human woman I guess. Things like holding hands and looking out for her when she's walking home late. Maybe he gets a bit jealous and grumpy when she has a male friend over and tries to push him away. And Gallade is a psychic type so he would be in-tune with her emotions and try to cheer her up when she's down. I don't understand people who want to fuck pokemon though, that shit's weird. And I despise moids who waifu pokemon because they're degens about it. I love the Ralts line but hate how Gardevoir is sexualized in so many fan spaces.

Pokémon are definitely sentient but not sapient. Some are smarter than humans (Alakazam comes to mind) but they also don't build homes or form societies or anything. In an alternate universe salazzle is the cursed fire type starter. Honestly though I like salazzle a lot, it's "sexy" in theory but doesn't have a human shaped body or face and it's whole concept is based around pheromones and making male salandit serve them. However if it was actually a fire type starter design I'd hate it and think it was trash. There are just different criteria for different roles in the pokemon world. Same way we couldn't have dialga be the first route wild encounter, nor could caterpie make for a satisfying legendary end boss design. Starters just shouldn't be humanoid coom bait or based around pheromone seduction.

It's 100% doable, Pokemon games are easy. Also HGSS has a terrible level scaling, with wild pokemon being at Lv. 25 at most outside the post-game mountain, so I think carrying few critters is recomended if you want to avoid grinding as much as posible.

Visible makeup:
Nessa - is a literal fashion model
Honey - young gold digger wife (sorry not sorry)
Opal - stage diva
Klara - bitchy pop singer/social media influencer
Peonia - rebelling teen daughter
Oleana - sexy secretary trope

I would like to get into the pokemon franchise even if it's just a single game or two, but I have absolutely no clue where to start and I feel so overwhelmed with the sheer amount of media out there. What game would be good for beginners? Is there anywhere I should start to learn about the lore? I would prefer if it were just the games, I don't think the anime or the card collecting would be for me. Is there any content creators who make pokemon content/gameplays I should check out? The problem with Pokemon games, imo, is how varying in quality they are. The older games are very limited to the technological capabilities of their time, and it shows. If you start with a newer game, like Sword/Shield or Scarlet/Violet, ancient games like Red/Blue or Gold/Silver become a lot less fun by comparison. That's not to say the older games are bad, but they are not very accessible for new players. They're also spread out across a lot of consoles, nearly all of which are considered obsolete, up to and including the 3DS. All that being said: for a modern player, I'd recommend starting with X/Y^ (3DS), the first of the 3d-style games, and going from there. If you only have access to a Switch, Sword/Shield (my personal favorite, kek) is a good start too. Legends: Arceus is also super fun, but it's not a "main" game and it revolves more around catching Pokemon than battling.

^ A new game based on this region (Legends: Z-A) is coming out soon, so now is a great time to play it!

No. 475395

>>475378
If you want to play the main games in order of release you can emulate them, so you just have to pick a version between Red, Blue or Yellow. I'd recommend starting with Gold,Silver or Crystal if you don't know if you want to play all the main games because it's the second game so from there it gets better, it has a lot of QOL features added compared to RBY, and these features are kept in the next games for the most part. I'm talking about things like knowing what a move does before choosong whether you want your pokemon to learn it or not, which wasn't in the first gen and which led me as a kid to have pokemon that couldn't attack at all in very first runs of Pokemon Blue when it was just released. It also has all the types except for fairy. Pokemon Black and White were supposed to be a soft reboot so you could also start with one of these versions if GSC isn't recent enough for you. The games are easy and not too long compared to other turn based rpgs so you could even play several versions if you like one of the games a lot and will emulate them instead of trying to pay hundreds of dollars in second hand copies. Pokemon SM is slightly different compared to other main games because the gym leaders are replaced by other types of battles, and Pokemon SV is very different in that the game is an open world as soon as it starts so you can potentially beat gym leaders in any order even if that's not recommended. The other games are a lot more similar, the story is just an excuse for you to explore a region, beat gym leaders/bosses, beat a criminal organization, beat the elite 4 and the champion, and in some of the games you have more things to do after you beat the champion. Some are more linear than others and you can't complete the pokedex unless you trade with someone or hack a game so if that interests you I suggest you start with Switch games so you can play online and trade with others.

