Nick has built up an online cult that constantly tells him he’s the millennial Norm Macdonald, which only feeds the ego. The truth Nick and his fans can’t face is that while he was hilarious for a good stretch of Cum Town’s run, the last couple years of the show were creatively barren. Nick coasted. The YouTube compilations are doing a lot of heavy lifting. The last few years of the show were creatively empty. Even Nick admitted multiple times that he was just phoning it in.
Let’s be honest. The mainstream didn’t reject Nick because he was too edgy or too real. They ignored him because his standup isn’t that strong, and most of his material only works within the context of the podcast. Saying he’s too good for Netflix or Hollywood is the same narrative Sam Hyde fans use (for the record I think Nick is a million times funnier than Sam). In both cases, we’re talking about niche talents who built cult followings online but couldn’t evolve or break through for a reason.
You also have to consider what happened with Stav. After he left Cum Town, he distanced himself from Nick completely. The show died not long after, and Nick lost one of the easiest gigs imaginable, sitting around riffing with friends for a few hours a week and making hundreds of thousands of dollars a year. The Adam Friedland Show failed to capture the same spark, and now Nick has to watch Stav, who I mentioned earlier is significantly less talented, carve out a real mainstream career with comedy specials, touring, and industry respect. That kind of success is exactly what Nick thinks he deserves, and watching someone he used to view as a sidekick achieve it before him has to sting.
Nick deserves credit for creating something influential and for having a distinct voice at the right time. But the idea that he’s some brilliant, undiscovered talent being held back by gatekeepers just doesn’t add up. He had chances. He didn’t do much with them. He’s not being punished for being edgy. He just got outpaced by people who were sharper, more professional, and more adaptable.