As for spinoffs, Pokemon Legends Arceus is the closest game compared to the main game, I really liked the Pokemon TCG on the gameboy as a kid. I loved Pokemon Colosseum on the gamecube which only has double battles but I found it way harder than main games back then. There are a lot of spinoffs and which one you'll like depends on genres so check them out later.

Sorry if you already knew some of this, I don't know how familiar you are with Pokémon. I'm also assuming that you'll be emulating. EVERY main Pokémon game can be easily emulated, including the Switch games if you have a gaming PC.

My personal recommendation, especially if you are into retro games from the GBA era, is to play any Gen 3 game: FireRed/LeafGreen and Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald. I'd pick FireRed/LeafGreen first, since they're remakes of the very first Pokémon games, Red/Green. Although, Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald were made with the intention of being separate from the previous two generations (Gen 2 games were a sequel of sorts to Gen 1 games), while at the same time many pokémon from those generations can be caught, so you'd be fine picking the Hoenn games instead. Also, the Gen 3 games are huge classics, like the two previous generations.

After that, either play the other set of Gen 3 games, or pick another generation that interests you. Keep in mind that there have been some changes to various mechanics after Gen 3, like in Gen 4 where a major change was made to Pokémon attack moves (the so-called Physical/Special split) and usually, several moves' effects change from generation to generation. But the basic battle system is still the same.

Alternatively, you could start with X/Y, which are Gen 6 games for the 3DS. They were the first games in full 3D (with chibi overworld models), are relatively modern compared to Gen 3 (so you'll play with the benefits of more up-to-date QOL improvements and battle mechanics), and introduced the Fairy type (which so far is the latest type to be added), so it's a pretty good point in the franchise to start.
In the same generation, there are Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire, remakes of Ruby/Sapphire, but I wouldn't say they're that much better than the originals. My personal and very biased recommendation is to play the originals first, but feel free to ignore this opinion.

The first two generations are very, very different from Gen 3 and onwards, in terms of the system and graphics. You can try them out later if you want, but I don't recommend starting there, unless you love really old retro games. If lore is extremely important to you, I'd suggest playing Gen 1 first (international version of Red/Blue) and then Gen 2 when/if you eventually decide to give them a try. But if you don't mind missing some plot context, you'd be fine just playing Gen 2 (Crystal is the best by far and it was the first game in the main series to have a playable female protagonist).

I do not recommend starting with Gen 4 (Diamond/Pearl/Platinum and HeartGold/SoulSilver) because I didn't like them that much, and for some reason they made the battles slow as fuck. I found HGSS to be kinda difficult compared to other games, because you have to grind a shitton, and there aren't many good options to grind for EXP in HGSS (they're still hailed as some of, if not the best games to date). Besides, lore-wise, HGSS are a remake of Gold/Silver/Crystal, which were sequels to RGB. That means HGSS is a sequel to FRLG, which is all the more reason to start with FRLG.

I also don't recommend Gen 5 (Black/White and their sequels Black 2/White 2) because BW have a completely new Pokédex, meaning pokémon from previous generations can't be obtained in these games (unless you trade or transfer, of course). Many people didn't like that there were only Unova pokémon, although I didn't mind at all, but I had already played previous games. You could start with BW if you don't mind the lack of old pokémon. Meanwhile, B2W2 should only be played after BW. Gen 5 was quite heavy on story and lore.

There's also Gen 7, but I don't have much to say about it other than I just don't feel like it's a good entry point. Gen 7 is Sun/Moon, Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon (3DS) and Let's Go, Pikachu/Eevee (Switch).

You may have a Switch and be considering getting a Pokémon game for that console, but personally, I wouldn't recommend the Switch games. For long-time fans, Generations 8 and 9 (both on the Switch) are where the franchise has really started to go to shit. But still, it seems many people got into Pokémon that way, and the games are still enjoyable, esp. if you're new. Just expect subpar graphics for a Switch game, and some bugs.
All the mainline games on the Switch are:
>Let's Go, Pikachu/Eevee
Gen 7 games. Remakes of the Gen 1 game Pokémon Yellow, which itself was a special version of Red/Green/Blue.
>Sword/Shield
The first Gen 8 games. Has DLC. Removed a lot of Pokémon and moves from previous generations and rendered them unobtainable and unusable (respectively), which caused a huge controversy as nothing like this had happened before in the series (before, it was possible to obtain any pokémon by transferring them from game to game and generation to generation).
>Brilliant Diamond/Shining Pearl
Remakes of the Gen 4 games Diamond/Pearl. Not developed by Game Freak. Regarded as the shittiest remakes in the series.
>Legends: Arceus
Officially considered a mainline game, but features different gameplay from the usual. Actually pretty good, but heavy on lore, so you'll want to play previous games first, especially Diamond/Pearl/Platinum since this game takes place in a past version of the same region as those games (Sinnoh in the present and Hisui in the past).
>Scarlet/Violet
The first Gen 9 games. Has DLC. Worst new pokémon and character designs to date.
>Legends: Z-A
Upcoming game. Similar to Legends: Arceus, it's different from the other mainline games. Takes place in the Kalos region, which is where X/Y took place. If you care a lot about lore you'll want to play those ones first (another reason to start with X/Y).

>tl;dr
IMO start with FireRed/LeafGreen or Ruby/Sapphire; alternatively, X/Y if you can't stand GBA-era games and/or you wanna be ready for the release of Legends: Z-A and subsequent hype. Then, pick any game you want, and preferably play a Kanto game before playing any Johto game.

>Is there anywhere I should start to learn about the lore?

Honestly, Pokémon lore is best learned by just playing the games. When I started playing Pokémon, I also liked reading Pokémon wiki articles on lore kek
The many official Pokémon manga and the TV anime are based on the games, but they're not exact adaptations. So the primary source of lore is the games. Lately, there have also been other animated adaptations like Pokémon Origins and Pokémon: Twilight Wings that are completely separate from the TV anime and more directly based on the games.

Imo start with the current platform era, so the switch games. I love and adore the older games, but I think immediately becoming up to date with the current gameplay, fandom community and goings on in the pokemon franchise is the most valuable. I'd start with sword & shield (those THE gen 8 games) and if you had fun then play scarlet & violet (gen 9). If you've then enjoyed 2 games and still itch for more than you can re-examine how you feel after that and what you want to play next, which could be an older game or current "side games" like legends arceus or let's go pikachu.

Are you a seasoned gamer used to playing older games? Start with the original Red/Blue then go to Crystal, then whatever you want after that. If you're new to gaming start with Black/White, then Black 2/White 2, then the older games if you liked those. Black and White won't overwhelm you with Pokemon from the get go and have some of the best story, music, and aesthetics in the franchise. Black 2 and White 2 are the sequels and continue off of the first games' stories while mixing up the map and Pokemon enough to where the region feels interesting still.
Personally my favorites are Gen 2, Gen 3, and Gen 5. Gen 6 is only really worth it if you really like outfit customization and shiny hunting. I do not like Gen 7. Gen 8 is horrible, Gen 9 is marginally better than 8.
Also, if you see an unusually colored Pokemon that sparkles before battle while you're playing, drop everything and catch it.
DO NOT START WITH THE SWITCH GAMES. Apart from Legends Arceus they're some of the worst games in the franchise. I hesitate to say worst because Sun/Moon exist but they're very very bad.

Yeah, the good thing about game freak is they tend to be behind on things, so I'm hoping the troon scandal keeps growing so fast that game freak never fully had time to catch up to pandering and they silently remove it from their future plans before even getting to release any of it.

>I always assumed that Marnie wore eyeliner
Sure but there's nothing in her design that actually confirms it, she has pretty standard eyes and eyelashes for anime, similar to Bea who is just a fighter, while Nessa who has blue eye shadow also has a noticeable winged eyeliner on top of that. Since they're all female japanese-created characters, in reality there's about a 99% they're all meant to be wearing makeup.

I love how "Z-A" just means you go from rank Z to A lmao
I think this is a very basic pokemon concept, similar to the tournament Ash was in in the anime. You battle trainers to win the tournament and go up in rank to become champion. It's a much smaller story than a main series game but a fun one that I think I'll enjoy a lot. This could easily have been framed as a boring pokken fighting game, so it being a "real" pokemon game has me excited.

>Yeah, the good thing about game freak is they tend to be behind on things, so I'm hoping the troon scandal keeps growing so fast that game freak never fully had time to catch up to pandering and they silently remove it from their future plans before even getting to release any of it.
Yeah same. I mean it's already annoying enough that the gender-tard fans of Pokemon already headcanon certain characters to be "trans" or 'nonbinary" like what we have seen with characters like Bugsy, Grusha, & Penny. I've even seen some say that Tulip and Nessa (KEK at how bad this one especially is) are "transwomen". So for the love of Arceus I hope that you're right that Game Freak continues to stay behind the trends and just doesn't give in.
>Really? I've never heard this, anyone who likes it have always called it gothic lolita and anyone else just goes "ugly, not for me" and that's it. I've seen people call zoroark (both forms) goth though
Maybe it's where I hang online then because I've definitely heard it a few times, I even explained to a comment how it's not "goth coded" and that gothic lolita is not the same as goth.
>It's quite literally "Miss Magician" though with magius being a commonly known latin word meaning magician, that's way more on the nose than gothorita which is also a play on senorita!
Sure but with "Magius" you don't really hear that term used all that much compared to "magician" so it makes it sound much more ominous, at least to my ears haha With "goth", I feel it's on the nose because most people when they hear "goth" will think of the "aesthetic", they already have that preconceived notion of what the word is compared to "MisMagius" (where not many people would think of "magician" right off the bat if that makes sense lol). Like if I were to rename Gothorita, I'd call it something like "Kurolita" or something like that lol.

I gave an example of a female character from the very same game, you've added a bunch of random ones cross multiple generations. If anything they just draw eyes in whatever way they want, Milo has weird eyes without whites, Piers has cartoony sanpaku eyes. The characters are designed by multiple different artists, just because one artist favors a certain style of eyes doesn't mean anything. Marnie having visible eyelashes isn't proof she 100% definitely wears eyeliner, it's weird to argue it the same way we don't know if she's wearing socks or not. You can headcanon or draw whatever fanart you want either way.

Ayrt and 100% agreed. I'm not subbed to him and the video just popped up in my recommended so I decided to give it a watch and I had to pause at the TIF character and give a deep mental groan. And yeah, to act like this fucking mutilation of the mentally ill is "progressive" and "good" is so fucking infuriating and it should be obvious why this kind of stuff does no one any good. I know it's because these fuckwits don't actually listen and critically think about what de-transitioners say nor do they read the info on just what these mutilations disguised as surgeries actually do to the body but the info is out there and there's no excuse to not look at it.
And also, Pokemon is mainly targeted at children so could you imagine if GameFreak did try to pander to it by including troons in their games that would further influence gullible children who end up playing that game, especially autistic children? I don't even want to fathom that disaster of a situation.

It's not just the gym leaders, it's the trainers as well. There's more double battles and more trainers added to routes. For a seasoned player it does make for a better experience but a new player would probably prefer an easier time to learn all the type matchups and such. I had a friend ages ago (who was an experienced Pokemon player, mind you) get hardstuck on Wattson because she picked Treeko and she ran out of trainers to grind on to level her Pokemon up and had no access to any Pokemon that had super effective moves or X items. She would have had to grind a bunch more on wilds to stand a chance apparently and she got frustrated. So for a new player I feel like Ruby or Sapphire would be a better time.

Most likely about 12 years later, nothing is saying it's anything but present time and XY released in 2013. Though I could see it being way less than that with an older teen Clemont appearing. We know in the future/parallel future the robot pokemon from violet exist so it's not going to be set in the distant future. This just isn't the future legends game, it's just a normal game like all games except arceus have been. Time travel isn't what the legends games are about at all.

And like she said, picking something like Treecko and not having any super effective moves on your team can get you stuck on Wattson (happened to me the first time, although I did manage to beat him with moves that weren't very effective after many tries). So one little fuckup in the wrong place could make it unnecessarily hard for a new player compared to other newbies. But I guess it also depends on how easily frustrated the player is.

>it's literally just playing the game
The older games managed this without forcing you into constant NPC dialogue. You learned the game's mechanics and world by guess what? Playing the game and figuring it out yourself. If you wanted to learn about the world you had the choice to talk to NPCs or ignore them.
>lillie
I hate this character. I wanted to love her, her initial design was cute, but she is useless and insufferable and responsible for too many of the times the game came to a screeching halt.
>Oh no, world building! How scary an boring!
Again, the older games managed to convey the lore and the world without stopping you every five minutes and word vomiting all over you. World building should be conveyed through the world's design and through things you find organically.
>Lusamine is complex
How? She's an evil mom that gets forgiven for all her actions in the end because oh no le evil alien Pokemon poisoned her because like with most Japanese media, moms aren't allowed to be shown as evil abusers without some bullshit excuse. Compare her to Ghetsis' portrayal and how the characters treat him and the difference is night and day.
>you get to ride pokemon instead
Hawaii has bikes absolutely everywhere. It's a massive lore fail to exclude them in a Hawaii region. Plus like other nonnas said the Pokemon aren't even yours.
>great feature for shiny hunting
The previous games had much better shiny hunting methods. SOS battles were annoying as hell. You get an encounter, can't run, then the little shit has the audacity to call for help over and over when you're just trying to leave the damn battle.
>1% encounters aren't hard to find
Anon there's a Pokemon that will only appear if another Pokemon calls them for help. RNG upon RNG.
>you hate new things in games and you hate old pokemon
You are being deliberately obtuse. When I'm in a new region, I want to see that region's Pokemon. I want to use that region's Pokemon. I don't want old Pokemon overrunning them. This could have been forgiven if they'd leaned into real life Hawaiian concerns about invasive species killing the island's local species but it's not, it's instead genwun pandering.

I do think this would have made the game more tolerable. But Black/White has a lot of cutscenes but it didn't feel like a slog to get through them. For me the quality of the writing from BW to SuMo had gone off a cliff.

Animals in the real world don't go "oh shit horses like me live in the US so I can't cross the border to canada, we must stay in the US only" so why should pokemon? The WORST games to me were BW because they didn't have any old pokemon in it, BW2 were a billion times more fun because I could catch and use old pokemon again mixed with the new ones. SM was the last game to have the natdex available, peak pokemon ended right there because of it.

nta but personally I find replaying BW a pain in the ass because of the cutscenes. I don't care about its story at all, I find it as intrusive as SM's story except I liked Alola and it's NPCs a lot more than the ones in Unova once the mandatory tutorial was over. I did like N, Bianca and the subway masters a lot though, and I like Looker so I was hapoy to see him again in the first postgame scene but that's not enough for me, so if I want to replay gen 5 games I almost only replay BW2.

The reason why I said Goldenrod and not Castelia is because Unova has A LOT of beautiful and interesting areas to explore, unlike plain boring Johto. We wouldn't miss much if a Johto game only took place in one city.

What do you mean by tutorials, can you define them? The only parts I've ever seen as a tutorial is the 1-5 min part where someone goes "this is how you catch a wild pokemon" and they show a cutscene of someone catching it and hand you a couple of poke balls afterwards. I have literally no idea what anons are talking about other than that. I have played so many other games that actually have tutorials where menus pop up every few seconds to explain controls, there are no enemies or a dummy target to try out new powers, or the actions in that first area have no affect on the rest of the game etc… I've seen none of that in main pokemon games?

No. 476345

>>476250
I really think Lumiose City is the perfect city for ZA, but I also want a proper XY remake really badly. The only other city that would make sense is Castelia City imo. We gotta remember that the next in line to get remakes are gen 5 anyway, and ZA might just spark more interest in gen 6 again making future remakes possibly more likely to happen then. They made PLA and BDSP at the same time so one doesn't exclude the other.
>>476265
>retarded thing that nobody likes such as dynamax
I like dynamax/gmax far more than I like megas. Megas are just another evolution, except less cool than a real evolution because it's temporary and you never get to see it outside of battle. Gmax gave you the same but was showier and cooler, and as a bonus you could dynamax all your other pokemon too so you weren't limited to just a few select ones to use this fun new feature. No gym battle will ever be as cool as those in SWSH, they felt so intense with that crowd cheering all around you. Going to a gym in SV after that felt so boring.

There's a lot of English-language voice actors in the game. Some of them even play different characters, like Roark's VA (Alejandro Saab) who also does Kukui and The Masked Royal's voice; I think he's perfect as Roark but his Kukui voice is a bit too forced.
I'm honestly surprised they keep finding new VAs, but it looks like they also hire VAs with little experience that nobody has heard of. There are still a bunch of unidentified English VAs in the game. Not a bad thing per se, I'm in favor of the non-Japanese VA industry growing so we don't have to hear the same 10 voices all the time, but sometimes it can lead to disappointing quality. For example, Riley's voice is too goofy.

AYRT, this is my first time hearing both of these! I love the JP, the EN is… It's very nostalgic of 2000s anime dubs but I can't say I'm a fan lol.

You can thank Kazuhiko Inoue for that. He has killer ikebo, a even at his age (71 his birthday was 3 days ago kek). It couldn't have been more perfect for Kabu.

Please understand they're a small indie company with the budget of millions of dollars. Do you know how time consuming it is to make balconies, anyway?

They're not balconies, they're regular windows and all you can put on these things are very small things like flowers if you have these windows instead of a proper balcony.

Replaying Black has been so wonderful, it's been a long time since I've revisited one of the 2D games, I think not since before SwSh. The changing of the seasons and various weather patterns are all so beautiful when rendered in pixel graphics. I miss it.
Which Pokemon games do you nonna love the most, visually?

Black and White definitely has the most appealing overworld design of the main games. I also really like the Distortion World in Platinum. However, my absolute favorite games visually are the DS Mystery Dungeon games. The towns and buildings feel so cozy, and there are some genuinely impressive cutscenes in the game.

I like Crystal the most, I love how the pokemon sprites move when battles start, I love the color palette especially at night, I love how human characters look less weird/abstract than in RBY and Kris looks really cute, I was happy I didn't have to pretend Red and the MC for Gold and Silver are tomboys with short hair anymore when naming them after me. I would have found BW and BW2 equally good looking if it weren't for the way the pokemon sprites look and move during battles, I always found it very ugly. I would rather have them not move and not look blurry just like in the previous games.

That sounds good. I need to replay BW someday even if it's one of my least favorite main games in the series. The first time I played it I didn't bother explore the postgame cities and routes after beating Ghetsis and in my second run I checked every nook and cranny in the game but it wasn't possible to play online anymore unfortunately. I should even replay all the games I have in order of release.

And wow, I guess everybody is so different? I was just thinking earlier today that I enjoy how they move in this one. I was lamenting that we only got the feature for one gen before we transitioned to 3D, but sounds like my loss was your win lol.

NTA but I remember absolutely hating how they moved back when the game came out. While I still prefer the static sprites, I can't deny that the BW animations have a ton of personality compared to how the 3D models move.
